The Psyche Behind The Character
Bendydoodle Cantaloupe replied to JessieBlackwood's topic in Characters
I can't reconcile that person with the man who was in tears immediately after pulling the trigger, though. Still thinking. And I think I can reconcile it. To me, Sherlock decided that his friends -- John, Mary, Janine, Mycroft -- were worth losing his own life over, whatever that "loss" would ultimately mean. He analyzed the situation, let rage carry him through it, and was devastated by what the situation had come to, but it was his only solution. And continuing to regret it as far as the tarmac scene would be a waste of his energy. For me, sometimes being a "hero" (even if he doesn't think of himself as such) means sacrificing yourself for others. As we've suggested upthread, leaving CAM alive to continue to use the Appledore vaults is not an option even worth considering. “Name one hero who was happy." I considered. Heracles went mad and killed his family; Theseus lost his bride and father; Jason's children and new wife were murdered by his old; Bellerophon killed the Chimera but was crippled by the fall from Pegasus' back. "You can't." -Madeline Miller -

The irony is, is that just yesterday a substitute teacher was busted for looking at some real nasty stuff on his iPad in class! -
Hey, same here!

Aren't those words synonyms, though? -
While the boys are doing their aggressive preliminary dominance gestures like circling each other and glaring, she just walks off, nicking a few souvenirs like Lestrade's NSY badge. :D

So wait a minute. If, say, your best friend has been dumped and is crying her eyes out in the hallway, you can't even give her a hug to comfort her? You can't do each other's hair? Can't give someone with a bad case of neck pain a shoulder massage? How does your principal think friendships work? 1) no, 2) more no, 3) definitely no, because "friendship" is now a codeword for "friends with benefits". At least, that's how it feels. Then again, the assistant principal is an ultra-conservative male of very ill repute, so nobody really takes him seriously unless he's sitting across from them in his office. -
That would be interesting...maybe. Would he consider her a goldfish or would he actually appreciate her? He won't have any time to consider that, because Lestrade'll come busting into his house and snapping his big pointy nose in half! Are we sure it'd be Lestrade? I'm thinking maybe Sherlock will realize how much he cares for Molly and shoo Mycroft off. (Now Rory's initial problem with girls & his older brother in FortySomething is popping into my head). Ah, yes, a three-way wrestling match between a Consulting Detective, a Detective Inspector, and the British government.

Apparently "PDA" is filed under the category "Physical Contact", alongside "Physical Violence" and "Harassment". Which is stupid, because when a kid pushes another kid over all's well, but when one guy hugs his girlfriend it's considered inappropriate, even if it's genuinely platonic. As if all teenagers are angry sexual creatures who do nothing but look for the next person to make out with. -

Shoot the Wall (A.K.A. The Rant Thread)
Bendydoodle Cantaloupe replied to Banshee's topic in Miscellaneous Musings
When I was a student, I joined a volunteer group that visited schools and helped with sex ed classes. I had to do some training for that, of course, which was extremely interesting, and the work was too. One of the things I realized was that the so-called "generation porn" has exactly the same insecurities regarding sex as we did when I was a teen, and the questions asked were often refreshingly naive. What made me sad was how almost all the girls I met knew a lot about childbirth, but had absolutely no clue about how to make sex enjoyable for themselves. The general attitude seemed to be that sex was something you endured to please the boy and make him love you, then later to get pregnant. Oh my god. What happened to the sexual revolution? The boys on the other hand were mostly concerned with not making a fool of themselves and pleasing the girl - and with the difficulties of female anatomy. Worse thing is, dating and relationships are now getting slammed at my school. If I can, I'll somehow get pics of what's happening, but the basic thing is is that all PDA is banned, even if it's just a little hug. The assistant principal at my school showed us a very tacky passive-aggressive four-slide PowerPoint at lunch. They seemed pretty legit until the third or fourth slide popped up -- a closeup of two hands clasped together, and then a picture of a kid screaming captioned, "GET A ROOM ALREADY!" I could go on, but then I'd get myself all fired up to start a riot tomorrow. I dunno, I just might. <_< -

Bendy, was that all not covered in school in 6th grade or so? Has it changed that much since my day? Of course, I was in a school run by the DOD at that age, and we all know what a bastion of liberalism THEY are! ;) I'll have to ask some of my teacher friends how they do it here in Virginia (another bastion of liberalism... NOT!) The more I hear about school systems these days, the more I'm glad I'm not in one...... We don't even know what the heck a birth control pill(?) looks like. Hell, we don't even know what birth control comes in! -

I actually think this is legit. I mean, look at how horrible sex ed is. One of my friends was complaining about her period because she loves swimming, and some guy who was eavesdropping on us blurted, "Can't you just hold it?" And just recently my science teacher realised how much we don't know about our bodies when my class went into a unit on human anatomy and she asked us if we knew how puberty is changing us, and over half of the class just stared blankly. -

Just dig up a long coat somewhere, and then stitch red thread into the buttonholes. That's what I did.

Series 4 (and Special) Speculation

Baskerville goin' back at it, then. ;) -
The strange thing about the IOU motif is that the last time it's mentioned in TRF is when John's at Sherlock's grave and says, "I was so alone, and I owe you so much." And in John's account of TGG on his blog, he writes: So is the last repeat of the IOU motif a nod to this statement in John's blog? Or is it something more?

Nah, he'd ask to be put down before getting that helpless.
