I want to get the complete stories with the original illustrations, in books that are easy to carry and read standing up and the font clear enough even when the lighting isn't bright enough. Looked around Amazon and the comments confused me a bit.

Young Sherlock Holmes or The Boy Sherlock Holmes?
BBally replied to BBally's topic in General Sherlock Holmes Discussion
Any particular factor that makes you lean more towards the Andy Lane books? -
There have been many stories about the great detective solving cases outside of Doyle's canon, however there also stories about Holmes before he became the world's first consulting detective. Of course many of us remember the enjoyable Young Sherlock Holmes movie but there are also 2 book series centering on the younger part of his life, Young Sherlock Holmes and The Boy Sherlock Holmes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young_Sherlock_Holmes_(books) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boy_Sherlock_Holmes Young Sherlock Holmes is a book series written by veteran writer Andy Lane (Doctor Who's Virgin's New Adventures books and the Big Finish audio stories). This series is still ongoing with seven installments released so far and has the advantage of being authorized by the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The Boy Sherlock Holmes is a book series written by Canadian author Shawn Peacock, this series is notable for giving Holmes a Jewish background (on his father's side) and while this series doesn't have the official seal of approval from Doyle's estate, I've read reviews who favored this book series over YSH series (some reviews say this series captured the Victorian era better), this series has official ended with 6 books from 2007 to 2012. Which is better in your opinion?

While I don't agree with everything he did (his politics, The Red Star, Tragedy of Korosko), I'm glad his greatest creation has lasted the test of time and that he actually fought against injustice in real life.

I haven't seen much of the Rathbone films but I've listened to a lot of the New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes radio show, which were made after the film series ended, Rathbone left due to fear of being typecast and had to be replaced by 2 actors but Bruce would continue on until leaving the show himself (and got top billing when Basil left). While the radio series still followed the formula of Bruce's Watson, the radio version showed him as much more competent than the film series did by concentrating on his actual medical background.

I've seen Young Sherlock Holmes, I think Nickolas Rowe could've been a great adult Sherlock Holmes.

I've always been interested in a Sherlock Holmes vs Jack The Ripper type stories.

I believe the film was made in 1916, but yes I true lost treasure finally found. Now if only the old radio recordings featuring Gilette could be found.

Thanks, I know that getting episodes from the internet is scorned upon among some people due to the whole piracy issue. Again due to my circumstances, that's the best option currently if I want to watch Sherlock but I do plan to buy the Crime and Punishment game and the Doyle collection when I get to the UK.

Thanks to the internet I have (currently on Series 2), I've noticed videos of Sherlock with Arabic fansubs. Ordering DVD's on Amazon from Egypt would cost me a lot of money, I could afford it but at this moment I need it for my shopping and rent. Maybe when I visit my brother in the UK I might get the DVDs although I have my eyes set on the Doyle book series.

This is Badr Bally from Egypt, I was born in Brighton, UK in 1981 and moved with my parents to Egypt in 1988. I've been a big Sherlock Holmes fan since I was a kid, my first real exposure being the Arabic dub of Sherlock Hound then I moved on to the movies and TV shows. BBC's Sherlock isn't available on Arabic networks at this time unfortunately despite the character's relevance here (despite the show making news on many Arabic entertainment news) but the Guy Ritchie films have been shown and Elementary airs on Dubai based free satellite network MBC (MBC 4 to be exact). I don't care about canon or non-canon to the Doyle books, if it's good, that's fine with me.
