  1. "Lifeless corpse" just about sums everything in American marine biology journals! Dolphins are aquatic mammals, reefs are marine rocks, seawater is a saline environment! They absolutely revel in tautology, but it is great fun. I can imagine Khan confronting Spock about the absurdities and hug the picture of THAT discussion to myself, two super-intelligent beings dealing with the mysteries of American English, which all started with the famous split infinitive "to boldly go where no man has gone before"!
  2. As far as I can remember, baby-boomers stop in 1965, then it is X 1965-1985, Y is 1985-1999 and then come the millenials, demographically speaking. Hope this helps.
  3. Funny that! There' s one on YouTube about Scandal, from the convention, where the interview takes a whole different texture to it! Also, in the one he did for Adobe, he seemed much more relaxed. How many pairs of those boots has he got anyway? He wore them back in 2013 when BFI did their interview about S2. , he wore them in at least two U.S. Interviews, one right after his marriage, he wore them in the interview with Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington, he wore them for the Adobe event. Are they a sort of personal Belstaff or what? In J.P. 's stunning photo collection the certificate for Sherlock's apparent demise lists M.L. Holmes as next of kin. If he is William Sherlock Scott Holmes, might Mycroft be Mycroft Livingstone Holmes? The two great explorers who very nearly reached their goals in the Antarctic and in darkest Africa but did not quite make it in the end?
  4. Congratulations to both, although someone's hair fixation may see me evicted from this forum before long!
  5. Well, the surname isn't unusual, there is Ian Holmes who played in that lovely series of Game ,Set and Match!
  6. Hi! For me it is a long-standing phenomenon, going back to the nineteenth century. The Sherlock fans tend to get a bit hot under the collar over several issues. This forum was suggested by a friend of mine, to vent my frustrations over some things I didn't particularly like in the modernized version. In answer to your last question, Luçon, France, and I hope you do well in your research paper, as I am myself deep into a project of using marine flora extracts to protect ship hulls from rot.
  7. Instead of debating, why not try using BC's actual face in one of those applications which let you try on different looks and styles? Then it will become obvious that his face cannot support some looks and not look slightly ridiculous. Game over for the Byronic curls, will rewatch Series 1 ASAP!
  8. Sadly, I missed the deadline, or I could have attempted to translate into French! As for the quizzes, got 21/24 correct, it thinks I'm Sherlock for goodness' sake, and I scored 8/8 in another case-related one. Something's wrong with that algorithm, or I'm off my head!
  9. Sorry, couldn't muster up enough energy to ask what the ugly thing was called! It is an eyesore, but to each one their taste, after all! If I had to live in a place with that wallpaper, though, not just stay for a limited time, disfiguring it would have been a favourite pastime! And it is not fleur de lys, it is good old Liberty 1890s acanthus leaf design. (Shudder!)
  10. It was a funny old moment when someone in the audience asked Andrew Scott about his favourite line, someone else shouted "Did you miss me?" and he actually said he had never said those words, but picked the line about people dying, just before the "I'll burn the heart out of you speech! What the *#*#? If he didn't say that phrase, who did? He appeared in the mind palace scene all right!
  11. Seriously, they haven't even decided WHICH stories they would like to follow up on, or what the ancillary plot lines would be, according to what Mr Gatiss replied at the convention yesterday, and that we should expect a back story concerning the two brothers, which was ruthlessly deleted from the Great Game about their past history that we should expect in thirty years! Does that gentleman think he will live forever? Racking a subject of the crown has been abolished since Cromwell, so they had better make good on their promises or quit while they're still ahead of the game!
  12. If nothing definitive has been publicised by the two male leads' agents or themselves, then nothing is written in stone ( a delightful whydunnit mystery title in the Wexford series, by the way,) so nothing is finalized! What a pity, I was really looking forward to another satisfying series of modern Sherlock before getting bored out of my mind and looking elsewhere for a satisfactory replacement. Anyone here with good reviews on Elementary? I do so not like a female Watson, but needs must when the devil drives!
  13. And yet you are using the moment when he returns to the flat and throws Mrs Hudson into a fit of hysterics, which is a direct copy -paste not only of the story The Empty House, but also of the Jeremy Brett series when he has locked himself out in The Noble Bachelor, so you have combined your fascination with the modern series with both the ACD universe and the best Victorian version! Excellent choice!
  14. While I certainly don't consider Moftiss to be perfect, lack of imagination is clearly not one of their faults. So it seems highly unlikely that they are limited to those two options. It's not like they've never surprised us before! Could you possibly elucidate on this particular point? It is not a matter of imagination, it is the impossibility of creating an AU Sherlock. Either the two main characters get on with solving crimes as per, or they establish a whole enlarged family around a proverbial loner. Dr Who solutions have been ruled out, we are being treated to a Victorian/Edwardian Special BECAUSE some stories cannot be translated to 21st century norms, so unless Kirk et al. do their famous time warp and get Gary 7 (aka Sherlock) to help them out, which would be a funny plot twist given what Spock once said about an ancestor of his and the improbable, whatever remains is one of the two choices. Please, do share your thoughts on the matter!
  15. Whatever the shortcomings of A Scandal in... , it is a story of mutual attraction! She enmeshes him in her toils in this version and in the original, in this one through the contents of her gadget, in the story through the accidental participation in her marriage. He keeps the infamous "camera phone" in Belgravia, he keeps the sovereign she gives him as a token of her thanks in Bohemia, which I find particularly moving in the Granada series, because the memory of her lies on his bedside table when he is asleep and on his person every waking moment. She teaches him to respect female intelligence in both cases! If he were the marrying kind, both the American opera singer and the modern businesswoman would have had very little trouble getting under his protective carapace/armour.
  16. For crying out loud! The creators have an either/or option, on the exclusion principle! Sherlock and Dr Watson get together again, in proper post -The Empty House ACD universe or develop a multiverse option of Mary/Mrs Smith with a happy family life and an increasingly lonely, unstable, unsustainable main character, whose limited self-worth cannot compete with his intellect! If they mean to finish with a flourish and kill him off to accomplish what even his creator couldn't sustain in the end, more power to them! As for Mary's past, it is to be found in several confidential files, including her own USB. Who's to say that together with his "prepared words" the good doctor did not throw the actual flash drive in the fire but a copy thereof?
  17. I agree, the aggrieved elder brother may even have had a hand in ensuring Sherlock's return to 'England' which needs his dragon-slaying abilities! Pressure points remain John & Mary the former assassin, not to forget the possible baby! If we live that long, we may get to watch the series! However, if their scheduling remains problematic there will be an issue of hair, eventually, because of the main character's age. Slicked-back is more becoming in a fortyish Sherlock.
  18. Sorry, that was not mind-reading, that was a rather good process of deductions that added up to what seemed to the hapless bystander as mind-reading, and it was not even ACD who created it but Edgar Allan Poe in The Gold Bug.
  19. Don't be led astray by avatars, yusree dear! Inge is a girl's name, not like Sherlock, albeit handicapped by being German ^_^! What does yours mean, if I may be permitted to ask? Mine is an acronym, by the way. Abilities are one thing, but he is not deducing thought patterns, he seems to be reading her thoughts!
  20. If they film it April-June 2016 then there is a distinct possibility they will go for a summer slot, thus going full circle to S1, which is the optimistic version! But if they keep drawing out the time in between, everybody should get used to Benedict's slicker hair, like in the Special, definitely no more curls by 2022!
  21. I agree, and the evident silences during he airport scene are evidence of the great attempt he is making to keep John in the dark, combined with what he does tell the good doctor "Six months, my brother estimates" "The game is never over". To add to the Dumas parallel, D'Artagnan is also prompt to make snap judgements and insult everybody around, with his Gascon impatience of fools.
  22. Talking about the hallway wallpaper, anyone contemplating buying that leaf pattern should actually go to a shop that sells the ugly stuff. It is grainy, textured, not smooth, perhaps because Mrs Hudson wants something she can wipe clean after her eccentric lodger's many explosive experiments, it is of an indifferent cream background with the leaf motif done in drab olive green. It also seems to be a London favourite, since the B & B off Edgware Road was entirely furnished with it. Having to stare at the sheer repetitive drabness for any length of time was mind-numbing. However does Sherlock tolerate it and instead takes his boredom out on the almost Liberty-like pattern above the couch, I cannot understand! On the other hand, it is a really bad obsession on my part when I am doing a lesson on blogs, and a curly- haired (blond) from Nantes is named Benoit and I immediately think of BC! ,
  23. I tend to agree that the main characters have a very broad idea, since in the article Mr Motfat says that BC and Mark Gatiss more or less dissuaded him from doing a Dr Who crossover, which would have been distinctly off-putting. J.P. definitely needs to create a file, not that there will be any concrete answers forthcoming from such old pros, but just for fun!
  24. Surely, in the premises discussed above E and F are mutually exclusive. Either the Holmes brothers have stage-managed the whole thing, causing enough time tissue damage for Magnussen to fall down, but not kill him, or he himself stage-manages his suicide by poison in his drink and forcing the desperate genius into committing an entitely uncharacteristic act!
  25. That photo gallery is an absolute treat! Thanks for sharing!
