  1. The Story Behind My Username: Simply put, many years ago and for many years, I was a member of The Sound Of The Baskervilles, a Scion Society in the Pacific Northwest. In that club my "Canonical Name" was Inspector Baynes. from The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge. I've just always 'retained' that. The Story Behind My Avatar: I THINK the 'avatar' is the little circular thingy with the pic in it showing who is 'speaking.' How did I come up with this one? It was available 'free', I found it, and thought 'well...it might look like an inspector, who knows.' There you have it.
  2. From a brief available snippet: What is hedonism and how does it affect your health? "Studies show pleasurable emotions are associated with broader and more creative thinking, and a range of positive outcomes including better resilience, social connectedness, well-being, physical health, and longevity. So, pleasure might not only help us to live more enjoyably, but longer. Hedonism includes enjoying simple pleasures." I'll take it..! 🤣
  3. Indeed. good idea. This is all going to be entirely too much fun, you do know that, right? 😆
  4. It is mine. A "screen snip" of the book cover from my Kindle. Everything I post will be mine. I'm too pesky about copyright issues to use other people's stuff. (Unless I have written permission.) re: "Click on the BB code", thanks. I usually prefer smaller images, but there are times the big one is better..!
  5. Testing this link thingy again. AHA. There we go. I'm off and running. I'll do a book review on this one in "The Book Store" thread soon...
  6. So Imgur looks like a place where one posts random images, a URL exists, then that url is used to hijack the unsuspecting image and display it here in the post environment, correct? I'll go check it out some more. Sounds like a reasonable solution for the short term anyway. (Now I sense a building excitement for setting up my own website again... argh.)
  7. How very kind of you to offer. What we're saying I believe is I need to get a regular 'website' of my own, upload my images to that 'website', then link to my images using this Forum's "link" function. I can deal with that. Was just hoping there was a simpler way. Since I love to write, if I stick up a website I'm liable to fill it with all my 'stuff' as well... 🤪 I'll check Imgur out and see about it. I've set up websites before...but found my use of them did not justify the cost. (Now that I'm fossilizing, perhaps I can use them better.) Thanks again.
  8. OK so here I am again. I would like to stick a book cover in a post. It's a pic on my computer. How do I "upload" an attachment so I can use it in the post? I can find "my attachments" but not how to get one in there to use.
  9. I would be happy to over time. Is there a particular thread for "Book Reviews" already? (I'll do a search). If not maybe I'll start a new thread. I'll figure out how to include images too, so a pic of the Book cover, and maybe the Table of Contents, can be seen. (The Table of Contents is sometimes helpful for folks too.) "The work is its own reward." (NORW)
  10. Well, it appears you may be stuck with me for awhile, so... perhaps some resurrections will continue here and there. I'm nothing, if not persistent. 😁
  11. The Casebooks will likely be my 'most visited' place for awhile, so if I jump on a few of the stories don't be surprised. Hopefully we'll get some friendly participation. There's a great deal to discuss.
  12. Oh, difficult. there are so many I cannot do without: Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street A Study in Sherlock The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes The Sherlock Holmes Ultimate Smoking Companion About Being a Sherlockian 221B: Studies in Sherlock Holmes A Sherlock Holmes Commentary Sherlockian Musings Baker Street Studies So many more. Any of these you haven't read, I highly recommend them all. (And could add some.)
  13. Hum. This will be one I work through soon... holding several chronologies from others, always wanting to 'get at it', yet always setting it aside for other more immediate interests. I do not wish this to be said of me as I re-engage in the affairs of Doylean and Sherlckian escapades in the world: "...the time has come when we feel that we have a right to ask you straight how much you do know of the business."
  14. Well OK, that's me..!! Need-Help be my middle name. How do I make sure, as I look at any thread, I'm seeing the 'most recent' posts to the thread first? Looking at 'stuff', it SEEMS to me the dating is a bit all over the place. This being only the 2nd Forum I've ever joined, and my age being what it is, my first name is "Confused". So... "Confused Need-Help Baynes" is me. Thanks. Meanwhile, I'll continue groveling about. EDIT: Hum. Now that I look again, it seems if I enter a topic and just go to the very last page, I see the 'most recent'. It's just that stuff is pretty old in pretty many places. So... can it be flipped around somehow, so 'most recent posts' come up first?? If not, clicking the last page is just another click and drag affair. Thanks again.
  15. Thank you for the welcome, and your perspective regarding Irene, related circumstances, and potential deductions/conclusions. I'll review them thoroughly. I'll also give a glance at the 17step... target of interest you've been so kind as to provide. I look forward to it.
  16. Indeed. In the realms within which I dabble here in my later years, I've constructed a place called "The Great Halls of Speculation". All things without clear answer are logged into the Halls, catalogued with the caretaker, and shelved. They are of course periodically checked out, laid before the general public, hashed over again, and (almost inevitably) returned to the Halls as yet unresolved. "the fun is in the hunt."
  17. Frankly, I was (am) seeking a Sherlock Holmes forum where discussion about Sherlock, Doyle, and all related works is held. Many years I spent studying the Canon (and related), writing some few essays that have been published in a few Journals, and such. Then I needed to withdraw from the involvement for several years. More recently, reaching a fairly 'ripe (almost) old age', I'm deep into Tolkien's lore at last, and am now seeking to add back Sherlock, a love I've never lost though long sidelined. So...there you have it.
  18. I have sat at table with Leslie Klinger, and he has signed some of my books. Interesting gentleman. It boggles my brain how he can have a large family as he does, attend to his legal profession, and still find time to do such an extensive 3-volume Annotated Sherlock Holmes... and his 10-volume Sherlock Holmes Reference Library, (much more extensive than his Annotated). Anyway, this just to clarify He is indeed a He, and from the brief time I had with him while he was in town, and my email correspondence with him back in the day, quite a nice person into the bargain.
  19. The use of 'late' in either adjective or adverb form always refers to it's target, which clarifies which of its common definitions is to be applied. "She was late" is very different than "The late she". Or to clarify in this particular case, "Irene Adler was late" is very different from "The late Irene Adler." Another example: "Late of the British Army" is very different from "the late British Army". When the adjective "late" is directly applied to a person as its target, the meaning is always 'deceased'. I do not think Doyle would have missed the proper application of the word with its corresponding meaning.
