Well, now that we have seen a bit of what the first two episodes will contain (although not much, really), what do you think the third episode's "Bow" means?  They won't film it until later this summer, so let the speculation begin :)

Posted

Oh, good, several months to speculate without those annoying spoiler interruptions!

As has already been mentioned somewhere on this forum, it's possible that "bow" means they'll use the case from "His Last Bow" -- as a cliffhanger, rather than as Sherlock's actual last case.

But that's just one wild guess.  Let's have some more!

Posted

Well, since it is supposed to be a cliff hanger, and we have, as yet, no guarantee of a Season Four, it could very well be Sherlock's "Last Bow" as in no more BBC Sherlock. A real shame, but I suppose a real possibility as well.

Posted

We cannot rule that out as impossible, of course, but I don't consider it highly probable.  The show is apparently one of the BBC's most popular.

Posted

SInce Cumberbatch has confirmed that he and Freeman have already signed up for Season 4, it seems unlikely, bless them.

And as Steven Moffat has promised yet another cliffhanger to end Season 3 with, that's probably what "bow" is about.

On a related note, any idea what "rat" was referring to?

Posted

Bow could very well mean any story in the last book of short stories, too- but I would wager it is the last story in the canon, just reworked to fit a younger Sherlock.  Really, the last one could be about him actually doing a job for the gov't like the real story, and then just change it however.  I'm scared of but excited about what the cliffhanger would be.

Oh, and people are saying there might be another big spoiler for the next episode:

People are saying that Molly is wearing what looks like a wedding ring on her left hand, and that she might be married to Lestrade. That would definitely be interesting :)

Umm, sorry, no.  Cumberbatch did say something along those lines, but apparently either misspoke or was misquoted.  He later made another public statement basically saying the opposite.  See this thread for the details, such as we have them.

My suspicion is that he and Freeman have told Hartswood that they're willing to do another series.  This implies that Hartswood is also interested in doing another -- however, they don't control the purse strings, the BBC does.  So until the BBC agrees to fund another series, there's nothing official.

Mind you, that does not mean that there won't be a fourth series, merely that we don't know yet.

Bborchar, I like your spoiler!

Posted

That Molly is wearing a ring is very intriguing! I do wonder who the lucky man will be.

Any way, the stories included in the "Last Bow" are things like "The Adventure of The Dying Detective", "The Adventure ofThe Devil's Foot", "The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax", "The Adventure of the Red Circle" and "The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge". Some of these stories have to do with foreign spies and intrigue. Maybe he goes under cover? Or a Bond type of secret mission?

Oooh :(. But thanks for the link, anyway - given how passionate everyone seems about the show, and how successful it is, here's to hoping it'll be around for many more seasons.

About bborchar's spoiler, Geny has that particular photo (spoiler, duh) on tumblr (it's from some Chinese site apparently, the hunt for Sherlock spoilers seems really international), and yes, that sure does look like one. Also, there are suspiciously many photos of the two of them together, even if most of these seem to be between-scenes-playing-around.

His last bow could definitely be adapted loosely into a thriller and cliffhanger. I like the adventure of the dying detective, but I don't see how it could be adapted as such.

Posted

Mofftiss said something about there being more criminals in the world then Moriarty and more threatening then "The Master Blackmailer". In the "Adventure of the Wisteria Lodge" there is the South American villain "The Tiger".

If they use the case from "His Last Bow," I assume we can expect the episode title to be a variation on that, and quite possibly another horrible pun.  "His Fast Cow"?

As for the spoilers, I'm wondering whether some of them are legit:

Molly's ring and John's mustache could well have been photo-shopped.  Has anybody seen more than one shot of either?

And UK TV shows (Particularly soap operas) are known for filming spoof scenes and alternative resolutions in an attempt to confound both the press, and set spotters.

That's interesting, Tim -- dunno whether that's done over here or not.  I suspect that the two items I mentioned above may be fan-generated hoaxes.  But the scene with

the hypnotist changing John's memory

seems likely to be the sort of "official" spoof you mention.  I sure hope it doesn't end up in the show -- but it'd be fun to have on the DVD!

Isn't the thing you use with a violin a bow, too? I remember (I think from one of the audio commentaries) Benedict Cumberbatch mentioning that he was going to practice the violin harder for season three, but it's probably unrelated.

As for

the mustache, that appears to be genuine - this blog (heavy spoilers, even more so for the day before) has a report of the filming as well as photos, and if it's a photoshop it's a damn fine job.

Indeed it is. But according to Mofftiss the verbal clue for "His Last Bow" the "Bow" is supposed to rhyme with cow. The violin bow rhymes with sow, crow, and the like. So, either they are trolling us all, again. Or....well....as usual.....it leaves us with questions and not a whole lot of answers.

Right, it's like "take a bow" rather than like "violin bow."  Moftiss first announced the three words at a public appearance with Andrew Scott, and each of them said one of the words aloud.  I believe I heard that Scott not only said "bow," he also spelled it (so people wouldn't think it was "bough" as in tree branch).  That combination of spelling and pronunciation narrows it down to "take a bow" or "bow [front end] of a ship."

As for your spoiler comment & links, Caya:

One site says (and shows) there's a mustache in an E1 scene, and the other says there's definitely not in another E1 scene (agreeing with some E2 shots), so apparently it's a temporary thing.  Too bad, I kinda like it!

Oh dear ... three decades of grappling with the English language and such nuances still sail right over my head. Thanks for pointing that out, Fox! Well, there goes that theory.

As for

the mustache, from what I've read John wears it only in the beginning of the episode (also, it's fake). Personally, I think it makes him look kinda older, so I'm glad it's not a keeper.

There are enough nuances in English to trip up anyone now and then, even those of us who have grown up surrounded by the language. For example, Fox mentioned that a violin bow rhymes with sow and crow, and that's true for the s-o-w that means to plant seeds. However, the s-o-w that means a mature female pig is pronounced to rhyme with cow, how, and now.  (There are at least four o-w words that have two meanings with different pronunciations: bow, mow, row, and sow.)

D'you mean fake as in John's wearing a fake mustache, or fake as in Martin Freeman's wearing a fake mustache (which he must be, since he didn't have one just a couple of weeks earlier in Portrait With Grapes)?

Yeah, this hit me a few hours after I made the post....silly me.

Oh boy ... I was aware of the row one (the sports activity/the quarrel, right?) but the others are all news to me. Learn something new every day, thanks :).

As for the mustache, I meant that Freeman's was fake ... Aimee, the blogger, wrote he was clean-shaven the day before.

A real blast, at times.

Don't worry about it :)  My husband is a native English speaker and a nuclear engineer, and he STILL mispronounces simple words like "offense".  One day he said "that was OFfensive to me" instead of "ofFENsive" (the first means the opposite of defense, the second means something you don't agree with).  I have studied several languages (I can speak rusty Japanese, too), and I mess stuff up all the time.  I wish I were as fluent as you in any of them ;)
