So, as I mentioned the other day here, "The Mentalist" feels like a take on Sherlock Holmes. There was also discussion somewhere else about "House" being another take on it. So I decided to start a topic and see how many shows we can easily see as inspired by/a take on Sherlock.

So, so far we have:

  • The Mentalist
  • House
Any more?

I'd say The Mentalist just steals stuff from Derren Brown rather than being a 'take' on Sherlock. House takes a lot from Holmes, for example his apartment is 221b Baker Street, New Jersey.

Spock, and subsequently Data, from the Star Trek universe were fashioned on a Holmesian model. Dirk Gently sort of plays with a holistic framework in the Sherlock style.

Funnily enough Holmes is often referred to as a reworked 'take' on Poe's Dupin .

I read somewhere that Sherlock Holmes wa sinspired by a character in Dickens' Bleak House.

To quote Spock: "An ancestor of mine maintained that when you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." So not just "fashioned on" but actually "descended from." Apparently Amanda Grayson had Holmes blood in her veins. ;)

I had some fun with a guy on IMDb who thought that Sherlock (2010) had stolen the quote from Quinto's Spock of Star Trek (2009). I pointed out your above quote from 'Undiscovered Country' (1991) to him and over the course of two days had him realise that Sherlock was the originator of the phrase.

Fun times!

OMG, that's hilarious! I bet that was fun. File that under "Things that make you wonder about people."

Next they'll be saying that the BBC "stole" the idea for the character of Holmes from Data's holodeck adventures in Star Trek The Next Generation!

And, depending where/who that came from, we wouldn't be surprised... *sigh*

Sadly, that is so true.

There's a thread discussing Elementary here: Lucy Liu Cast as Watson in CBS's "Elementary" if you'd like to see what others have made of the show.

As Undead Medic says, there's already a thread for Elementary -- so all I'll say here is that I've been watching it, and consider it to be a ripoff only in the sense that CBS saw the popularity of Sherlock and decided to do a modern-day Holmes of their own. Other than that, the shows are very different. Meet me over on the Elementary thread, and I'll be glad to elaborate on that.

Interesting. Music copyright laws often seem to be ignored internationally. I once heard a note-for-note familiar tune from a Bollywood (India's "Hollywood") movie, and assumed that it must be a Hindi translation of the song "A Kiss to Build a Dream On." Turned out it was actually an award-winning "original" composition!

Do you have any idea what the Russian show is about? If you can find it on YouTube again, could you post either the title of the video or a link to it? Thanks!

An associate of mine says that the Russian version of Hound is one of the best he's ever seen. Apparently you can get it on Netflix? He praises the acting, the production values, everything really highly (and he is a proper Englishman: :) )

This is funny -- I was just reading about that movie (at least I assume it's the same one) yesterday in Amazon's free sample of The Many Watsons, one of the Save Undershaw books.

Sorry, I was going to post a quote from the relevant paragraph, but my internet connection doesn't seem to like Amazon tonight. As I recall, though, it was also highly complimentary.

Here's news (via Sherlockology) of a different kind of "take" on Holmes -- a talking dog named Sherlock Bones (whose "Watson" is a high-school boy).

There's a nice write-up on Anime News Network.
