Well, it finally happened. Benedict Cumberbatch won his BAFTA award last night. Huzzah!

The three films made mention of were:

      "Fifth Estate"

     "!2 Years A Slave"

    "August: Osage County"

I don't entirely understand the BAFTAs, but the following sentence has just been added to Benedict Cumberbatch's Wikipedia page:

In November 2013, he was honoured by BAFTA Los Angeles with a Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year for his "masterful performances in television, film and theatre.

... and the two links within that quote will take you to explanations of the terminology.  The British Artist of the Year award appears to be every bit as impressive as it sounds, and well deserved -- congratulations, Mr. Cumberbatch!

Here also are links to coverage by RadioTimes, Reuters news service, and BAFTA.org itself.

... actor Gary Oldman ....

... alias Harry Potter's godfather Sirius Black, if you can't quite place the name.

Thank you for the link! That is a good interview, indeed. I like the question about what scenes would he rescue from a burning pile of his work (and thank you, Mr. C., for choosing, among other things, not only the rooftop scene from Sherlock but also a bit out of Parades End, too - the only television I in some moods even prefer to the great series we discuss here)... And did you notice, Carol, he mentioned Kenneth Branagh? Maybe he will do Hamlet yet...

Totally off on a tangent, but one of these days, I've got to see Branagh in some role (any role!) other than Gilderoy Lockhart!  (I suspect I'd really like his Wallander.)

Back to your off-topic moment -- Branagh has also played Victor Frankenstein, so why not Cumberbatch as Hamlet?!

[i have been asked who the heck is Gilderoy Lockhart, so I shall explain that he's the character Branagh played in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets -- a foppish, self-centered, incompetent twit.]

And Sherlockology has posted this BBCAmerica video of Benedict Cumberbatch's BAFTA acceptance speech:

Catch the series 2 episode The Man Who Smiled and you also get Rupert Graves and Tom Hiddleston - both good reasons to watch it!

Since I don't want to start a thread just for this, and this one here's BAFTA-related, too:

Here's an article about that "In Conversation" interview Benedict Cumberbatch gave for BAFTA-NY. Including a video (almost an hour long).

Thank you so much for the link! I never find good interviews on my own and this one was really interesting. I love it when the interviewer actually lets the guest talk and when they get beyond the most common phrases.
