I got this idea from Caya's post of the puppy and Clydesdale's. But since it is kind of a spoiler for "His Last Vow", View at your own risk.

This has spoilers for "His Last Vow"

I think we can safely say that Redbeard is an official Sherlock character now, so there's absolutely no reason why he shouldn't have his own thread.

And as long as we're all here, does anyone know if Redbeard (or his name) might come from canon?

Canon tells so little about Holmes's home life. Never a mention of his parents, we don't even learn that he has a brother until some eight years into the Holmes and Watson partnership. This may be just my head canon, but according to Mycroft, in "ASiB" initially Sherlock wanted to be a pirate. I think this dog was Sherlock's childhood only friend and confidant, and was probably his piratical First Mate hence the piratical name. Being an Irish Setter, he most certainly was "red".

OK, so apparently he's not straight from canon.  I thought maybe one of the stories might have mentioned a pirate named Redbeard -- I agree, the name sounds like a pirate reference of some sort.

I guess Redbeard's backstory is another item we can add to the Series 4 wish list!

I think some kind of piratical type happenings took place in "The Gloria Scott" the mutiny and all. But nothing concrete other then that comes to mind. Well there it the peg legged sailor and his pigmy mate and a great treasure hunt in "The Sign of Four" and there is a boat chase up the Thames....and "The Black Peter" so....yeah...here and there, I suppose.

But no Redbeard, huh?  Well then, I would hope we'll be enlightened in some future series of Sherlock.

What I'm trying to say is, maybe "Redbeard" is a reference to a human -- or even a thing -- in canon (and not a dog at all).  I'll be keeping my eyes open for any "Redbeard" or "red beard."  It just seems like a really odd name to have come out of thin air.

The Duke in The Adventure of the Priory School is described as having "a long, dwindling beard of vivid red", but I think that's coincidence.

Hhhmmmhmm and I am beginning to wonder if anything Moffat, Gatiss and Co. is ever coincidence. So who knows, it could have sparked something. I will be posting more pictures after Sunday's showing of "HLV" of course everyone else is free and welcome to contribute as well.

If you look at the series of Dr Who, all the plots tied up at the ends.  I have a feeling tha t 'Sherlock' will probably follow suit. :sherlock2::watson:

Oh no! I was wondering and wondering why Redbeard's death was such a big deal for Sherlock and I never "got" that explanation in the show. Oh, that is so sweet. So that's one of the reasons why Mycroft keeps telling Sherlock he is stupid. Mycroft is really a very hateful older brother!

Okay, rant warning: Mycroft is a problem. A big one. I never really liked him (although I do love how Gatiss plays him and he gets some great lines), but since series 3, I have a serious aversion to him. To begin with, what kind of a brother sits by and actually enjoys watching his allegedly beloved (and I think he does love Sherlock in his very own strange way) sibling being tortured? I am sure Sherlock knows him well enough to be right about the enjoyment bit. I would have hated that scene no matter what, but Mycroft's part in it really turned my stomach. And all we've learned about their childhood together has only served to strengthen my indignation. The poor parents. I can imagine having a son like Sherlock, but one like Mycroft? No thank you.

Well, you could if you have any of the Annotated Sherlock Holmes, but then, the side notes aren't written by Doyle either.
