Does any of you think that Mary might have been working for Moriarty? I mean she did say that if John read the information, he wouldn't love her anymore. And she had already shot John's best friend and lied to him, he was already really angry, so what could be worse than that? The thing that would be so bad he would definitely leave her? Moriarty maybe? Just a theory though.

It's a possibility that she was indeed working for Moriarty but it's not an absolute given. She could have been working for Mycroft just as easily.  I think Mary was afraid that since John was already angry at her for shooting Sherlock, and for not being "normal", she was probably afraid if John learned that she had worked as a CIA operative then went "rogue" would only alienate him even more.

 

 John was ready to kick her out of Baker Street and out of his life. What ever was on that drive was only going to make things worse, no matter who she worked for.

I keep wondering tho .... she greatly underestimated both Sherlock and John by assuming neither of them would be willing to give her a second chance. But they did. Maybe her secret is something SHE finds unforgiveable, but is something that John, at least, would not. I admit I can't imagine what such a thing would be, but it makes me wonder if she isn't still underestimating her two boys.

 

Also, we only have CAM's word for it that she "went rogue" (and I'm not even sure he said that ... I remember she said he was a "bad girl.") The truth might be somewhat different. Then again, she might be even worse than I can possibly imagine ....

 

And it's also quite possible that we'll never know! That's what I thought at first, but lately I've started to feel this is just too big a mystery to let it lie. Guess we'll find out one way or the other .... someday.

  Good point and something I had thought early on, but seem to have forgotten. But yeah, CAM was more then capable of lying about anything. He certainly did it in his news papers. He could have been making Mary sound worse then she really was just to torment John.

 

  CAM might not have used the exact word, but it does seem she left the CIA and was working on her own certainly for someone else anyway.

If I worked for the CIA I'd leave them too, I for one certainly wouldn't fault her for that!    Maybe she pulled an Edward Snowden.

Or maybe she found someone who paid better and let her do more hits.

Or maybe the CIA found her to be too much of a risk. Her personality could make her the perfect assassin but she doesn't seem to value anything but her own interests. Can't imagine her valuing the CIA's over her own.
