Sherlock: The Musical -- why not ?

Recommended Posts

Jess, have you seen the DVD of "My Fair Lady"?  One of the special features on ours is the undubbed version of Audry Hepburn actually singing "Wouldn't it be Loverly," and I think I actually like her version better than Marni Nixon's, precisely because it's not quite so polished.  The reason given for dubbing her was that her own voice wasn't quite up to the more sophisticated songs later in the movie, and I suppose they're right about that.

Oh Carol, I wish I had your edition... I didn't know that version was on any official DVDs. I'll have to keep an eye out on Amazon.

I much prefer actors singing the songs in musicals themselves. I don't mind amateurish singing, I quite enjoy it, in fact. I prefer genuine-sounding over polished.

Unless your DVD is just the movie, you may already have that.  Unfortunately, Hepburn's singing isn't used in the actual movie on our DVD, but it is included as one of the extras.  What we have is the Two-Disc Special Edition.  (They also mention that Jeremy Brett's singing was dubbed, even though he was a professional singer!  But they do not include his undubbed version, alas.)

I've heard all kinds of singing in musicals (from the nearly operatic style on my parent's original-cast records of Oklahoma! to very naturalistic to downright bad.  My preference depends on the musical and on the character -- for example, the ladies dance group in The Music Man is *supposed* to sing discordantly.  In general, I prefer naturalistic-but-competent -- but I'd probably take naturalistic-but-bad over operatic (unless the musical was actually about opera singers).

In the case of My Fair Lady, I would have preferred that they use Hepburn's actual singing for her pre-transformation songs, and then dub Nixon's voice in for her more sophisticated numbers.  Seems like that would be the best fit.

I am not at all musical, but I love good acting, and I think the voice is an essential part of that. I refuse to watch dubs. So no wonder I prefer an actor's own voice over a professional singer's any day. Of course, ideally, you get someone for the part who can act and sing equally well, but if I have to chose one, I'll take the actor any time.

You know I have to admit that I was really disappointed to learn that Pavarotti couldn't act. Let me see good acting versus his voice. That's a tough call, that man sends chills down my spine when he hits those higher tenor notes. Whoooo!

Back *ahem* on topic:

This article mentions that Amanda Abbington "started her career as a dancer."  So there's another one for the musical episode!

And Martin has a descent singing voice, Una Stubbs is a dancer......so BC (Sherlock) after voice lessons, John also singing. Mary and Mrs. Hudson dancing....it's shaping up nicely I think.

A musical episode of Sherlock would be so cool!  :D

There's a Sherlock Musical Spoof if you've not seen it:

That is utterly brilliant!  I especially like the way they....

... start singing the tune of "The Game is on" theme partway through.

You may get an opportunity to see a Sherlock music concert in the near future:

I've always regretted that I didn't make the effort to go to a Lord of the Rings concert conducted by Howard Shore that was nearby.

And I'm still regretting not attending the very first Star Trek convention.  A friend of mine went, and I could have taken the train down to NYC with her.  But noooooo, I wasn't gonna do anything that childish.

Nowadays if I'm trying to decide whether or not to attend something, I think, "If I go / don't go, am I gonna regret that decision for the rest of my life?"  It's usually pretty obvious when I think of it in those terms, and that technique hasn't let me down yet.

And -- to hijack this thread back on topic for a moment -- we now have a drummer for our Sherlock musical (as long as we don't simultaneously want a clarinet player).
