Hi there,

I'm obviously new to the forum - and I'm always wary when I join a new board that folk will think I'm spamming. Some boards can be very aggressive and suspicious of new folk.

So - hoepfully you'll all hear me out.

I've read a lot of the Holmes stories (including the slightly dodgy Mary Russell books) - and I've been very impressed by the BBC retelling/reimagining - far more than I would have expected.

I design tshirts (I'm not here trying to promote or sell anything - honest) - and I'm currently tinkering with some ideas based on Sherlock.

What I need is some help...I'm trying to decribe Holmes (and Watson) in 5 words - I need clear descriptive words for their personalities (both the brilliant and the infuriating). I'm planning on a typographic treatment design for both characters.

If anyone here can think of any good words that really pinpoint their personalities I'd be incredibly chuffed.

Thanks

Duncan

Hi ZombieMedia, Welcome to the forum.

Asking for design input is fine, I would request that you don't post links to any shop pages though, at least not without running them past a mod or admin first.

Thanks - of course I'll check with mods and admins first. I'm initially looking for advice and feedback.

Just a quick q - where in Bristol are you?

Anyways...back on topic...

Undead Medic - can you describe Holmes' personality in 5 (or thereabouts) words?

For Sherlock I would say: Ascerbic, Dismissive, Insightful, Intellectual, crass.

And for John: Loyal, dependable, Moral, Frustrated, Bored

Oooh - I like Ascerbic

Posted

Sherlock: Restless, Obsessed, Sociopath, Ascerbic, Decisive, Narcissistic

John: Brave, Moral, Crack-Shot, Dependable, Friend

would be my thoughts

AHHH Yes, I like "Dismissive" for Sherlock, but we must keep in mind that he is only dismissive of certain things...human things...

Hi guys,

It's been a long time since I've darkened your doors - I finally managed to produce a Sherlock tshirt - it's up for voting at one of the big daily tee sites at the moment.

I'm going to show you the design - but not the link (unless i get clearance).

I'd love to know what you think of it - I'm quite proud of the outcome. It's based on the Saul Bass graphic work from Anatomy Of A Murder mixed with the Reichenbach Fall.

Oh dear, not a shirt that I would personally choose to wear, I'm afraid. Very striking design, though!

Do you really like Sherlock?

I mean, we are fans of him. We don't want him to be dead (and he is not btw). So why wear a shirt on which the most amazing man who (n)ever existed lies in a pool of blood on the floor?

Also in my mind it looks too much like the original picture of 'Anatomy of a Murder'. I have never seen the film, but from what I heard of it I don't see the relation to Sherlock.

Plus the shirt he wears has the wrong colour.

But (except for the colour, that's a fact) that's only my opinion. I hope other people like it more and vote for you.

Good luck!

Thanks for your reply Nathan.

I do really like Sherlock - the design is a homage to the Saul Bass graphics of Anatomy Of A Murder - it's not a direct relation to Sherlock. It's more taking two cultural references and attempting to merge them together.

I know Holmes is not dead.

Also the blue is supposed to be his scarf rather than his shirt.

Thanks :)

Cheers Carol - but why "Oh dear"?

It's been a while, but I believe that was sort of a Mrs. Hudson "oh dear" (even though there's no bag of thumbs, there's blood and broken limbs).

It's just a matter of personal preference.  If I were going to wear a Reichenbach-themed Sherlock t-shirt, I would choose something with a more positive outlook, like "I stand with John Watson."

Or something that at least suggested that he actually survived. Maybe having a shot of his face at the cemetery overexposed over the body on the sidewalk?

Right.  Anything that focuses more on the "then what?" rather than on the fall as the end of things.

I suspect that when you say you like Sherlock, you're referring to the program, and we all like the program, of course, or we wouldn't be here on this forum.  But some of us also feel affection(?) for the character Sherlock, as well as for other characters such as John, almost as if we actually knew them.  So it's hard to see a "friend" displayed as a stylized corpse.

I think it's excellent, except the words are superfluous.  Anyone who knows the poster will get it, those that aren't familiar won't get it from the words, either.   Unfortunately, I also think it will be outdated before you can produce it.

It might be interesting, though, considering the "modern Sherlock" and what will be in future iconic moments from the show, to do something similar to the opening of Mad Men - the falling - which I believe would not become outdated.

Posted

AllIn1, could you show us a sample of that Mad Men opening?  Based on my vague imagination of it, I agree, something without the actual "splat" would be more dynamic, with more continuing appeal (and less distressing to us wimps).

ZombieMedia, I do apologize for making up my own question, rather than answering the one that you actually asked!

Hi guys - I'm back (again)...

I've got another Sherlock shirt up for votes at Qwertee - it's a play on the classic Jesus Is My Homeboy tshirt from back in the day.

Benedict Is My Holmesboy (I've also done a Downey Jr one, and I'm working on Basil)

Any votes would be much appreciated :)
