There's still no official announcement of Freeman's role, but the guessing go on.  This article provides rationales for seven possibilities (though one of them is the Red Skull, which has already been denied by insider Mark Millar).

 

They seem to be deliberately holding off on the announcement, which leads me to believe that either A] it would be a plot spoiler, or B] they want to stir up some fan interest (or C] both).  Maybe he's playing John Harrison?

Sorry, but I don't think that's official, just a repeated rumor.  The author even says, "He is most likely to play...," which doesn't sound particularly definite.

 

Added:  Neither Empire nor Variety has had any news regarding Freeman's role since the simple announcement that he'd be in the movie.  So it's apparently still hush-hush.

I agree, that's a very fairly-written article.

 

It may still be just rumors even during production, like with Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness.  Once the movie hits the theaters, though, the rumors will switch to spoilers for sure.  (Though I probably still won't understand what the revelation means!)

Interesting, that sounds more like a third Avengers movie than one about Cap.

 

Has anyone seen the other Capt. America movies? He was never one of my favorite characters, so I didn't bother to see them, although I like what the actor has done with the role in the bits I have seen. Wondering if they're worth renting.

What Freeman said about his character (in the article Jenny linked to) should pretty well rule out a lot of the rumors and/or guesses that have been circulating.
 

He works for the American government. He works in conjunction with the superheroes, and certain agencies that help to tame the superheroes’ power, I suppose. So you’re not quite sure which side he’s on.

 

But does that help us know what part he is playing?  I'm a total newbie in the Marvel Universe, so am hoping someone else has some idea.

Sounds like an agent of SHIELD to me.

 

I was a huge Marvel fan back when, but they've reinvented their universe so many times since then, I might as well be a newbie.

So Freeman says his character "works for the American government."  Wonder if that means he's playing another American?  Would love to hear him do a southern accent!  Or western.  Or lower-midwestern.  All I've heard him do so far is strictly northern-tier -- Chicago, Minnesota, and New York.

Just found the answer to my own question:

 

 

 

When asked if he will utilize a Minnesotan accent like in the film "Fargo," he replied, "No, East Coast American."

 

... so presumably northern-tier again.

Whoever Freeman is playing, it's apparently a continuing character.  Screen Crush has this quote: "Unless they fire me, it's a role that will carry on."

Expectations are that some footage from Civil War (currently filming in Berlin) will be shown at this weekend's Disney "D23" event, presumably at a panel beginning at 10:30 Saturday morning (1:30 pm New York time, 6:30 pm London time).

 

Another panel will feature seven of the original Mouseketeers.

That panel is still five hours away, but there's been a purported leak on Reddit, describing the contents of the Captain America trailer.  Here's the portion relevant to Freeman's still-unnamed character:

 

We see Martin Freeman's character driving a car.

 

While that's probably a movie first, it's not all that informative, is it?  :P
