Hello from Paris!

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm French!

You are lucky because you don't hear my beautiful french accent!  ;) I hope my english won't be too bad.

Of course I'm here because Sherlock is my favourite serie. I also love other series : Doctor Who, Torchwood, Game of Thrones... I have great sympathy for UK series (Ripper Street, Dickensians...), and adaptations of novels  (Pride and Préjudice, of course, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrel, The Little Dorritt...). And I love reading : classic novels, fantasy, SF...

The 1st time I heard about Sherlock, I was afraid. I feared an adaptation in XXIth century would be wrong. Then I saw the 1st episode, and wow! I love everything : the characters, the plots, the humor, London, the musics (Irene Adler's theme!!)...

Now, I'm glad to read your topics!

See you later!

:)

Hi carabas.. welcome to the forum.

Do play around, and don't be shy.

One question, I met some French during a trip, we had breakfast together every morning and they always dipped their bread into a bowl of... tea. :p They tried to convince me that is how it's done there, but... I am a very skeptical person, maybe it's only their personal preferences. So, is it true? XD

Welcome Carabas! Glad to have you aboard! We need more civilized people to torture keep us on the right track! :d

Usually, French people dip their croissant in the coffee, not bread in tea.

I guess the American equivalent would be dunking donuts into one's coffee (in fact, there's a chain of donut shops named Dunkin' Donuts), or dunking cookies (especially Oreos) in milk.  I've heard that English people dunk their digestive biscuits (sort of like what we call graham crackers) into their tea, but I've never actually witnessed that custom in action.

Anyhow, welcome to Sherlock Forum, carabas!  :welcome:  I'm looking forward to more of your posts.

Or dunking biscotti in either.

I actually like dunking bread or biscuit in coffee. The combination makes sense, but tea.. yes, I think you are right, them, us and couple of other groups are barbarian, we wore the same outfits for days, went barefoot all the time, only had blotchy sunblock for make up and peed in our wetsuits. :)

... we ... peed in our wetsuits. :)

But aren't wetsuits semi-waterproof? So that the pee would kinda hang around inside your pants? Not quite the same effect as peeing in the pool while wearing a bikini, methinks!

Well, I used to have a kitten that peed in my shoes. :D [To be perfectly honest, she actually pooped in my shoes. But that would be off topic.]

I've had more than one cat that loved to stick their head in my shoes and either wrestle with it or just lie there ... absorbing the ambience, I presume. But none of them had ever been to Paris.

Paris??? Oh -- right -- we actually do have a topic here. Sorry, carabas! I'm afraid we have our silly moments. But we're mostly harmless. Honest!

My rabbits also love to wrestle with my shoes. The rabbits haven't been to Paris, but me once for a weekend. Like 10 years ago or so, on the hottest weekend ever. Would never do that again like going anywhere with the travel bus when it's like 40°Celsius....but I saw the Eiffel Tower and Pére Lachaise. :D

Hello from Berlin to Paris!

Let's see, how to explain this in sophisticated way..well, none, told you it's barbaric anyway. I put it in spoiler box because it's..eh... barbaric and a long read.

Beside the inconvenience of taking off a wetsuit (and putting it on is paininthea** since it's supposed to be body hugging),

When scuba dive, there is a physical phenomenon when the body is under pressure, long story short, it increases urine production and the 'need to pee' eventhough you had just done it a short while before.

Then most of the time, especially in good diving location (good= far, untouched, less/non commercialized, difficult to access), we only use dinghy, wooden fishing boat (with or without shade), or narrow boat or anything without a toilet, heck, there is basically nothing else in the boat sometimes. During interval (between dives) sometimes we spend it in empty island with nothing except some throny shrubs and crystal clear water. Take your pick of the dream toilet.

Nasty? Well, maybe. But there are ways and means. It's very flushable with various method. You can pump in a bit of air from your regulator through the neck of the wetsuit, together with water and let it through until it escape from the ankle by position yourself upside down vertically. It can be repeated as many times as you want, you can also just stretch the neck area to get water without the need to pump air. Air is my own invention to provide nicer and surer way. :p However, it's not easy to stay buoyant upside down for novice divers. So yeah, they are nasty. XD

When we climb to the boat, using ladder or sometimes just have to propel oneself, you can use the same method by letting water get inside from the neck, it could be done repeatedly, best when the boat is parked for the duration of surface interval, when you can swim around and have fun, especially we mostly unzip the top half of the wetsuit down to waist so it could be more properly cleaned/flushed.

And, we drink lots and lots of water at the point it's colorless and practically odorless. At the end of the day the wetsuit can be rinsed thoroughly and washed with soap if you wish, to be worn again the next day, and of course, soak it in Dettol for couple of days after the trip.

Note: I doubt they do it for rental wetsuit though, so it's actually nastier to rent wetsuit than regulator.

It's for wetsuit though, it's never acceptable to pee in dry suit (used for lower temperature like winter and ice diving) it's basicaly dry and totally different thing.

To tell you a secret: sailors do that as well in their clothes, (I found it surprising as well but after just a day of excursions the need is understandable) I am talking about small boat sailing when basically everything is wet, and there are times when it's windless and you are just scattered in the open sea, but of course, in the ocean, not in the boat.

It's always in the ocean.

Err..Isn't cat's poop and pee smell the worst?

Eh.. we still in topic? :p

Hey, peeing in your clothes is way better than drowning. Seriously.  :(  A friend who sails told me that a lot of men fall overboard if a big wave comes along when they're trying to pee over the side of the boat, and they lose their balance. It seems fairly certain that's what happened when they find a body with the pants unzipped.

Compared to what, exactly?  :P  The advantage to kitten poop is that it's tiny (kinda cute, actually).  And it's only mature male cats (especially unneutered ones) that have the extra-smelly urine.

Hey I think I missed this one.

Oh wow. I never had to go to that extent and maybe I try not to. Normally my sailor friend would just find somewhere to land and the ocean is up for grab. But maybe because it's only a couple of hour sailing, it's still manageable to hold.

Anyway, I don't know if I have to make it clear. :p but I would. XD Peeing while scubadive is not easy at all, at least for me. I have stage fright and it's difficult somehow for me. Pressure, gravity, whatever, I don't know, it's more like technical problem, :D, but it happens all the time. Barbaric? Necessity, I call it. :)

We had some adopted cats, the situation was different back then. There were no vets, no pet shops, no internet, we stayed in remote place and our resources were limited. So when we kept cats, we just did what we had to do, fed them and took care of them. There were no canned food, proper cat food, etc, but we know cats like fish. So we fed them cooked fish, sometimes fish guts as well, they loved them and had nicest coat.

Those smart kitties potty trained themselves, we didn't have litter box as well, but they did it in the toilet, all we needed was to flush them which was great. However, we would know from far away if the cats did their business, because it smelled way more awful compared to the dog's, most probably because of the diet.

Carabas. if you're still here ... forgive them. It's been a long hiatus. :p

VBS: I suspect you're right, it was the fish. Our veterinarian does not recommend feeding fish to cats. She says it's a common allergen, possibly because it's not their natural diet (how would a cat catch a fish, considering how much they hate water?)

Carabas: I'm glad to see that you're still logging in, despite the nonsense. As Arcadia says, it's been a long hiatus -- but we really should admit that we're like this most of the time. (Please don't tell anybody.)

I've seen videos of cats catching fish. They may hate getting wet, but they hate going hungry more.

I've heard tuna's not so great for cats, because of the ... er, mercury, I think? Didn't know all fish was frowned on. That doesn't actually make sense to me, because cats don't catch cows, turkeys or chickens in the wild either.

Oh, and I just remembered ... my brother has to occasionally restock his goldfish pond, due to the neighborhood cats. (And also due, once, to a snapping turtle. Now THAT was exciting......)

I actually found some videos but had been scratching my head trying to remember how to upload it.

Beside other species of cats do catch fish occasionally, there is a species of cat called 'Fishing Cat' (second video), three quarter of their diet actually consists of fish. However. although the origin of house cats are not completely figured out, they are most likely come from different genus than those fishing cats though.

BUT, we didn't know this back then, I believe we knew it from some cartoon (that cats like fish :P) but can't remember which, because it's definitely not Tom and Jerry (it's a mouse) or Sylvester (it's Tweety bird) so yah.. I don't know. :P

As for fish, I once heard that big, huge fish like tuna or barracuda etc, when they reach certain size, they are dangerous even for human because of the risk of ciguatera poisoning, and I did heard about mercury too.

Geez.. this thread is so hijacked
