That's a first-rate Reaction Shot from RDJ.  You'd almost think that was a real punch.

The secret to these films is that RDJ and his 'Hotson' have the same kind of fraternal/best mates relationship for real as the characters they are playing.  They only met for the first time here, but just as when Dr. Watson strolled into the Barts lab on that fateful New Year's Day, 1881  . . the synchronicity was instantaneous between the two.  Being 21st century males instead of Victorian ones, the blokes can be that much more openly 'frat-bruthas forever!' with each other when they are goofing on set.  I am so looking forward to the third film if it ever gets made

You’re right Hikari, I won’t be going. Maybe one day I’ll go to one?

Just thought that I’d post this in case anyone’s interested. I don’t bother with downloaded stuff myself but this might be good.

Herl,

I just now got around to opening this.  Looks like an interesting Christmas-set Holmes mystery--opening with 'an assault in a Turkish bath'.

There's no way around it--'Turkish bath' has become synonymous with 'gay-cruising pick-up spot' in our 21st century.  Has a more poetic ring to it than 'steam room', but perhaps that poetry is part of the problem.

The Watson looks spot-on, though I can't say I find Nicholas Briggs possessing of a Holmesian face as such.  The profile is all wrong.

This article was published in May 2017 and is the latest update I can find on the alleged 3rd Sherlock Holmes film.

Asked for an update on the project, the producer revealed: “It’s closer to happening than it’s been for a while.

“With any luck we’ll be making it at the end of next year.

“I hope, we’ll see. Fingers crossed.”

Still sounds pretty iffy to me. I’m hopeful, but I’m not holding my breath.

2019 seems like a long way off, particularly if they are thinking "Christmas 2019" rather than, say, Memorial Day 2019.  That would make 8 years between films.

Watching clips of Kelly Reilly as Mary Morstan, I can't get over how very much she looks like a female version of Eddie Redmayne at times.  They could easily be siblings.  I wonder if this third movie will even include her.  When we last left the Watsons, they were preparing to go on their belated honeymoon . . but 8 years is at least twice as long as their marriage lasted before her untimely demise.  Opening with Watson grieving Mary would be very sad, but unfortunately, Watson has to lose a wife before he's free to resume the bromance at Baker Street.

With the passage of 8 years, they will have had to most likely replace 'Gladstone', the bulldog.

Can it really have been that long since Game of Shadows?  It does not feel that long.  While I manage my impatience for the threequel, I pass the time by watching old interview clips of RDJ and Jude Law on the Graham Norton show.  Those two are just exactly like a comfortably married couple in their joint appearances, finishing each others' sentences and all.

Wouldn’t argue with you on that point Hikari.

‘I sometimes wish that I could put the whole world on hold for a month so that I could catch up. Not only do I want to re-watch Sherlock and look for links to The Canon (and to enjoy of course) I also watch to watch the two movies again. I should be able to manage it by Christmas 2020 though👍

Robert just celebrated his 53rd birthday in April.  He was a pretty youth but I think he's far more interesting now.  The apex of Mr. Law's beauty was in The Talented Mr. Ripley in 1999, but he's still got that Hotson charisma.  RDJ is representing well for dudes in their 50s but that one is going to be a perennially young spirit.  Jude is 8 years younger, but probably light years more mature.  :)

And of course Jude Law appeared in women’s clothes in Shoscombe Old Place.

Reeally.  My goodness.  When was this?  Granada series?  Jude would have been, what, in middle school at the time?

A very callow Mr. Law also appears as the young lover of Oscar Wilde opposite Stephen Fry.  Very good casting, I daresay.  Jude in his 20s would have made a dedicated heterosexual man question his sexuality.  One who was already susceptible to beautiful young men would not have stood a chance.

However, like our Rupert G., another impossibly pretty youth, Jude has 5 children and is very good at football.  Truth.

Late teens, judging by his appearance.  Yes, Granada, AKA the Brett series.

Added:  Oh, wait, it sounds like you may have taken Herlock's "women's clothing" remark to mean Law's character was a homosexual. No idea about that, but the clothing was just a disguise, an attempt to fool people into thinking (from a distance) that he was someone else.

I own that box set, but I hadn't watched that episode yet because I hadn't read the story.  It is the very last one in the Canon.  I must hie with haste to that episode to see Jude in a dress.  Of course he would be very fetching in it.

Hikari and Carol,

The episode Shoscombe Old Place first appeared in 1991 so he would have been 19ish. As Hikari said it was the very last Holmes story that Doyle wrote. Law was dressed as a woman so that Robert Norburton could fool people into thinking that his sister was still alive.

Haven't seen the episode in question but I had not assumed that in particular.  Drag seems to be very popular in Britain, usually played for (low) humor, but even Sherlock Holmes favored it as a disguise.  I really didn't expect a mainstream popular British series from that era to feature an openly homosexual character, nor Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to have written such.  Jude did play the openly gay Lord Alfred Douglas, lover of the much older Oscar Wilde and son of the infamous Marquess of Queensbury.  I was just remarking upon Jude's quite remarkable beauty of that period.  He really put one in mind of those beautiful Italian young men of the Renaissance.  And recently, he played a young Pope--go figure!  :)

Slightly off topic but during the Ripper murders of 1888 Scotland Yard did put police officers on the streets dressed as prostitutes. Also some very brave women offered to go out on the streets as a lure for Jack. Sadly nothing worked and he reads never brought to justice.

I take it that none of the decoys were harmed, at least?

No they weren’t Carol👍 At the time there were no female police officers and so members of the public volunteered. It’s also quite amusing to think of how convincing police officers were in women’s clothing. When they were looking for volunteers I wonder if any ‘bobby’ slipped up and said “yes I’ll be ok I dress in women’s clothing all the time....oops.”

We just watched Shakespeare in Love, which features an imaginative version of how Romeo and Juliet might have come to be written and first performed.  Of course all the actors back then were men.  Those police officers would have fit right in (other than being a few hundred years too late).

I suppose that one advantage they would have had (and its a very sad one) is that the women would have looked much older than they actually were and much the worse for wear due to  poor diets, terrible living conditions, untreated illnesses, over use of rocket-fuel alcohol and regular beatings at the hands of vicious clients and pimps. None of them looked like Heather Graham in ‘From Hell’ or Barbara Windsor in ‘A Study In Terror.’

If you get chance Carol there was a recent UK comedy series about Shakespeare called Upstart Crow which I loved. It was written by Ben Elton and starred David Mitchell.👍

I can also recommend Stage Beauty with Billy Crudup, Claire Danes & Rupert Everett as Charles II.  As a Shakespearean scholar, I enjoyed Shakespeare in Love as a frothy entertainment, but I consider it vastly overrewarded, seeing as it stole both Best Picture and Best Actress away from Elizabeth and Cate Blanchett.  Stage Beauty is set 60 years later, and it's a cross-dressing thespian comedy, too, but it is superior to SiL, because it actually has substance.   Richard Eyre directed.

When I was in London I went a a Shakespeare and Dickens Walk with this guide. He was brilliant. Like many of the tour guides he’s also an actor.

The video is only a couple of minutes long.
