  1. Did anyone see this on channel 4 last night? It was absolutely fantastic! Very much in the tone of the original film (which is one of my favourites) and everyone in it is brilliant. I'm not an expert on Minnesota accents but as far as I could tell, Martin Freeman does a good job. He sounded like the others to these English ears. Billy Bob Thornton played his part in that quiet, slightly disturbing way he has about him. Yes he plays a creepy character a lot but he has a quiet charm about him that works really well for this kind of role. I've met him briefly in real life and he does come across as a pretty quiet guy. He was very friendly though and also quiet humble. His expression doesn't change much when he plays this kind of role, he talks very quietly and grabs all the focus from the other character so they're closely involved before they know it. He's very good at doing that detached kind of thing, where he could be talking about the weather or killing someone without changing tone at all. It's very disturbing and works really well for this role. I'm sounding like a Billy Bob fangirl now, which I guess I am. He's one of my favourite actors. So, if anyone hasn't seen this yet, I recommend it. If you like dark humour you'll love it. It's very funny. I just hope the rest of the series is as good as the first episode. It's one of the best first episodes I've ever seen and looks likely to be in my 'best TV of all time' list.
  2. Like some others here, I knew little of Sherlock Holmes before seeing this series. I mean I knew of the character, I knew he was a detective and I knew of the phrase 'No s**t Sherlock'. And of course, depsite knowing this little I recognise the deerstalker and pipe combo which I think everyone in the world does even if they've never read or seen any of the books or adaptations. I didn't really have any expectations not having read the books or seen much of other adaptations so I can't call whether or not I was convinced by a modern version. However, I'm always interested in updated versions of things, I think if a story is good and the themes are still relevant then anything can be updated. I've now read a couple of the books and I like how they've done this series, rather than doing a direct update of the stories, they've taken elements from them and written new stories about the characters using some detail from the original books. It's an interesting way of doing it, I guess it's just very good quality fan-fic. I started watching the Jeremy Brett version as it's being repeated on TV at the moment but I wasn't particularly grabbed by it. It's OK and Jeremy Brett is very good, but it's not really my thing. Same with the books. I enjoyed the couple I read but am not itching to read more. I'll probably get round to others some time but there's other stuff I find more interesting to read.
  3. This is difficult as I love all the episodes and some of them may change ranking, but right now I'd say. 9. Blind Banker (I find the circus scenes a bit boring, but that's the only thing) 8. Hounds of Baskerville (Only because there are fewer things going on. I may have the attention span of a gnat, I like the ones with different threads going on). 7. Scandal in Belgravia 6. His Last Vow 5. Sign of Three 4. The Empty Hearse 3. Study in Pink 2. The Great Game 1. The Reichenbach Fall Apart from BB & HoB at the bottom and TGG & TRF at the top, I find them difficult to rank so this list isn't my final answer. Some of the lowest probably have some favourite scenes in them and the worst of Sherlock episodes are better than most TV. Notice my 2 tops have lots of Moriarty. He's my favourite character I'm changing my mind already, I'm hitting 'post' before I drive myself mad!
  4. I've never watched it but I guess the name is a pun of sorts: Holmes / House. I'll put 'House' on my to watch list and check it out next. So many shows, so little time. I'm currently working my way through Dr. Who which will take a while, I'm still on David Tennant. I like to watch one thing at a time (apart from stuff that's currently onTV), I'm a bit OCD like that. Although I don't always see things through to the end, some series get binned after a few episodes. I've binned 'Elementary' already.
  5. T.o.b.y: I agree with you mostly, I may have come across as a bit harsh towards Molly, in truth I really like her a lot. I agree that she is more than a fangirl towards the end but I do think that her infatuation with Sherlock is still intact and that she'll have a hard time with other relationships because she sees him as the ideal. When I say she wants Sherlock only nicer etc. I didn't mean she wants him to be someone he's not, she loves him as he is. But for a romantic relationship, she'd need the added extras. She may love him as he is but of course she wants him to feel the same way about her, which he clearly doesn't. This is all I meant by my comment, not that she wants him to be someone he's not, but that ideally, he would have different feelings towards her. And in a relationship I don't think she'd be too happy if she's treated with indifference or insensitivity, which is why this is would be a terrible match. I can't see Sherlock being the most attentive of boyfriends. I love the way their friendship has developed and I agree with you about the 'What do you need?' scene. It's really shows her as a genuine friend to him and that she has more than just romantic feelings for him. I hope the writers keep to this line of their relationship because it's more interesting and beautiful than them getting off with each other. Baker Street Irregular: Or that Tom was only a physical stand-in for Sherlock and not even close to what she really wants. He came across as a bit of an idiot, which Molly wouldn't enjoy for long. I still think she has a type and unfortunately, that type isn't really a relationship kinda guy.
  6. I live in Maida Vale in the Westminster borough! How about you? I was born in Harrow, lived in Slough and Ruislip for a while. I have no memories of it though. I've only been back to London once since then, just overnight for a gig. I got lost :/
  7. I really can't see Sherlock in any sort of romantic relationship, it would ruin the whole show. That's not what 'Sherlock' is about. It's fine for the other characters to get into relationships as that's what 'normal' people do and it would be ridiculous to not include those events in the overall story. But Sherlock has to remain unattached to remain true to the character. I remember first seeing the episode when he's 'with' Janine, it was awful, for a split second I was despairing of where it was going but it was nicely done and the clue to it being not quite what it looked like was put in early on (the face change when he closed the door on her, classic!) so we knew all was OK. And it was nice to see that he can convincingly turn on the charm for his own ends. To have her convinced that they are actually in a relationship when nothing physical has occured and she doesn't know where he goes for nights on end is brilliant. His attraction to Irene is interesting and in character, but it could never go beyond that playful intrigue and be believable, for either of them. They both understand love, romance, sexual chemistry etc. and can use this understanding to get what they want. But this understanding and knowledge of the other's understanding wouldn't make for a very healthy relationship. It would be a constant battle and power games or they'd get bored very quickly. Some people just aren't made for romantic relationships and I don't think either of these two are. And finally, Molly. I know there are lots of people who want to see this happen, those people should be rounded up and shot! (a bit harsh?). But seriously this could never EVER happen. Molly is a sweet girl, she wants a nice relationship where they'll do 'normal' things like watch telly and go to the pub. She's an intelligent person and is attracted to Sherlock's mind which I really like about her, but she could never be comfortable in a relationship with someone like that, she's a tad too needy and gives too much. She wants Sherlock but nicer, Sherlock but infatuated with her they way she is with him. She's going to be single for a long time, poor girl. She's got this ideal in her head that no one is ever going to live up to because the two things she wants rarely come in the same package. If she wasn't a fictional character she'd be the ultimate Sherlock fangirl. I like how Sherlock has come to have real affection for Molly and see her as more than just the girl with the crush on him. But I see this affection as the same he has for John, Lestrade, Mrs Hudson and Mary. No romantic feelings, just respect and affection that they deserve because they're decent people who show him the same (yes, I do think Mary deserves it, sorry). This is what is so wonderful about his character, his love for people is based on what they really are and not affected by some romantic infatuation or any other nonsense that clouds the judgement. OK, I think I've waffled on for quite long enough but I will say this, I have no idea where the writers will go next series, I hope there will be no romantic involvement for Sherlock, but if there is it'll be interesting to see how they do it. It would take some really clever writing to make it convincing.
  8. Nope, I was born in London but moved away when I was 5 so I don't remember it. But I guess I am technically from there. Which part are you from?
  9. If your Santa Anas feel like a hundred hairdryers blowing when you go outside, then yes, that's like here during a calima.
  10. Hot! Well most of the time. Right now it's warm through the day but a bit chilly at night, that usually lasts from late December to mid February and we can get some rain (sometimes torrential). The rest of the year it's pretty hot and in July - September it's ridiculously hot. We get a few 'calimas' a year too which is a heatwave / duststorm blowing over from Africa. They only last a few days but they're awful. Everything you touch is warm, the water from the cold tap comes out warm and there's just no cooling down, it's horrible. When that happens I wonder why the hell I moved here, but it passes and the rest of the time it's really nice, if you like sunshine We get very little rain apart from occasional storms so there's not much greenery apart from cacti and aloe vera. The lanscape is very brown / orange. The island is basically just a volcano poking out of the sea.
  11. Google. I had no one in my real life who understood my excitment at the new series coming out, I suffered eye-rolling, despairing looks and even requests of 'Oh do shut up!' It was horrible. I had to find some like-minded people and I found this place Note: I have since converted the family by means of prolonged exposure therapy (forced) and they're now hooked. My mum has even gotten over a severe bout of 'Benedict face aversion' and can watch it without making any utterences of 'ugly' 'funny looking' or 'smackable face'. Result!!
  12. Well I've always had a thing (just one more thing ) for Columbo, I like the format of it as it's different from most detective stuff. You see who dunnit at the beginning so the story is about how he figures it out and you're not distracted by trying to figure it out yourself. I know some people don't like this and like to play along figuring it out, personally I like it. And I love the character, he's just so cool. I also have a soft spot for 'Scott & Bailey' because it's set and filmed in my hometown (Oldham near Manchester). Lesley Sharp is one of my favourite TV actresses, oh and of course, it has Rupert Graves in it too who I have had a major crush on since seeing him in 'Damage' many many years ago. Finally, not a detective himself but it has detectives in it so I'm guessing it counts: 'Cracker'. This is probably my favourite crime show of all time, Robbie Coltrane is brilliant as a hard drinking, gambling, forensic psychologist. He plays a very flawed clever bloke which is always good TV. This is also set in Manchester. Perhaps I'm biased
  13. I've just watched this, it really is very good. It's extremely sad but a joy to watch, Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy both do a fantastic job of portraying these characters and have wonderful chemistry between them. You really believe that these two vastly different people have real love and respect for each other. Benedict is subtle and charming (I can only describe what I love about him as 'close-up acting', the way he expresses slight shifts in emotion and attitude in his face without overdoing it). Tom is brilliant as the psychotic alcoholic, he plays likeable and funny as well as disturbing and, in parts, totally repellant, both in a completely believable way. It would have been easy to make this character a bit over the top, but he played it perfectly. The story itself is harrowing but lifted by the relationship bewtween the two characters. And there are some genuinely funny bits too. Defintely watch it if you haven't already, it's wonderful.
  14. Well I'm originally from London but was brought up mostly in Manchester so I class myself as a Mancunian. I now live in Lanzarote, Canary Islands. For anyone who doesn't know it, it's a tiny Spanish island just off the coast of Morroco in North Africa. It's a popular holiday destination for Europeans, particularly British, Irish and German but we have people from everywhere here, it's a real mix of people which is nice.
  15. So there is, Silly me . I go straight to 'new content' so I missed that. Ignore me.
