One of my friends in uni had his car nicked for times over a period of a few weeks, and once they left the screwdriver in the car and broke back in the next night to get it back. Stupid thing is it was a shitty car on a student street, there was nothing in there of any value.

Waiting for it to be the right time to go out is really awkward. 😒

No no, I'm not offended, if anything this is more like a historical/anthropological discussion. What bothers me and makes me edgy is where it might lead. But I'm off the emails now so feel free to carry on!

I suppose that is exactly what makes me uneasy, I'm always on guard waiting for it to cross into 'Sunday school' territory. I'll just unsubscribe from this thread for a while so I'm not getting the emails.

It began more about legality, yes. Then it skewed into 'sinner' territory.

Not all of them do no because you can't swap thread mid-conversation, but when people want to get in depth that's the place. And yes, the gay wedding cake discussion was also the one that ended up being about religion and various people's beliefs, which I did my best to stay out of but still springs to mind more than I would like.

I just think there should be a religion thread where the religious discussions live, like the political thread. However I don't want my name on it so I don't want to start it. If Christmas movies got moved to their own thread surely religion should also have it's own thread?

For the apple example wouldn't you just divide 5.85 by 12 and then times it by 17? Assuming there's a 100 cents in a dollar like there is pennies in a pound? Why would you work out how much two apples cost? 😩 EDIT: Oh I see now, that's your example of tweaking the numbers. Omg, this is like one of those problems where it should be sensible but I see something like 'if one train leaves a station at 8, and another leaves the station and 4, and 12 women get on a fifth train with two florists amongst them then how much did the potatoes cost in Paddington?'

No, it's all more complicated than that, or at least seems it. (Though the apples also confused me.) I'm sure there's something obvious I'm missing. It's about converting the atomic weight of carbon into the atomic weight of carbon dioxide. If you are converting one way one weight goes on top, if your converting the other way the other weight goes on top - but I don't really get why one needs to be divided by the other at all. I think I'll look at it with fresh eyes tomorrow evening, and see if it makes more sense then. Possibly it's one of those formulas you just have to know and just try to keep in mind exactly what you're converting to what. I might print it out and stick it on my wall.

I was right, the next section of my textbook was all about using fractions to work out atomic weights. 😵 I get confused which number goes on the top and which number goes on the bottom and why. I managed to get the right results by tweaking the examples provided but if I had to do it from scratch I'm pretty sure I'd get it the wrong way around and mess it up.

Our clocks went back last night, and even though it is only an hours difference it feels so late this evening, it's not even 9 but it feels more like 12. But then I feel really rough so perhaps that's something to do with it.

Yup, I like barren remote places, I like anywhere where the scenery is amazing and I can be outdoors.That would be a fantastic Christmas, I eventually want to go into marine conservation so whales and dolphins are really 'my thing.' I read that some of the great whales also get seen from the coast, according to the Shetland Facebook page they recently saw four humpbacks. 😮 Ah ha! I'm in Swansea, so not too far. Have we had this conversation before... I don't know. Maybe? But if so I don't remember.
