I watched Jeremy Brett when he portrayed Sherlock Holmes in the 70's and thought he was a brilliant actor in the part and like others, think Benedict Cumberbatch drags Holmes into the 21st Century so brilliantly. :applause: :brit:

Hi aspvl and welcome to the forum!

I concur with Fox - that looked like talcum to me, too.

Could be a talcum powder to help dry them. A lot of people used to use it as a drying agent after taking a bath.

Yes, it may be talcum powder... but it doesn't seem white

Anyway, thank you!

Talcum doesn't have to be white especially if it isn't super fine. In Victorian times it may not have been so overly processed.

Hello, aspvl -- welcome to Sherlock Forum!  :welcome:

According to Wikipedia, talc in its natural state is "light to dark green, brown, white, grey."  But that's in a solid lump, and I tend to doubt that the powdered form would exhibit as much color.  On the other hand, what Holmes was using could have been dyed to blend with skin tones.  I don't know whether that sort of thing is available these days, but I do remember an "Our Gang" comedy (AKA "The Little Rascals" in the US) dating from the 30's, where a kid was changing his baby sibling's diaper and using "flesh colored" talcum powder (with the joke being that things typically sold as "flesh colored" are sort of beige, but this was a black family, so the powder was dark) -- so, comedy not withstanding, maybe "flesh colored" talcum powder really was available in Holmes's day.

Hello again!  :)

Another question that many people seem to have is what Jeremy Brett wears in the Granada series.

Besides the waistcoat, shirt and bowtie underneath the collar, what else does he use? Frock coat?

And what about those long long grey coats? What are they called?  :sherlock:

A frock coat, an long black cape coat with a long black scarf. The grey overcoat is sometimes referred to as a "duster" here in the states, not sure the British equivalent.

I wasn't alive in the 70s but yes. I love both as well. Lots of people seem to think they have to take sides, though, for some reason.

You can't take sides - Jeremy Brett acted 'Sherlock Holmes' in the Victorian era and Benedict does a completely modern take - and both are brilliant.

Watching Jeremy Brett is what started me off on Sherlock Holmes! :D

I have the entire DVD boxset - it's the brown colored one that looks like a book with two "books" inside it. :)

It was the other way round for me. Reading Sherlock Holmes, made me start watching Jeremy Brett!

That boxset sounds gorgeous!

Darn!  We've got the one with just the profile.  It'd be nicer to have one of those nice photos.

Which episode is a 15? I've watched them all but none of them seem like a 15.

Sorry, but I don't understand your question.
