Sure, I think that's legit.

Was it just me or was the applause for TIG when they announced the nominations rather subdued?

It was subdued especially in comparison to Pride.  The clips I saw for Pride during the awards never really made the film appealing to me.  While I still wait as patiently as possible for TIG to come toa theater near me.

A neat little interview with the costume designer. This is one of my favorite articles on this movie so far. http://carpetbagger.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/12/17/clothes-and-character-benedict-cumberbatch-in-the-imitation-game/?_r=0

I liked that article.  It is a side of movies most people don't think about.

Can I be sad that the closest the movie appears to be coming is Cedar Rapids, IA (About 5 hours away)?  I realize that Minnesota screwed itself up several years ago when it came to taxes and the movie industry, but this is ridiculous.  I live in a larger market than Cedar Rapids.

Well, damn -- I used to live in Cedar Rapids.  Why did I ever leave?!  ;)

Still hoping the movie will hit Indianapolis, though.

You met a guy you thought was (is) cute/handsome (whatever other term you would use to describe your husband) and maybe something to do with a job offer out that way or whatever other life circumstance.  There are several options as to why we do odd things like that.

How did you know?  It was actually most of the above (though this was pre-Alex).

But hey, I finally got the AMC site to work with me, and lo and behold, the movie is coming to one of their theaters in Indianapolis (on our side of town, yet!) as well as one in Bloomington -- starting on Friday the 26th.

Will have to double check to see if AMC will bring it to one of its 6 theaters here.

Finally! It will be debuting at the AMC near me as well on Christmas day -- along with about 20 other flashier movies that will probably blow it out of the water, attendance-wise. It's already left the "artsy" theaters that were showing it last week. I really don't understand their release strategy. Oh well, they're the experts.....

It's supposedly helps create oscar buzz for best picture & the likes so it has a better chance of a win.

You'd think it would be more important to get more people to go see it .... oh well.

An oscar win gets your otherwise unknown name out so that you can get more & better funding for movies that will appeal to an even larger audience.

I might get to see the movie just over an hour away from me, but not sure what day yet. So there's some hope.

Yeah, but big profits at the box office gets you even more! Look how many Fast and Furious (!!!) movies have been made....

Just a guess, but maybe they aren't actually trying for an Oscar?  ;)

I finally got to see it tonight.

What did you think of it?

Fast and Furious, I assume you mean, and my point exactly ... they're going for the largest audience possible, Oscars be damned, and it's worked so well they've been able to make 7 of those things so far (!) Why wouldn't any studio want that kind of success? Why bury your movie (TIG, e.g.) under a flood of other releases? 'Tis a puzzlement, but presumably they know what they're doing.....  I hope I'm wrong, but I predict TIG will disappear from the multplexes in a week or two, with most people never knowing it was even there. Of course, that may be true no matter when it's released...... it's not exactly a bombastic special effects blockbuster, is it?

*sigh*  A few decades ago who woulda thunk that The Hobbit would ever be turned into a bombastic special effects blockbuster?

My guess is that the people behind TIG are intentionally going for artistic recognition over immediate cash rewards. For example, the film has been in a TON of film festivals (including one in Indianapolis, though I didn't know about that till afterward).

A few decades ago they said LOTR and the Hobbit were unfilmable. I remember when Empire Strikes Back came out, and one reviewer said "finally, the technology to film LOTR is here". But it took another 30 years to make it happen. (And when the first "Hobbit" came out, some nit of a reviewer said it looked old hat!)

Apparently that nit wasn't paying attention.  As just one example, the Hobbit motion-capture techniques are visibly a huge improvement over what they did in LotR.  And I believe Jackson says they've made huge strides in their epic-battle technology as well (please wake me when it's over).

But yes, state of the art has really galloped along during the past few decades.  It's hard to believe now that the original Star Trek series was mind-boggling in its day.

Will be watching TIG in 2 hrs :)

Saw the movie, loved it.  Many Sherlock style jokes/insults in there (the heady intellectual kind that would come from Sherlock's own mouth).  Thought it was well done and touching.

Finally saw Imitation Game with a bunch of friends. I think the critics have been pretty accurate; it's a well-told, satisfying story, but probably not, alas, an Oscar winner, as the Oscars tend to favor movies which are more politically confrontational and/or flamboyant. But I think BC's got a good shot, he was sterling as usual. And judging from remarks we overheard leaving the theater, the audience loved it.
