"Silk House".

If I remember correctly, it's by Antony Horowitz.

It captures Doyle's style and atmosphere. The content may be disturbing.

I really enjoyed The Beekeeper's Apprentice, in which Holmes has retired to Sussex to raise bees, but begins solving cases again when he meets a bright teenage girl named Mary Russell (who becomes his "new Watson," since the original still lives in London).

I'm not familiar with that one.

It's the first (and perhaps the best) in a series of Holmes-and-Russell novels.  My biggest complaint is that Watson is pleasant but weak, more along the lines of Nigel Bruce's character -- but this is actually a minor complaint, since the good doctor doesn't have much "screen time" in the novel.

You can read more about the book here.

ok I will try The Beekeeper's Apprentice first.....it seems interesting.... I don't know why but I have read young sherlock holmes by andrew lane but It was more like adventure than mystery. It was like ordinary book. So I thought it was better to ask. Thank you to all......... By the way I really liked agatha christie novels..... especially And Then there were none..... It is very famous so perhaps you have read it if not then you should read it..... Awesome.... Truly......

Then There Were None is one of those books that I've heard of all my life but have never read.  I believe the original title was Ten Little Indians, which is how I first heard of it.  (That was taken from an old children's song about Native Americans, by the way -- nothing to do with India!)

"And then there were none" is perfectly chilling, if you ask me. That book gave me nightmares for weeks!

In this story, there were 10 people on the Island. not one more and not one less.. that is sure. And someone is killing them one by one according to that poem. And the biggest twist is even after all the 10 people died, we still have not a single clue who was the killer. (yaa... last women  did kill herself and she was not killer.)  And of course the last 10 -15 pages explains everything...... starting of the novel is a bit difficult because all 10 people have different background and it is bit hard to remember them all but after a few chapter one can not stop reading till the end................. By the way the book is best seller by true means.... according to wiki it is at number 4 and at the top in detective and mystery. (100 millions copies....... more than any single harry potter book.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_books

Hi Parv!

I remember I really liked that book, I'll have to read it again now!

Hi Parv!

I don't really read a lot of mysteries, but I think my favorite mystery writer was Dick Francis. His best books were Whip Hand, and Reflex and some of the others written about the same time. The first one I read was In the Frame, I loved it because I love both painting and horses.

I read some Agatha Christie when I was younger and enjoyed those. And Josephine Tey's Daughter of Time is great!

I'm a HUGE Lord of the Rings geek but I don't think that counts as a mystery. :D

I have just started reading mystery novels. like (2-3) years.... I haven't read any lord of the rings but of course i have seen all 3 movies and first part of Hobbit. I have to say Movies are Epic....... Is it worth to read novel after seeing the movie??? In past i have tried but failed to keep interest..... Any way I am a huge fan of jules verne. I have read many of his novel's translation. I also like science-fiction. Ender's game(novel) is too good.

It can be very interesting to read a novel after you've already seen the movie.  Just don't expect them to be the same, because the movie people always change things.  For one thing, you can't fit an entire novel into one movie.  And for another thing, a movie needs to be more visual.  And perhaps most important, the people making the movie want it to be their creation.

The Lord of the Rings is really long, usually published as three books, and the movies are fairly similar to the books.  The Hobbit is just one small book, so they've added a lot to make three movies out of it.  Since The Hobbit happens first (and LotR is a sequel), you might want to read The Hobbit first.  Just don't expect Legolas to be in it!  (They borrowed him from LotR.)

I agree, I'd start with the Hobbit and see if you like it. It's a lot funnier and a lot lighter in tone than Lord of the Rings. It's almost a children's book, really. But a good one.

There is difference between reading a novel and seeing a movie... Both have their own specialty..... Book(text form) gives reader a vast opportunity to create a new world according to reader's mind. Reader imagine writer's world according to his ability and his imagination... of course words help but after all it is upto reader to decide how they see it. It is the charm of reading novels and story. otherwise after tv, computer and movies noone would read novels or stories.

But movie has its own different charm... In movie, we see imagination of director of the movie or more precisely we see director's interpretation of the movie. However this is still awesome because it would be closer to how writer see it....

The problem with me is when I have seen movie before when i read them i can only imagine things according to movie. It fills like my imagination is bounded.....

So, I had gave up to read novel whose movies i have seen earlier.....

But I will defiantly give it a another chance in near future................

By the way I have completed 2 chapter in The Beekeeper's Apprentice . Very interesting.... writer didn't just copy but add her own ingredients... Just sort of book i was looking for....... :-)

Glad to hear that you're enjoying Beekeeper!

And I agree that it's hard to shift media.  I often have just as much trouble (though of a different sort) when seeing a movie made from a book that I've already read.  (E.g., I often like my casting better.)
