I think it was when they made the switch from John's p.o.v. to Sherlock's p.o.v. in Season 3 that I realized how much more I identify with Sherlock than with John. I wonder if they'll switch back? I'm not sure how well that would work, to put Sherlock at a distance again. Although I think some people prefer it that way; more ACD-ish.

OK, that may be part of the reason that S3 feels so -- odd -- to me. I still identify more with John, and he's kinda left out in the cold during much of the series. Presumably the Victorian Special will be more Watson-centric, and after that, we'll just have to wait (and wait!) and see.  Maybe they can do John's p.o.v. without distancing Sherlock -- seems like Conan Doyle managed pretty well.

Well, they could do both p.o.v.'s, I think. They need to do something; I agree that John receded too much in S3.

You know what's funny? I actually had the opportunity to meet people who resemble some aspects of both Sherlock and Mycroft.

In the high school I've had a classmate who IMO was quite mycroftian. Intelligent, but not a show-off (like me), so sometimes overlooked. Good at manipulating people and with clear "living in a world of goldfish" attitude. Not looking particularly frightening, but he could give you a look you felt in your stomach. Machiavelli fan. Had an incredible talent to get what he wanted and climb up hierarchies. We were quite good friends and I was proud of it, even if I often felt inferior around him. Was great source of good books, which were quite rare in Poland in the 80ties. Sadly, we lost contact after I emigrated, the last thing I've heard about him from another ex-schoolmate was that he's a quite big animal in the criminal investigation department... It wouldn't surprise me if he'd get a job in intelligence service. :D

This might be actually the reason I like Mycroft or think I could get along with him. Dangerous, I know.

The Sherlock-ey one was an IT guy supervising our Macs back in the times they were something very exotic in the IT world. Anyway, this one looked nothing like Sherlock - more like a very desolate version of Peter Jackson. Based on his looks you wouldn't let him to look after your electric toothbrush, not to mention your computers, but he was damn good. His social skills were not. He wasn't as flamboyant as Sherlock but he was also not willing to lower his level to yours, which made normal communication almost impossible. Made you feel dumb and patronized. So if a contact with Sherlock was anything like contact with this individual, I don't wonder that he heard "piss off" very often.

Mycroft's enigma - what would you find if you was able to get through this ice armor?

That's an interesting question. I think Mycroft cares too much, more than Sherlock even. But he's too good at concealing it. Both brothers are. But beneath that calm and collected exterior, I think he's just a normal person who is filled with insecurities of his own. I think deep down he's always concerned for Sherlock. Even when he is taking a dig at Sherlock, it's his way of expressing his concern for him. Mycroft never lets anyone see him with his vulnerabilities, because he knows you can always get hurt. Mycroft reminds me of a coconut. Hard on the outside, soft on the inside.

That is a good question, how did I not notice it before?

Hm. I think Mycroft is pretty tough material all the way through; Sherlock's loss might break his heart but I'll bet it would be difficult to tell. What I really wonder is how much sheer nerve he has; my guess is he's pretty much steel, but I'd love to see him scream like a child over some silly threat and Sherlock getting a chance to gloat over him for it. :p

Anyway, I suspect Mycroft is pretty much the passionless calculating machine that Sherlock claims to be but isn't.

Something about my own character I wrote looong time ago: "Does he have any frailties? Sure he has, but God have mercy with the poor sod who finds one of them." Mycroft may be a normal human being but he would rather kill you than admit it. :P

I'm sure that's what Mycroft tells himself he is.  <_<

Or, he know his own weaknesses but for the sake of controlling what other people see, the only thing that get shown outside is either something that he know how to manage or a simulated ones (think Sherlock with his drug addiction to bait CAM). He might as well as having four different faces; for public/job, for social/general acquaintances, for friends/close ones and the real one that only he knew about.

Close friends?  What close friends?  I doubt that he'd admit to having any.

And I wouldn't be surprised if he had two or three different faces just for being alone with himself.

Mycroft is such a sketchy character, we never know how he really function inside (too bad, he's much more interesting and relatable than Sherlock).

Did you mean his version of the skull? He probably prowl the web anonymously (or as close as possible to it) and destressing by talking with other people that way. Hey, maybe Mofftiss really read this forum all these times! :O

Did you mean his version of the skull?

No, more like different versions of himself -- such as his "Mycroft reading secret documents" face and his "Mycroft allowing himself to eat triple-chocolate ice cream because no one is here to see him" face.

You mean the involuntary slide into working mode or whatever from certain trigger. It is a possibility for everyone who compartmentalized themselves (who doesn't? babies doesn't count).

Interesting thing how Mycroft has become quite central to a question of which character "turns you on" the most and the majority of votes were for Sherlock ^_^

However, the whole sweet tooth thing and worrying about his younger brother constantly and all that tooth-rotting fluff/melodrama? lies squarely on the shoulders of Mr Moffat, who introduced the concepts in SiP, thereby forcing Mr Gatiss to play along in this little parlour game of theirs (PlaidAdder, you rock: "I wouldn't believe that man (Mr Moffat) if he told me water was wet." )

Both brothers are quite manipulative in their own ways, but I love the chance Sherlock gets to throw back at his brother what he has been on the receiving end of for so long: "Piss off, Mycroft"!

o_O What sweet tooth? That's a fan-based joke.

No, in SiP, tea black, two sugars, to Molly. Dr Watson takes none in his, HOB.

"Dear brother, how's the died failing" in TGG, root canal work because the tooth is so rotten it needs special attention in same, probably because sucrose or dextrose play such a large part in his diet.

"You're out of breath. Why are you out of breath?"..."Either I have caught you in a compromising position ( wonder of what kind) or you have been working out again. Favour the latter." SoT, and those are just off the top of my head, I'm certain if I went looking for more clues in the series, I could come up with some more. Perhaps those quizzes of yours are worth something after all, dear Shadow Dweller (nice profile change, by the way).

That's a subjective interpretation, Inge. Tooth-damage that need a root canal can come from several different reasons and sugar is hardly the most destructive cause for enamel damage out there.

Don't take Sherlock's puerile brand of humour seriously, that's part and parcel of the man-child who still need to learn a lot about what it means to be a functional adult in today's world.

What profile change? It is already that way for months by now.

Behind a glass wall is certainly a good way to keep them from collecting dirt. It would be quite a pain to keep them clean and shiny everyday, with fans who might want to touch them.

That is very very true. I'd go so far as saying that this statement defines him. I swear to god these Holmes brothers are a complex species to analyze and talk about. There's so much we can say about them, but at the end we are left with more questions than answers about these two, in particular Mycroft.

I am the one person to give CAM a vote! It was between him and Mycroft, but he has such a lovely speaking voice I can forgive the clammy hands I think!

Wait until he runs them over you ... ewww! :D

Welcome to the forum, Lemon, glad to have you aboard. :welcome;

I take it that's your "innocent" face?   ;)   'Cause I just noticed the change three or four days ago:

Shadow, that's a neat new avatar picture -- but I didn't recognize you!  ;)

The content of my profile had stayed like that for months but the avatar image is new. That one remind me to one of the dogs here despite they came from entirely different species. When I get to laptop next, I will post her picture for all to see. =^.^=

Oh, OK, you really were puzzled, then.  I think Inge was commenting on your new avatar picture and called it your profile, presumably because it's located on your profile page.

I see... is that means you tends to think in complete pictures, Inge?
