I love that whole movie (and I like the stage play even better).  For one thing, it lives up to its songs.  So many classic musicals (e.g., South Pacific and Oklahoma) have wonderful happy and romantic songs but somewhat depressing plots.  The Music Man is mildly humorous throughout, give or take a few suspenseful moments, and I find the ending very satisfactory.

For some reason I just have never cared for the story, or the characters.  But I'll give it that, it is humorous.

I saw it live once, it was great. Better than the movie, even thought it was an amateur cast. (But boy could they sing.) I find that's often true with musicals. "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" is another one that's a little "meh" on film, but great live.

I think one musical that is really magical on film, though, is West Side Story. Looooove that movie, even if it is sad.

I've always loved "The Music Man" . Very catchy tunes and Robert Preston does an amazing job. But then, I'm a big fan of most musicals.

I've seen The Music Man on stage twice, once the Broadway touring company with Forrest Tucker as Professor Hill, and once an amateur company in a church fellowship hall.  They were both really good.  In fact I thought Tucker made a better Hill than Robert Preston (but then I didn't see the movie till later, so it's kinda hard to compare).

One thing I like about the stage version is the way certain scenes require us to use our imaginations -- like on the train at the beginning, where the actors provide the train's "special effects" by jiggling a bit in their seats, and the "sound effects" with the rhythm of their patter song.  (The movie has a real train, which isn't nearly as much fun.)

Now that you mention your song, it seems odd that we didn't have anything similar.  We did have an alphabet song, but the only thing I recall regarding months was "Thirty days hath September, April, June, and November.  All the rest have thirty-one, except February, which [something or other]."  I currently have no idea how the February part actually went.  But it's probably easier to just count on your knuckles (and if you don't know what I mean, please ask, and I'll explain).

Ah, gotcha -- thanks!  I think most of us are pretty good at "auto-correcting" posts as we read them, so I hadn't even noticed.  For future typos, you might want to consider just editing the original post.  Most people won't have read it yet anyhow.
