There's someone on livejournal who has done BBC Sherlock related verse in the styles of various people. This is Carroll's Great Game there are some definitions and commentary of the words used on the journal. The shallog spell when boredom looms ’Snot lessened by dull dimpid coves. Beheaded subject in the nooms Inadequately shroves. "But now a case commences, John! With bombs affixed to victims snatched! Ingenious puzzles just for me!" The frumious Cumberbatch. I take my Strad in hand to rile The lardmin who inchuffles cake, Dismissively rebuff in style; I’ve glebious plans to make. While addabatly stopping crimes, I disregard extraneous grief; Ferriatant Jim with clubber’s eyes Commands my thoughts in chief. Misunderstanding, John departs While Jim skurdankles at the pool. He’s kidnapped John! He’ll shoot us both! I look to John and— If you like that, you might want to look up Tennyson's Study in Pink and Lear's Blind Banker

She doesn't sound like she's got any particularly strong accent to me, but then I do have dodgy ears. Una Stubbs comes from Leicestershire so she could well have a non-Brummie midlands accent underpinning everything. Even though Lestrade I think is supposed to have an Estuary accent, RG's West Country vowels occasionally slip out (listen to the way he says pager in The Great Game, that er is so typical) so I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same for Una Stubbs and Mrs Hudson.

Next in the series: The Themes and Conflicts of John Watson By conflicts she's not meaning physical conflicts as such, but the mental conflicts that have potentially influenced John's life and career choices. It's interesting stuff.

You can get some great colours in gel pens. I have to use black ink for everyday writing in work, though I have a 4 colour biro for highlighting bits on my handover that need to stand out in order to remind me of stuff - current 4 colour biro has purple, pink, turquoise and lime green ink. I'd write in purple in work if we were allowed, but we're not, so I save the purple for fun stuff.
-
Maybe... which means I should probably worry as if I'm physically writing (as opposed to writing using the computer) for fun, I write in purple!

I have pens like that, plus proper quill pens, that I use with oak gall ink and handmade paper. I also have a seal and various colours of wax. Sometimes I just like writing retro... The quality of the paper makes so much difference.
-
If it's a biro/ballpoint/rollerball the pen is generally just 'a pen' as ink pen tends to specify one which used liquid ink as Tim said. We were encouraged to use ink pens in school but the quality of the paper in work is so poor that I have to use a biro in work as the ink from my cartridge pen just sinks through the page.

One of my friends on Livejournal is a psychologist and is writing meta on the characters from an emotional point of view. This time, it is the turn of John. She discusses whether or not he has PTSD, with evidence taken from onscreen to back up her opinions and explains why she feels that John was suffering from depression at the beginning of the series in ASiP. They are well thought out pieces of meta and well worth a read. John Watson and PTSD John Watson, Depression and Somatisation

Please do. If the adaptation lives up to everything it could be, it will be marvellous - and that's even without Benedict!- 23 replies

What age are Sherlock Holmes and John Watson?
aely replied to Carol the Dabbler's topic in General Sherlock Holmes Discussion
We're still treating people with digitalis and other really dangerous stuff... OK, so it's not digitalis as the Victorians would have known it, but digoxin is a very useful drug in cardiology - and will still kill you if not given appropriately. -
I don't watch now, but you know I was a fan.

Outdoor Pics from The Crew
aely replied to Carol the Dabbler's topic in Series 3 Locations. [Possible Spoilers]
I think the phone box is the one by Barts, right near where Sherlock fell, that is sometimes implicated in Reichenbach theory. This pics are from google maps - - -
There's also Guy Chambers (who wrote a lot of stuff for Robbie Williams and is English) and Guy Berryman of Coldplay (who is Scottish). I can't recall coming across that many 'Guys' in my life - I've known more Benedicts and Dominics than Guys, but that's probably as I was brought up RC.

Dol Guldur is in the southwestern part of Mirkwood, on the Western edge across the Anduin from Lothlórien. Radagast was friends with the Eagles so presumably they helped with transportation over the Misty Mountains as I don't think even the bunny sled would have managed to get him round the mountains as fast as he'd need to. North would be a nono as it was the domain of the Witch King of Angmar. This would leave the South, going through the Gap of Rohan and past Isengard. Then he'd have to trek all the way back to near Rivendell. So yeah, Eagle helicopters it is.

S3 Set Construction and Props
aely replied to Carol the Dabbler's topic in Series 3 Locations. [Possible Spoilers]
I just click and drag on the picture. It's entirely possible that you might need to update your software before it works, unless it is a regional thing. Someone a bit more tech savvy than me will know that (Undead Medic? Banshee?). It works fine for me. -
Playing Devil's Advocate here, or throwing the cat among the pigeons... There is also the possibility that the Elementary person responsible for "I believe in Sherlock Holmes" was not aware of the whole fandom "I believe in Sherlock Holmes" thing or BBC John Watson's blog. Potentially, they could be making a statement about their own version of Holmes - this episode was commissioned after they'd been give the go ahead for a whole season - and they are standing behind him so in effect it becomes the writers/producers saying "we believe in this version of Sherlock Holmes" if you like. Personally, I think that's a bit of a reach, and I am more likely to believe in the unmitigated gall aspect, but it has to be stated as a possibility.

I used to play "war" with the boys when I was about 7 - they'd run around shooting each other with imaginary guns and I'd run around after them patching them up so they could carry on. Yup, even back then I was a nurse... It sounds really non-PC now, but that's what kids played, like cowboys and Indians. *shrugs* life was different back in the 70s.

I think John and Greg would work really well together, and become good friends. I really want more of Lestrade, I think he's such a good foil for the other two. If you were that way inclined you could believe that Greg and John would become more than friends.
-
Moved the two posts on BAMF BBC John and Greg Lestrade to What Would you like to see in Series 3 - more appropriate for them than an Elementary thread.

Couldn't agree more! As The Doctor has said "There's no point in being grown up if you can't be childish sometimes" and "Anybody remotely interesting is mad, in some way or another" so I'm quite happy to be madly fanatical - it's OK, The Doctor said so!
