I just watched the last 2 episodes and it struck me as amusing that I mentioned Kill Bill on this thread, and then they go and give Joan's brother essentially the same name Lucy's character had in Kill Bill.

Bristol is also a West Coast port, so maybe we can blame the Irish for that too...

While bimbling around on the sky site to try to find out when they were going to pick up the rest of Elementary, I discovered that there has been a Spotify playlist made of the music used in the series (link takes you to the sky page). Spotify Playlist

Firefly is a perfect example of this - they only made 14 episodes and it was cancelled after 11 had been aired. Dresden Files was also cancelled after only 12 episodes, but that first series was planned at only being that length. The first series of Castle was also only 10 episodes, but each subsequent series has had 23/24 episodes. Wiki has this to say about Elementary...

I'd rather see a punch than have John fainting as happens in ACD canon. It's something I always have trouble getting my head round - why would a doctor end up fainting? Especially one who had been in the army and who will have seen some pretty horrible things. I think this is even more true for OUR John. Startled - yes; to the point of needing to sit down even, but I don't think he'd go spark out. TBH if there was a punch, I'd want it followed up by a hug.

I would be surprised if you had heard "blue arsed fly" as it is apparently a north western English thing. I hadn't realised this until I noticed a few of our southern and eastern doctors look puzzled when they heard the expression (we use it quite a lot in Liverpool) and when I got round to asking them they said they'd not heard it before coming up to our part of the country. As for 'Not a sausage' Urban Dictionary has this to say... We also use 'baldy' to say similar stuff - "Not a baldy clue", "not a baldy thing" which is apparently Irish in origin (not surprising in Liverpool) and it isn't just substituted for 'bloody' as you will also hear "not a bloody, baldy thing" I have no idea how widespread it is.

Believe in Sherlock Holmes & Stand with John Watson

I've had my SOPHIE band for years, wear it all the time when I'm not in work and that hasn't faded, so I live in hope that this one won't either. http://www.illamasqua.com/shop/products/sophie/sophie-wrist-bands -
Exactly. I'd love to see them working (and living?) more closely together. I think John might be resentful of Greg at first, but he's not blind (neither of them are) and I bet they'd gravitate toward each other just to discuss odd things each has noticed without being able to explain to anyone else or involve anyone they'd rather not (like Mycroft).

wiki says this about shoes on the table... As for the Scottish Play, I think it is just saying the name outside of the play itself. -

Christmas was nice - went to my mums in Cumbria. Watched Doctor Who on Boxing Day and then came home. New Year will be a non-event as I am working night shifts. You can't have both Christmas and New Year off in the NHS (though you can be working both, as I was last year) and I was lucky to have Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day off.

Are the terms "Geek" and "Nerd" still derogatory?

Torchwood fan? Definitely more of a Geek than a Dork. -
Portmanteau 'Ship Names: a good thing, or evil incarnate?
aely replied to aely's topic in Characters
BBC Sherlock is HUGE in the fan art/fiction world, so it is relevant. There are 22,150 works tagged as being Sherlock on Archive of Our Own (which is one of the biggest fanfic archives) alone and quite a few of those are also tagged as Johnlock or Mystrade. Then of course there is the massive Tumblr presence of Sherlock (I hate tumblr), which seems to be where most of the art can be found (I prefer Deviant Art). No fandom name is exactly relevant to its source material, unless you're a Castle fan. They actually mentioned ship names in an episode (Castle and Beckett being 'Caskett') but then Castle frequently references Firefly and Serenity too so I think you can count it as the exception that proves the rule.- 59 replies

I can't exactly confirm it, but with this being a tradition in the UK - which until Henry VIII was a catholic country - I wouldn't be surprised. Much Anglican tradition is related to RC tradition, but with the less believable bits pared off IMO (I was brought up as RC, married as an Anglican and now identify as either Jedi or Pastafarian). Wiki has this to say...

I got a wristband for not-christmas with "I believe in Sherlock Holmes" in white on the outside and "Moriarty was real" in black on the inside. http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lzcohq0mCy1rp7sixo1_r1_500.jpg -

I got myself this for Christmas but haven't had the time to read it yet as I'm now in the middle of 6 night shifts! Promising myself some downtime next week... -
Portmanteau 'Ship Names: a good thing, or evil incarnate?
aely replied to aely's topic in Characters
Not really - fussy bugger that I am. Plus, I would never in a million years abbreviate Sherlock's name unless someone in a fic was doing it to wind him up! Ah yes, Gwack...the exception that proves the rule in my case. Funnily enough, I don't mind portmanteau fandom names - Wholock, Superwho, Superwholock and so on, it just doesn't garner the same reaction (the whole steam coming out of my ears thing).- 59 replies

Good-Luck Charms, Superstitions, and Traditions

The exhaust fell off my car earlier in the week, that was fairly apocalyptic. Otherwise, not a sausage. As for the Scottish Play, it's a theatrical thing more than anything else - apparently saying the name M*****h inside a theatre will cause disaster unless you negate the bad luck (most actors have some strange anti-bad luck mechanisms that they make the person who has said the unfortunate name perform, including running around the theatre 3 times). -

It's not the word, it's just seeing a magpie on its own - one is classed as unlucky and other numbers aren't. Apparently magpies have been birds of ill omen since the 16th century in the UK but the rhyme dates from later than that according to wiki though I suppose it could have something to do with he perception of corvids in general as the group name is a 'murder of crows'. -
This is a screencap from the Ghost Light ep and this one is a promo pic from their 2nd series together It didn't seem odd that they did those sort of promos - it suited their characters.
