So, Carol says "once burnt, twice shy" and I say "once bitten, twice shy" anyone have any other variants? Is the bitten thing just British or perhaps even a regional variant?
-
Another one for the language thread - we say "Once bitten, twice shy." Back to Sherlock Holmes, I've still not read any of the original stories (I know, bad me). From what I understand in A Study in Scarlet, which I think is the first one, he is quite a young man. For someone with his brain power who has difficulty with social skills, a bad experience at an early age certainly could have the effect of turning him off relationships for all time. Hell, it's still happening - I know so many people who have come out of relationships, often long term, for various reasons, who say they have had enough of them and are no longer interested in the sheer mess a relationship makes, or the hard work a decent relationship requires.

It wasn't my fault, honest! I'm blaming Sam, Dean, Castiel and Methos, though in my defence I have mentioned this place on facebook before now. Anyway, glad you got here in one piece, Becca; céad míle fáilte!

I doubt chip and pin stuff will be getting phased out - it's pretty damn ubiquitous now and the unreliability seems to have settled down.

They did? Blast my ears - the first line was so clear that I think my brain supplied the rest without me hearing it properly. Subtitles are pretty much essential for me at home but I have to do without at cinemas so I suppose it isn't surprising I mishear things, especially when I'm expecting a particular phrase. Funnily enough, I didn't really fall for anyone in the Hobbit, but I fell hook, line and sinker for Faramir in LOTR. I got my own copies of both books in 1978. The 'if Baggins loses' interchange wasn't in the book - I looked for it!

Went to see the Hobbit yesterday with a bunch of friends and loved it - I was literally bouncing in my seat at some points (and not necessarily at the things people might expect, one of them was just before the appearance of Saruman in Rivendell). I adore the way they've integrated so much of the dialogue of the book into the film and managed to fit the background story that we're given in the appendices of LOTR and other slot into the film. Favourite bits: The quoting of the first paragraph of the book... "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.", The inclusion of the song "That's what Bilbo Baggins hates" Radagast - I loved the way Sylvester played him. And the rabbits - "I'd like to see them try!" The riddle scene between Gollum and Bilbo. I will be getting this on DVD for sure.

Yup, wellingtongoose has been at it again. This is what is said about this latest meta: This meta is dedicated to discussing the intrigues and deceptions that are only hinted at on screen and play out behind the scenes. I aim to show everyone why Irene is not a loser but an incredibly intelligent and ambitious woman. Read it on LJ

Wilde and Shaw at different times, I think but that's just off the top of me head so don't take my word as gospel.

Ah, American overalls are English dungarees (dungaree being an Indian loan word) or bib and brace. To me overalls generally mean an all in one boiler suit effort (like Lestrade's paper suit) as a smock wouldn't cover everything (therefore wouldn't be over all), I've never heard it used in the singular as 'an overall' but that doesn't mean it isn't somewhere else in the country. You can have jumpers with buttons, but as soon as the front opens completely, it morphs into a cardigan. So yes, a jumper goes on over your head which is why it's also called a pullover.

braces in English does not mean overalls where I come from Apart from any slang, Rory essentially means 'Red King' as it is the Anglicised form of the Goidelic (Scots and Irish Gaelic) Ruarídh which comes from rua(dh) meaning red and rígh meaning king (which also gives us the surname MacArdry - meaning 'son of the high king'). The Welsh (Brythonic) form is Rhodri.

Hello Alex, welcome to the forum. I'm a native of Liverpool in North West Britain and your English is better than mine (not surprising, us Scousers don't always regard ourselves as English) There are so many bits of physics and chemistry that overlap though! When I was studying chemistry (it was a while back) my favourite parts were organic chemistry and quantum mechanics and I actually have the molecular structure of theobromine (the active alkaloid of chocolate) tattooed on my back.

As Carol said, those two shots are not exactly of the same place, the bus could in fact still be there in the second one and you wouldn't see it due to the angle from which it is taken. Ah, the laundry/bin truck. I'm in agreement - that probably has got something to do with the plot.

I had a dvd drive in my computer that wasn't region specific, but the software I used was for a certain number of watches - at that time I was using Power dvd - and that always warned me how many goes I had left. I used to just uninstall it before it got locked, then reinstall it again so I could start from scratch. Then I found VLC and didn't have to worry any more! Can't exactly do that with a dvd player. I remember when we were still in the days of watching vcrs that it was a big thing to try and get a video player that was ntsc compatible (so I could watch my Highlander videos). DVDs don't have to be region specific. Joss Whedon made a point of stipulating that the Firefly dvds were NOT to be region specific. My current dvd player is region free - it was the cheapest one I could find in Asda at the time!

Hello there! So how does your mind palace work, then? I'm too chaotic and disorganised to have managed anything like that.

Don't forget chocolate! A nice bit of Green and Blacks would do...

I like "Consulting Detective's Doctor" but he's also Sherlock's conscience...

I used Lycos and Webcrawler and still spent far too much time on the internet at 4am (because that's when I had 'free calls' instead of having to pay for my time).

As for why there are so few episodes, partly it's due to do with the way shows are written. For Sherlock, there are just 3 writers (one per episode) but even for something like Doctor Who there aren't as many writers as episodes - The Moff writes Who episodes as well as being head honcho. All the people who are high up in the Sherlock pantheon are very busy people - they probably couldn't manage more than 3 episodes a year! I understand that for many US shows they use a system called a writers room, there's a pool of writers and ideas are often shared though the person who has them may not be the one who in the end writes them into an episode. More people means the work is spread out, or at leas that's the way I've interpreted it.
-
John basically watches Sherlock's back, he's his security - bodyguard if you like - in more ways than one. Maybe use that somehow? I like the idea of another rank before we hit the 'top' with Consulting Detective (though I do like Army Doctor).

No, it doesn't.

Lucy's character was O-Ren Ishii in Kill Bill, Joan's brother in Elementary is Oren Watson. I read somewhere after spotting it that it was intentional but can't remember where now.
