My 12 Disc Boxset of Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes is a prized possession. When I came out I already had purchased each individual release of the show and even had downloaded most off the internet to watch on my iPhone. I miss Jeremy Brett but I suspect that there would be no modern tv shows or movies without him in them if he was still alive. While I enjoy watching the old movies the best - I do trust Brett's canonical depiction of the Master. Watching him is like reading ACD. I did not enjoy the last few shows when he was dying. It was so sad to see him in such a state physically. I do think the Holmes/Watson relationship is closest to ACD's books. Highly recommend anyone who does not want to read the ACD stories to at least watch this series. It will make watching Sherlock and Elementary much more entertaining.

It was sad seeing Brett fading right before your eyes. I miss him. I agree that Watson, in the movies, was shown as a bumbler. In the OTR shows he is treated more fairly and as a friend and worthy associate. I really think that the world needed a laugh back when the WWII holmes movies came out. Watson's character was used to help the public relax and have fun while Holmes saved the world. I do like the way Watson is evolving in the Sherlock show. ACD might even approve - but I don't think even he would have thought up the dynamic way Sherlock and Watson are relating and working in the show. Pure genius. -
Good evening, my fellow Sherlockians

Welcome - you will be glad you came to our little corner of the net. You already sound like a regular. (I've only been hanging around for a few months and I'm still coming back for more.) -
I'm only a Cynic when discussing. When I'm watching, listening, or reading anything Holmes I'm just like a little Kid the first time through. I just enter the story and live! But after - I enjoy picking everything to death. Ha.

You are 100% Right on all four counts. Well put.

Thanks for the information. I've been to UK every year for the past 30 years and never realized that ITV was not a part of the BBC. Just assumed they were another studio making shows for BBC.

From A Monstrous Regiment of Women (p. 280): Russell asks Holmes, very well aware that he is going to turn furious: “How are the fairies in the bottom of your garden?”. My! A provocation unheard-of to wave in front of his (and our) nose this well known - and in our eyes to ACD - pretty embarrassing affair of the fake fairy photograph. http://www.sherlockiana.dk/shklub/artikler/lrkandmr.shtml

I'm with you on this one. As in the shower scene in Dallas, in television, they always can write in ways to bring anyone back from the dead. But with a female Watson, it may be a while before the plot or ratings will need a dramatic love interest for Holmes.

I think she wants to protect him from himself and - at the same time is getting hooked on the "Chase!"

I always picture Holmes as Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Watson. Probably because I have watched the old movies so many times and listened to the Old TIme Radio Shows. I never picture them as the Characters in the Movies as played by Downey and Law. While the movies are ok - Watson would never act like that towards Holmes and Holmes would never Act like that - PERIOD. But the movies are clever but more fiction than the fiction they are portraying. ha. Brett definitely has been the greatest actor to play the part. The early shows were great. As he went along I found them less appealing. -

Emailing direct questions, opening conversations with them on their likes or dislikes, communicating with them in the forum. Offering advice to a member. ( you mite like visiting this forum to talk about...), liking some of their posts, replying to a post directly. Asking them their opinion. etc. Just some ideas. -
As a mystery fan I know Morse, and love the BBC show. James Bond, I have every film made in DVD, and on Digital Media to play on my Ipad ad Iphone. The only pink panther I have in my collection is a set of short cartoons that ran before the movies. Don;t really like overtly comedy mysteries.

I agree that Watson and Holmes are close to the same age. Watson has many interests and is such a likable person in the Holmes stories, He cares, sympathizes, defends, and protects. He would have to take a back seat to Mary because Mary is going to take on that role and more in Sherlocks life. While she is brilliant, she also is often blind to human needs and factors. Her focus is as sharp as Holmes and when they are in sync it is like a symphony. Watson is not left behind, he is just not needed in these cases.

Ok - I'm glad you have joined us from Germany. Your english is rather grand even though it seems rather British. If you want to speak English the way "God" intended then you need to learn "Southern English." I'm from Tennessee in the USA and we have a unique way of speaking, sharing, and communicating. My Hebrew, Greek, and Latin are long forgotten but my Southern English is fresh and growing more expressive every day. Welcome to our Forum, Miss Sayura. You're going to love the forum. Lots of fun.

Thank you for the information. I am new to all this. Enjoying it all but probably breaking a few rules or forum etiquette. Appreciate your keeping things running smoothly. -
Great information. I did not know that they had a different writer for each episode. Amazing.

My son does not get into the King books. My mother loved them. My wife likes the audio books. I like the idea of the books (Holmes mentoring, relating, smitten, sparring, etc. - but personally like the interaction between Holmes and Mary the best. When it strays too far from that I just read. The mystery parts of the books are always clever so they are worth reading.

Just for reference - some detective synonyms: Investigator, Gumshoe, Copper, Crimefighter, Private eye, Private Investigator, Bobbie, P. I., agent, analyst, bird dog, bloodhound, constable, cop, dick, eavesdropper, fed, fink, flatfoot, informer, police officer, shadow, sleuth, snoop, spy, tail. While most of these probably won't fit towards the end of the list, a few would be fun to use at the beginning of list. Not pushing for using any of these or changing the way it is now.

I like that idea. It is great setting the level high for the final Consulting Detective but adding as many levels below will only make those moving up the ranks have a little more joy at meeting another level. So, i'm all for it.

I'm sure you will figure it all out. I have an ipad, and iphone, but visit the site from my MacBook Pro. Will have to try it from my ipad and see if it offers and clues. I know you could post photos on one of the web photo sites or facebook, flicker, etc. and then post the link on here. That may be simpler. Will keep an eye open and check back often to see if you post anything. -

Maybe one of the regular members, who have been around for a while, could type up some suggestions on what to do next or areas to detect around in. I am not a "forum" expert and have just been hunting and not really knowing what to do or how to do anything. Ha. But since we are not simply wanting to add members but actually have folks post, like, read, enjoy, it may help. You may have sent me something in the mail and I missed it or there may be somewhere on the site I was told to go and I did not understand the clue. This is not a criticism - We all definitely don't want to have this be like a job. This is so relaxing for me. Exploring has been fun. -
Is it polite to ask what other Sherlock forums there may be? I would hate to search the net and go clicking on some dubious site links when there are some great leads already available. Ha.
