I've been nosing around a bit on the internet, and this forum has a good discussion on the subject, pretty well summed up by these posts:

In the UK, "series" usually refers to both the entire collection of episodes from all years and a batch of episodes broadcast in a run, usually in the same year.

Although, due to the influx of US programmes, the US "season" is becoming more widespread in the UK, especially when talking about American programmes.

For a British born English speaker in Britain, "series" usually refers to that one batch of episodes and all the episodes of a particular programme is usually just referred to as "the programme" or "the whole programme".

... in British English 'season' also has a meaning different to American English, being a group of programmes on a theme. For instance, there may be a Dad's Army season on BBC2, which could encompass selected episodes of Dad's Army itself, documentaries ... and so on.

Bearing all this in mind, I find it difficult to come up with terminology that would be unambiguous on both sides of the Atlantic.  When trying to be clear for international consumption, I do occasionally say "the whole program" (as a synonym for "series" in the American sense), but that's not perfect, because I've also heard Americans use that phrase to mean one single episode -- for example, "Our cable wasn't working last night, so I missed the whole program."

As for series vs season, I believe I've heard "run" used in that sense -- though of course it's also used to refer to all the performances of a particular production of a stage play.  I do like being able to make the distinction that American English draws between a batch of episodes and all the episodes.

That's what I love most about Stephen Colbert -- his subtlety!

I liked the episode 'the Zygon invasion'.

After the recent disappointing episodes, this is a very good one.

Definitely one of the Highlights of Series9.

The Zygon invasion - 8,5/10

And btw. the Doctor is a Zygon.

Maybe this one was even better than the one before...? I really liked it, when Clara was captivate in that kind of apartment but had an influence to Zygon Clara. This hole idea and how it was filmed was insane.

And the doctor's speech in the end...amazing! Capaldi's performance was wonderful und Jenna Coleman's also.

The Zygon inversion - 9/10

With the witch's familiar the best episode of series 9 so far and a very good twoparter!

There is still hope for series 9!

I've missed most of the episodes so far. I've seen 1, 4, 5, & 6 if I remember correctly. Missed the last 2 weeks because the hotel didn't have BBCA and I was watching Phantom last week.

I've seen the first two episodes from the 9th season and I love them SO much! Ahh the unpredictable jaw-dropping stuff!

I also have to second that Missy is amazing. I liked The Master when he was a he but he just wasn't crazy enough. Maybe I am making unecessary connections, but since I love Heath Ledger, Missy keeps reminding me of his Joker. :)

And the season 8 finale is still on my mind -- that little speech The Doctor had about being an idiot with a box was one of those moments to me.

We're a couple weeks behind now.  Oops!  Maybe tonight we'll power up the DVR...

I guess this shows where my priorities like, though.  I haven't missed an episode of The Walking Dead yet.

I've missed half this season. I will be able to catch last week's episode on Saturday.

I'm caught up!  Capaldi is really great.  The way he looks at Clara... I feel like we're gonna be in for another tearful goodbye a la 11 and Amy Pond.

Capaldi is really great indeed!

BIG SPOILER is following!

Clara maybe "dies" in 'Face the Raven'.

And have you heard the rumors about Series10?

Posted

Series 10 has been discussed in press interviews over the past few days. First up, Peter Capaldi has hinted that events in the final few episodes of Series 9 will leave the Doctor in a way that may lead him back to being a more “cynical and closed-off” Doctor next year.

Capaldi told press [via]: “It’s been nice to see him more cheerful, but of course as the whole [of Series 9] develops, more terrible things happen. So in fact, I think by the end, he’s going, ‘Oh man, I was right, I should’ve remained cynical and closed off and suspicious’.

“If you’ve been following this Doctor, you’ve seen him go through all those different colours and all those different places. So where he goes now – in series 10 – I don’t know, but he’s been put through the mill.”

Capaldi also revealed his hopes for the next companion, hoping for someone more ‘earthy’: “It’s one of the things I loved about Billie Piper. That was a very new thing in Doctor Who – to have somebody who lived on an estate, and had a much earthier sound to their voice. I mean, I love Jenna – I’m really sad that she’s gone, and I feel quite bad discussing the possibility of somebody else. So it’s no reflection on her. But I think it might be interesting to have somebody who’s a little more earthy!”

Steven Moffat, meanwhile, had bad news for fans who were hoping Osgood would take the role: “She’s a great character and we love her, but whether you really get a relaunch out of bringing someone on board the TARDIS who’s already been there, I don’t know. It did work very well with Catherine Tate [as Donna], but that’s not the direction we’re currently going in. I quite like where we’ve got Osgood at the moment.”

He adds: “I’m not making any promises, but that’s my genuine belief at the moment. Because I think to throw away the chance to say ‘You can start here’ is foolish. If you say, ‘You could start here, but [the companion is] somebody you have to know all about’ then you’ve lost that. I think every time we get a new companion – even more so than a new Doctor – you are sort of saying, ‘This is the beginning. This is where it starts. You can join in here’.”

Despite last week’s comments about Clara being gone forever, Moffat also added: “You can never say that someone can never come back. They always can, because it’s a show about time travel. So it’s entirely possible.”

Finally, Doctor Who’s production designer Michael Pickwoadindicated that filming of next year’s run will not begin until around April/May 2016 (from its usual January start). This would mean there is no way they will have time to film a full series and air it in its entirety in 2016.

I copied that from the german Doctor Who forum.

Clara being gone forever sounds a bit not good.

I was sad with how things were going with Clara.  Can't wait until Saturday when we hopefully get the conclusion to that cliffhanger.

I also thought of a way for Doctor Who and Sherlock to crossover.  The Doctor & his companion land at the set for Sherlock and the Doctor is confused for a bit as to why Sherlock isn't real and/or Benedict isn't quite like his on screen counterpart.  If they really wanted to have fun with it, the Sherlock characters could be in the Victorian costumes to add to the conundrum.

Dudes,. Wassuuup. Detective here. I have some news, maybe spoilers for the christmas special.

It’s Christmas Day on a remote human colony and the Doctor is hiding from Christmas Carols and Comedy Antlers. But when a crashed spaceship calls upon the Doctor for help, he finds himself recruited into River Song’s squad and hurled into a fast and frantic chase across the galaxy.

King Hydroflax (Greg Davies) is furious, and his giant Robot bodyguard is out-of-control and coming for them all! Will Nardole (Matt Lucas) survive? And when will River Song work out who the Doctor is?

All will be revealed on a starliner full of galactic super-villains and a destination the Doctor has been avoiding for a very long time.

I was never a huge Doctor Who fan, but I watched and enjoyed the show during the Tom Baker and Peter Davison eras. Some bits of the show do seem to have stuck with me, though. Yesterday, while bringing one of our cats home from the veterinary clinic, I drove past a road sign that said "Survey Crew Ahead," and I immediately thought of those workers as Warriors of the Severteen. (But on the other hand, while talking with the clinic's technicians, I had not thought of them as The Tesh.)

Well well. Doctor Who series 9 is over...

And

Clara is gone... The hard thing is, that the doctor doesn't remember Clara...

But he'll see River again, very soon.

There are trailers for the Christmas special available already.

This fat dude from little Britain is also in the special.

I wish they'd start showing it again on our PBS station......

Oh, I'm SO looking forward to seeing the Christmas special! I can't wait to see the chemistry between Peter and Alex. And it looks like it will be quite funny, too. I sure need that after the last 3 episodes of the 9th season...

Well, another bittersweet goodbye...

I think Clara maybe should have gone last season...

However, she's gone now.

What do you think of the new Sonic Screwdriver?

I'm glad we have it back but I think Smith's was better, the new design just doesn't look that good.

Actually, I have nothing against what they did with Clara.
I love the whole thing completely and I sometimes I don't understand all the "Moffat hate". (maybe it feels wrong what he is doing for the old fans who have seen the classic series, I don't know, because I started from 2005)
Russel´s writing was very good - no doubt - but I love all the Moffat-complicated-unpredictable-mindblowing stuff.

I think the sonic looks good -- fits this Doctor. I also liked Smith's one the best, but maybe it's just a thing of "getting used to".
Although, the sunglasses look really cool on Peter. Some people thought they are just really stupid, that he has to have a screwdriver but I'm not one of them, heheh.
