So I spent a good chunk of Thanksgiving weekend getting my mother hooked on Doctor Who.  We got her through Series 1 and partway through Series 2 with Tennant.  And while I didn't catch it the first time I watched, there are some very similar lines/themes in Doctor Who and Sherlock...

The Doctor:  Don't worship me, I'd make a very bad god.

Sherlock:  Don't make people into heroes John. Heroes don't exist, and if they did I wouldn't be one of them.

I also thought it was interesting in "Boom Town" the discussion of coincidence with regards to "Bad Wolf."  Reminded me of this exchange between Mycroft and Sherlock:

Mycroft Holmes: Oh, Sherlock, what do we say about coincidence?
Sherlock Holmes: Universe is rarely so lazy.

I'm at the MN Renaissance festival and there is a guy running around as the Doctor. Classic, hat & multi-colored scarf...forget which Doctor that is.

Thanks Carol. Turns out I was remembering correctly for not having watched more than 5 minutes of classic Doctor Who back some time in the mid '80s

So are we all ready for the new season on Saturday?   :D

H and I just finally got caught up on Season 8 last night.... just in time.

I do feel bad I'm not more invested in Clara since we now know she's leaving the show.  She's OK, but overall pretty meh for me.  Although, I was never a huge Amy fan until the farewell that left me sobbing, literally.  Soooo...

I'm liking Capaldi more than I thought I would.   I like his bitterness.  He's got a bit of edge to him, which for me is good after the all too bubbly Matt Smith.

I'm so looking forward to it.  I got caught up a couple of weeks ago.  The only episode of the reboot I haven't seen is the 2014 Christmas Special.

How do we see the Christmas special?  I didn't see it on Netflix or on my On Demand?

I don't know.  I haven't figured that part out yet. However,...

The S9 Prequel is on at 10EDT on BBC America tonight!!!  It's 10min. Long.

AS we get ready for the next series to launch today, BBCA has a Which Master are you quiz here.

I got the Eric Roberts Master:

You are cool, cocky and confident. You are also utterly ruthless. You know that you're a dude, people can tell by the way you dress, the way you hold yourself, all those muscles, that immaculate hair, and this serves a dual purpose. It alerts everyone to the fact that here is a force to be reckoned with, someone with no weak spots whatsoever, a champ and a fighter.

Of course, only people who are scared of being struck in their weak underbelly are worried about pretending they don't have one. And this is something you'd go to incredible lengths to avoid anyone finding out. It's a preventative measure that is common to all cool people, one that accounts for the slightly brittle, dismissive way they tend to deal with everyone.

If you cared about this, you'd take off the shades from time to time and start trying to engage with people on a more human level. But then someone who cared what other people thought wouldn't bother calling himself the Master in the first place.

Below that quiz are 4 other Doctor Who Quizzes (if you still need to take them): Which Monster are you, Which story is your life, Which Doctor are you, and Which companion are you.

From the prequel:  "She keeps telling me I've got attention deficit aahh... something or other."  lol

Alas, the only station running DW in my area is currently stuck in the Pertwee era. But at least they're showing them in sequence.

That's OK, at least I got to see the Doctor's epic entrance.  :)

Capaldi has really grown on me a great deal.

Any suggestions for re-watching episodes 2 & 3 as I'm missing them both because of events I'm attending? Thanks.

Okay, squeezing all possible from the Netflix trial I watched some random episodes. Which feel like a series of Déjà-Vu.

Just yesterday, skimming trough TEH for research purposes, I realized that I always want to say how I like the artwork made of gear wheels in the Train Guy's room. And today I see this:

The second one is another reflection of Anderson's room.

And then the writing: "Hidden in plain sight"... and many little lines and words that made me feel a bit paranoid.

Is everything on British telly an intellectual Soylent Green?

PS: of course I had to watch Lazarus Experiment. What was amazing about Mark's performance - the voice! I didn't recognize his voice at all, he sounded like an old man. You sure the part wasn't dubbed?

Dudes what do you think of Series 9 so far?

To be honest, I don't like it that much... Series 8 wasn't my favorite one too.

I mean Capaldi is an amazing Doctor but he gets the bad storys.

Seems like Moffat is putting too much creativity into Sherlock.

If Moffat is putting most of his creativity into Sherlock, then Whovians should be glad.   ;)   But frankly, I'm pretty sure he has enough to go around.  :naughty:

I've actually been enjoying Series 9 so far, more than series 8.   Also, why is everything with the BBC a series?  Seasons, it's seasons... I always want to say seasons.

Anyhow, I like this new format with the two part episodes.  I feel like it allows them to tell a more in-depth story than they'd otherwise have time for in an hour.

Capaldi is fabulous.  He's probably my 2nd favorite doctor at this point behind Tennant.  And the lady that plays Missy.  Missy is SOOOO much better than when he/she was The Master.

It's a to-may-to / to-mah-to thing.  What we Americans call a season, the British call a series.

What I've been wondering is, how do the British refer to the whole shebang?  For example, in American terminology, each of the three seasons of the original Star Trek has twenty-some episodes, making a total of 79 for the entire series.  Could one of you British folks please translate that into your native dialect?

That's true, Carol. I didn't even think of that. We have series premieres, series finales, season premieres, seasons finales.
