Something really cool just came in on the BBC newsfeed:

An Adventure In Space And Time

This special one-off drama travels back in time to 1963 to see how the beloved Doctor Who was first brought to the screen.

Go to the BBC website to read more, including a Q&A with writer and executive producer Mark Gatiss!

(I sure hope this shows up on this side of the Atlantic sooner or later!)

Alex and I were placing an order with Amazon UK, so I checked into getting this and found the following:

It's currently available as a Region 2 DVD from Amazon UK for 7 pounds (about $11 US) plus free shipping on UK orders over 10 pounds.

It's also available as a Blu-Ray / DVD combo pack (respectively region-free and Region 1), plus a "bonus" DVD (also Region 1) of the first original Doctor Who story, "An Unearthly Child," from Amazon US for $16.49 plus free shipping on US orders over $35.  We've decided to go with this option, partly for the original story (which we don't yet have), partly in hopes that the Blu-Ray is hi-def, and partly because shipping from the UK would offset the cheaper base price.

One fact that I either didn't know or had forgotten -- David Bradley (pictured above as William Hartnell as the Doctor) is the same actor who played Argus Filch in the Potter films.

Hey, I came across Dr Who a lot when doing research on Sherlock, so I'm thinking about ordering some Dr Who DVD(s). But which should I order? Do you need to start with season 1, or could you also start with a more current series? I usually don't like vintage series too much, so I'm not sure whether I really should order the first series - here in Germany they are damn f***ing expensive and I don't know anyone who has even ever heard of Dr Who, let alone who could advise me what to buy :(

Depends on your taste.  In my opinion, Tom Baker was the definitive Doctor.  That could be partly because he was the first actor I ever saw in the role, but he's very popular, not just with me.  So if you're interested in the original run of the show, you might start with him.

P.S.:  Tom Baker was the fourth Doctor (not to be confused with Colin Baker, the sixth Doctor).

I would recommend starting with the third Doctor (Jon Pertwee). I watched the first and second Doctor as well (because I just can't start watching something without knowing how it all began) but you wouldn't miss anything if you started with the third one. The first two Doctors are in black and white and many of the stories are missing or incomplete. Jon Pertwee was great as the Doctor and then there is the Master who's played by the amazing Roger Delgado. I haven't seen other Doctors because I still haven't got to the end of the third one.

Netflix! Try Netflix! They've got the new Doctor Who from Christopher Eccleston (9th) to Matt Smith (11th), which is Series 1-7. They also have the old Doctor Who, which is labeled as 'Classic Doctor Who' in the catalog.

I ordered a series 1-4 box on amazon.co.uk. My host family in the USA had netflix, but I'm not sure whether it even exists here in Germany! I could probably find out (would take 1 minute on google, I suppose), but I love owning DVDs ;)

I've watched a few episodes of Doctor Who with Tennant as the Doctor (will eventually watch more of his episodes).  Now I'm starting the Matt Smith edition with his first full episode and so far enjoying it.

I really liked Chris Eccleston and was worried when we made the switch to Tennant, but I also love Tennant.  Now I'm dreading the switch to Matt Smith (I think we just started the last Tennant season?), but hopefully it will be okay?  Right?  Right?

I found the 1st Matt Smith episode to have some comedy in it, more than I was expecting.  Mr. Moffat did some good writing.  He wrote the first 2 episodes and Mr. Gatiss did the 3rd one (which I'm currently watching).  Think I might becoming a Whovian to go with my Sherlockian.  I surprised my sister by having Doctor Who on because she knew I wasn't much into it a few years ago with the whole reboot (I could take it or leave it with Tennant even though I liked him as the Doctor & didn't bother with Smith until now) let alone the originals she used to watch when I was a kid.

I've only seen any of them intermittently, but I liked Matt Smith the best.

Just got done watching the Doctor Who finale on BBC America. Had a Moftiss moment only it was just Moffat. In the middle of the credits he wrote something unexpected (not necessarily as crazy as the end of Sherlock #3.3).

I just came across a quiz posted on the BBC American web site a year ago -- Which Doctor Are You?

Fortunately I came out to be one of my favorites, the Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison).

Tenth! Yay!

I got the 11th doctor which doesn't completely surprise me as I have seen more of his episodes than any of the others.

I'm the Second Doctor! Which is good, I think...

Yes, thank you. Can I pet K-9?

I'm 5! Sounds about right although I've never watched Classic Who.

I also got the 5th Doctor.  No clue.. only started watching with Eccleston.

This is the first week without Doctor Who and I miss it already.  It didn't matter to me to get up at 4.30am or 5.30am (when daylight savings kicked in) on a Sunday morning (we got it streamed in Australia at the same time as it was showing in the UK) I so looked forward to seeing the latest episode.

I got the 1st Doctor, actually it's pretty spot it!

"Some people think you are crabby and difficult to get close to. They may have a point, but what they see as rudeness is just you being careful with the friends you pick.

You have incredibly high standards, but once someone has proven themselves to be worthy of your attention you'll pull an entire planet apart for them. And rescue them in the event of a Dalek attack.

Also, woe betide anyone that thinks you are frail or weak. There's a spark in your eyes that could become a raging fire."

Peter Davison,  I had a crush on him  many years ago when he was in All Creatures Great and Small and I've been rewatching All Creatures  and I have to say I had good taste when I was younger.

Right, Davison played the young veterinarian in All Creatures -- and for you trivia buffs, he was also the voice of the canned planetarium show in "Great Game."  His Doctor was pretty cool, sensible but quirky, always wore a sprig of celery in his lapel buttonhole.
