This idea drew some interest on another thread, so I'm giving it a home of its own.  The idea is to take a name or phrase related to BBC Sherlock and turn it into an anagram for the rest of us to solve.  For example, if if the anagram is BERET TAKERS, the solution is BAKER STREET.

The number of words in the anagram may differ from the original phrase, and likewise the punctuation (if any) -- but the letters must be identical, merely rearranged.

A Few Simple Rules:

Solving anagrams should be done without software assistance, but if you'd like help creating an anagram, there are some websites you can use (I lost my bookmarks --  but sherlockandjohn recommends this one: http://www.angelfire.com/biz/WLAW/anagram.html)

It's legal to use the letter tiles from a Scrabble set to help you solve an anagram (or to help you create one).  Likewise, you can just write each letter on a little scrap of paper.

When you post a solution, please enclose it in a Spoiler Box.  (Type your post, then highlight the soltion.  Click the exclamation-in-a-triangle icon on the bottom row of the Editor toolbar.  A little window will come up, and all you have to do is click OK.)

As with our Hangman game, whoever solves an anagram gets to provide the next one.  So right now, it's T.O.B.Y's turn.

Oh dear! Um... oh no, this is hard! Sorry, I had to use an internet anagram program, am too tired to figure it out myself:

Might we want to put our answers in spoiler boxes?  I'm thinking there might sometimes be some discussion and/or correction of an anagram, which might be helpful to those trying to solve it -- but they wouldn't dare look ahead for fear of seeing the solution.

What do y'all think?

Just to make sure: When making an anagram (I kinda like coming up with them), you can form a sentence that doesn't really make sense, right? Like "Stares meat a me" for "Mates are mates", as long as the individual words are actual words...?

Posted

Yes, I believe that's the usual tradition.  (And actually, I don't suppose you'd even have to make words, you could just jumble up the letters any which way.)  But it's more fun if you can come up with some sort of phrase or sentence.  The ideal is when the anagram is a clue to the phrase -- but please don't ask me for an example!

I've edited my initial post to clarify that anagram websites and other software may be used to create an anagram, but are not considered kosher for solving an anagram.  (Kind of analogous to it being OK to use Sherlock transcripts for verifying a Hangman quote before you post it, but not for solving it..)

How do y'all feel about using Scrabble tiles or letters written on scraps of paper as solving aids?  Should that be "legal"?

Thanks for your opinion, S&J -- I'm a great believer in Scrabble tiles myself, since I don't usually anagram very well by just looking.  I'll go edit my initial post accordingly.

T.O.B.Y -- was S&J's solution correct?  If so, it's now your turn, S&J.

I can't believe I guessed the beret takers without an answer. I didn't guess the second one though. How do you make a spoiler box?

Posted

The second one was tougher for sure -- I had to use my Scrabble set to solve it.

To make a spoiler box, just type in everything as usual, then highlight the part you want to put inside the box.  Click the exclamation-in-a-triangle icon on the second row of the Editor toolbar.  A little window will come up, and you just need to click OK.

Why don't you go ahead, then S&J?  T.O.B.Y doesn't seem to be following this thread, and your solution looks good to me.

Sorry! Sorry! Yes, it was correct, of course - I thought that was so "obvious" I didn't confirm it. Sherlock moment... :P

Thanks, T.O.B.Y.  In general, I suspect it will be obvious.  But every now and then we might get the words turned around or something like that.

Gaaah!  Could you maybe narrow it down a little by posting some sort of clue (in a spoiler box, I guess)?  Thanks!!!

That's right, Arcadia! We should probably post our answers in spoiler boxes, in order to avoid revealing it to someone who'd like to keep trying to guess.

Your turn!

Sorry, I should have said something in the initial post about putting solutions in a spoiler box.  Off to do that now ....

Ooops, sorry, that makes sense. Thanks Carol.

That was funny - it came to me instantly. That's rare.

You got it! It was the "v" that gave it away, wasn't it? :-)

Yeah, I think it was, actually :) That's what triggered it.
