Well I guess that could work if you had it recorded or owned it. However most of the shows I watch are not.

I have developed a good eye for subtitles after years of practice - I no longer have to read them, I just scan as I'm watching in case I can't make out everything that is said. Obviously I have less problems with dialogue in British shows as I'm tuned into the accent, and am more likely to spot errors in subtitling but since I developed the scanning thing mistakes don't bother me so much as they used to.

SherLOCKED, I am not offended, I just don't like people making assumptions.

Deafness is a hidden disability even when you can see a person face to face, it's even more hidden when you interact online. I am a little twitchy about the age thing as losing ones hearing when relatively young is the bane of my family - my dad was 21, my mum in her early 30s, me at 24, my eldest sister is also losing her hearing but luckily not as fast and doesn't yet need aids and she's just turned 50. We're an interesting family to ENT specialists due to the otosclerosis as it's not so common to have as many members affected as we have.

If you download shows to watch, rather than streaming, and you want subtitles, there are some pretty good sites out there now that will have subtitles ready usually the day after broadcast. I downloaded the new ep of Castle yesterday and the subtitles today so I could watch it - the subtitles files are tiny.

A part of me would say I feel sympathetic, and the other... Well lets just keep it shut up in a little box labeled "Things CSIBakerStreet (aka Sherlock) Would Say".

*laughs* Lets keep it lighthearted shall we?

I am more than happy to keep things lighthearted. :boing:

Good episode tonight! Three or four plot twists -- in the first fifteen minutes! An engaging new character who I hope we'll see again. And a mysterious name from Sherlock's past (more on that next week, apparently).

Aely by the way, I meant that I watch the shows on pay TV or what I call Free-To-Air which means the channels available to everyone(Although I know the TV Licence isn't free but I hope you know what I mean)

A while back, I had this to say on the "Robert Downey, Jr." thread:

... I just have to say that this is the first dramatization I've ever seen where Holmes is cuddlier than Watson!

Well, this is the second one!

I don't like Jude Law as Watson, he's so rigid. John should be "normal" but not so...stiff

I find Lucy Liu pretty cuddly - I'd be more than happy to oblige, in fact. I'd probably get distracted by JLM's tatts if I tried to cuddle him. All wishful thinking of course.

Wishfull thinking for sure! *giggles*

I loved him in Eli Stone and he was scary good in Dexter!!

Funny thing is I can't bare to watch John Lithgow anymore after he played Trinity but JLM is fine. Maybe something to do with their level of creepyness??

I've noticed that pretty much the only new show I want to keep up with is Elementary. I find that while it is following the "Sherlock" theme, it is different enough to keep me interested. I wonder, will there be a Mycroft, or is that too much to ask? And how will they handle Watson's coming up departure date? Because she has declared her intent to leave.......hmmmm? :sherlock:

Ditto.

Come to think of it, it's a bit odd that Watson was hired by Sherlock's father, when Mycroft is the canonical "father figure." Then again, she's never met him (and I don't believe we've ever heard his first name), so maybe it was actually Mycroft, claiming to be the father, calculating that Watson might object to interfering in Sherlock's life on the say-so of a mere brother. In any case, if there is to be a Mycroft in this show, he will clearly be lazy and obese (sticking to canon as lawsuit-avoidance), so I doubt he'd ever come to New York. But maybe Sherlock & Watson will need to go to London sometime?

Did you see last night's show? I think Watson's mother was laying the groundwork for a new partnership between her and Sherlock. It'll be interesting to see how it goes from here.

Well Carol, as it happens I can't afford cable. But the person I rent my room from has wifi, so I watch everything a day later on my little old HP notebook. As it happens I shall probably try watching now, if the the old thing doesn't melt down first. The fan has been having a bad time lately and there is a nasty overheating problem. I sadly fear that my little HP is on it's last legs. Thankfully my bro and sis in law are planning on getting me a laqptop in the new year. Now I shall scamper away and watch Elementary!

We don't have cable either, so I can certainly sympathize. But I'm a bit surprised that you can't pick up the CBS station (WIVB channel 4) from Buffalo.

is elementary any good?

I think so, quite a few agree, some others don't. Try it, you might love it.

Agreed. And if you'll scan back through this thread, I believe you'll see that the only negative reviews are from people who haven't yet seen it. (I don't believe there's going to be an episode broadcast in the US this coming week, though; don't know about the UK or elsewhere.)

mkay maybe ill try it. idk. a woman as watson just doesnt work for me. i just kind of think it throws it of especially with holmes being in a relationship with her. i usually like things that stick more closely to the original

Having a female Watson is one of Elementary's trademarks, but it's not just a glued-on gimmick. The inherent differences are nicely integrated. For instance, the show is less physical than Sherlock, with Watson contributing more knowledge than martial prowess -- and therefore her smaller muscle mass has not been an issue.

There is no sign that Elementary's Holmes is even capable of forming a romantic attachment. He does have friends of a sort -- just a few -- and Watson may be on the brink of becoming one of them. But if there's the slightest touch of sexual tension between them, neither has shown any sign of noticing it.

Each incarnation of Holmes and Watson (including Sherlock) has its own distinctive differences from the original Conan Doyle stories, but by and large, each also has its own internal integrity. I believe that's the case with Elementary, and I encourage you to have a look.

My friend in Australia claims that Elementary will be on their Channel 10 soon in the next year. I don't know if that helps anyone.

I do belive the female Watson began as a gimmick but it has the potential to grow from that.

Also, wasn't Lucy Liu some kind of action star anyway and stared in "Charlie's Angels"? I wouldn't think physical fighting would be a problem for her.

She was also in Kill Bill, so no, fighting wouldn't be a problem!

Please let us know what your friend thinks of the show! :D

Thanks for pointing that out (I had seen the ads, but forgot). In any case, Elementary has been relatively cerebral so far -- but good to know there is potential for an extra dimension!
