Aren't there siblings who look really different, hair color and all? (There's also a rare, very very rare occurance where siblings have different skin colors even though they come from the same parents.)

My siblings and I each have a different hair color & possibly eye color (not sure the color of my brother's eyes) & I know 2 ladies who do look completely different.  They are milado, 1 looks like she's Native American, the other has the hair structure and face shape that is common with black people but her coloring looks like a Caucasian.

We have hair like that on Mom's side of the family -- blond afro's.  Mine is just wavy/curly with a mind of its own, though.

Mine's wavy curly as well (2" waves).  I gave myself a stiff neck on Sunday by taking out a rat's nest in my hair on Saturday (my own fault for it developing in the first place).  It doesn't help that my hair is 27" long and was soaking wet at the time of the attempted brushing.  (There is a chance the stiff neck could have been from my attempted nap an hour earlier, but my friend from church who does my hair liked the idea of the rat's nest as it was funnier.)

When I wore my hair long, I didn't dare brush it wet.  I would just comb it through once with an extra-wide-tooth comb and then not touch it again till it was bone dry.  Trying to do anything else while it was wet just made it snarl.

Back when beehive hairdos were popular, I teased my hair just one time.  It took me hours to get it combed out again, so there was never a second time.

I can't find a comb with a good sturdy handle to even attempt wide tooth.  I find most handles are too narrow for my hands so I end up using a brush.  My hair snarls just by the shear fact that I'm breathing.  My hair was teased once for a cousin's wedding.  We, as the bridesmaids, had our hair up in twists.  I took out 50 bobby pins & put shampoo through my hair twice to get it to feel less like straw.

Now if the 3rd sibling were a girl and she had the long hair version of Sherlock's hair.  She could go through the same issues we do.  (my nice transition to un :hijacked: the thread :D)

Interesting thought -- which leads me to wonder what Mycroft's hair would look like if he didn't slick it down?  That's a whole character analysis right there.  And Jim slicks his hair down too.  Hmmm....

It's possible to have both straights & curly in the family. It happens in mine so it could be the same with the Holmes boys

It's rare but not unheard of for mixed race siblings to look rather different. These girls, for instance, are twins.

Even siblings from unmixed marriages can have different hair color. From strawberry blond to dark brown.

That is my family in a nutshell I had the blond on top strawberry blond (now more winter wheat), my sister was the dark auburn (now medium brown), & my brother is the dark brown (always has been just like our dad & all 3 of his kids have blond hair).  It is the crazy mix of Norwegian, Swedish, English, Irish, Scottish, & Germanic Jewish blood.  My son is the red on top strawberry blond (just like my mom)

I think they slick down their hair because it's all business, you know? The business of running the country and the business of murder. Plus, it makes them look important.

Wow, I just had a horrible thought .... what if the "other one" doesn't have any hair?!?!? :o

What a horrible trick to play on an innocent kitty-cat!  People who think it's cool to breed for that sort of thing (which has got to be uncomfortable as hell for the poor naked cat) had ought to be severely scolded (and I don't mean like Irene does!).

I know! We had a Siamese cat who's genetics went all the way back to the original line of cat who were the palace guards of the Siamese royal families. Her tail had an extra joint near the tip so she was descended from those cats that guarded the baths and were known as ring-bearers. The bather could slip their rings over the cat's tail and they then could crook that joint so that the rings couldn't slide off.

We researched it seeing if she needed to be registered. Come to find out modern breeders consider that a defective gene and are trying to breed it out....WHATTF?!?  These people are nuts. Certified nuts.

I didn't realized hairless cats suffered. I thought that there were just certain areas that wouldn't be good for them environmental wise. I take back my laughter & replace with a :(  if they suffer.

I've seen them here in Maine at cat shows...and yeah...they have to have special sweaters made for them if they reside here all year round. Mid Fall to late Spring would be a bit not good for these kitteh's. Unless the house had a real good heating system. But if they have any Siamese in them, they are going to gravitate toward any kind of heat source.

Posted

In my experience, most (all?) cats gravitate toward heat.  We have an enclosed porch off the west side of the living room, with a cat door between, and sunny August afternoons often find our crew forsaking the air-conditioned living room in favor of that solar sauna.

I've heard that some people believe hairless cats don't aggravate cat allergies in humans, but apparently that's not true -- the poor things still groom themselves, and it's the saliva and skin flakes that provoke allergies.  So the only reason for continuing to breed hairless cats seems to be that people think they're funny.  :blowmytop:

One other mutation that I wish people would stop breeding for is the ear fold, so that the cat is lop-eared and far more susceptible to ear mites and ear infections (due to decreased air circulation inside the ear).

Jess, it occurs to me that I didn't make it clear that I'm not irked with you for finding that photo funny.  It certainly is a funny-looking cat -- sorta reminds me of those movie gremlins.  The people I most definitely AM irked at are those who perpetuate the mutation to amuse their fellow humans, with no regard for the welfare of the cats.  Right up there with tying tin cans to a dog's tail, in my opinion.

Anyhow -- back to "the other one."

Yeah this thread has been highjacked hasn't it. So how did we get on the subject of a bald other one. the only completely bald character was the Golem. He did look like something was done to him. Maybe Mycroft figured out a way to mutate him. He certainly could pass as older than Mycroft.

Posted

Let's see -- we had been wondering how the other one would wear his/her hair, and then Arcadia suggested that he (presumably) might be bald.  That would be a shame, since it would deprive us of one clue as to whether he's more like Sherlock or more like Mycroft.

I was thinking more of how s/he might have their hair styled, since that would give us an idea of their personality.  Facial hair (hopefully on a man!) could also do that, though -- depending on whether it's a neatly-trimmed little goatee or a big bushy beard.
