Mycroft is most often paired with Lestrade, in slash fiction.

This is seriously weird. I wonder where the idea came from. It sounds so absurd. They must radically change the characters' personalities to make that work.

I don't read Mystrade fiction, because that pairing doesn't interest me, but judging by the small amount I've seen, Mycroft is rather more human in these alternative stories. Of course, that can always be justified on the grounds that people will let down their guard when they are in love.

Odd couples abound in fan fiction. I think one of the strangest is Mormor, i.e. Jim Moriarty and Sebastian Moran. This pairing pre- dates S3 and is very loosely based on the books. The character of Moran seems to have been created communally by the fans, and the fact that Moftiss more or less threw away Moran in TEH by reducing him to a minor character hasn't had much effect on Mormor devotees.

Least: Sally Donovan. She grinds my gears for some reason. Oh, yes - her constant sniping of Sherlock.

Most: Sherlock and John. I love those two.

However, I have to add Mycroft.

I've been wondering if a different version of Moran (other than the Empty Hearse one and the Mary Morstan one :P ) might not still make an appearance in the future.

This seems to have turned into a "what relationships could you tolerate" thread, but I don't mind a bit.

Okay, sure!

I could tolerate, um...

John/Mary (is there one of those portmanteau names for that? Shary? Mohn? Jostan?)

I couldn't tolerate:

Shercroft. (or Mylock, or whatever the heck it's called.) Ew. Just ... ew.

If you're looking for the discussion of spelling and homophones, I've moved it to the Language Thread, here.

You mean we successfully  :hijacked:  again. :)   We may need  :sherlock2: to determine why/how we keep doing that. ;)

A thread is a conversation, right?  How many real-life conversations have you ever had that stayed on the same subject for more than five minutes?

Several that have lasted longer than 5 minutes; however, I'm the queen of tangents and forgetting what I was originally talking about.

Not to force the thread back on topic or anything, (although Ruthyone may have done that  :)), but the only deaths I absolutely cannot tolerate are Sherlock and John.

As far as the others, I think I could stand (but not like) anything that feels organic to the story.  So, I don't think they'll kill off Mycroft or Lestrade, for example, because those guys exist in ACD canon for a while yet and would be useful to the plot.

I really hope no one "on the side of the angels" dies.  If they were to do, I think the most likely candidates would be people who aren't necessarily needed longer according to ACD canon, which puts Molly and Mary in the crosshairs.

FWIW, I don't necessarily think Moffat's comment that S4 was going to be "devestating" means that any of our characters will die.  I found HLV to destroy me pretty thoroughly, and no one died but CAM.  And as Mary so rightly pointed out, people like him need to.

Me too -- and I think it's fun to trace a conversation backwards through all the tangents. A lot of times, that's the only way I can recall the original topic.

I'm with you. No senseless deaths, please! And no good-guy deaths unless the story absolutely demands it. (Not sure I trust Moffat to interpret that as strictly as I meant it, though!)

Right -- the storyline required CAM's death, because nothing else would have saved his future victims. And I agree, "devastating" doesn't have to mean a beloved character's death. Moftiss have already demonstrated that at least twice. So I'm planning to fasten my seatbelt for the S4 finale!

For all we know they mean devastatingly funny!

There's something of the mockingbird about Molly -- killing her off would be a sin! :D And offing Mary so soon after introducing her would be tough to pull off without seeming cheesy, methinks. (I always felt the death of

Sirius Black

was a waste of a decent dramatic moment, simply because it occurred before we had a chance to get to know the character. Can't miss what we never had, and all that.)

Where does this conviction that Moftiss will kill someone off come from? Is it just Dr. Who? (Which I haven't seen enough of, alas, to really know what I'm referring to.) Or does it run through all their works? (I assume they HAVE other works...)

Posted

Yes his death happened too soon. I think the conviction comes from the fact that they have done it before and in canon Mary apparently dies at some point so someone's got to go.

I think it's partly from Doctor Who, but I've seen very few of those new eps, so have no opinion of my own on that point.  Other than that -- well, Sherlock has already "died" three times, and S4 is being billed as "devastating" -- so it seems like simple extrapolation to me.  And then there's the "of course Mary is going to die" canon thing (hell, we're all going to die!).  But hopefully Moftiss have more imagination than any of that!

I agree that your spoilered character died too soon.  I was very fond of him, and would have loved to see his story arc continue.

Wait, what? Three times? (Busily counts on fingers.) Oh no, I must've missed an episode!!!!

(I will presume you are referring to multiple heart stoppings in HLV .... altho as I keep pointing out, his brain was functioning fine the whole time, so ....)

Actually, I was counting:

1.  Falling off the roof of Bart's

2.  Being shot by Mary

3.  Being sent to his certain death in eastern Europe

And you will note that I put "died" in quotes.

So does that mean in the final episode of series 4 they will try to have Sherlock "die" 3 times.  Series 1, 0 death (only because Moriarty is so changeable and decided he didn't want to yet and the great cliffhanger); series 2, 1 death (that he survived and our epic cliffhanger of how); series 3, 2 deaths (he survived 1 & escaped before the 2nd really had a chance to happen because Moriarty (more like Moftiss)  decided to bug us).

So, a fake death, a near death, and a certain but aborted death, then! :D I finally understand why I sometimes see Sherlock drawn as a cat....

I can't speak for everyone, but sitting here in the U.S., I think it's "Downton Abbey Syndrome:"  the horrible fear that any time we start liking British TV broadcast on PBS, the creators will start summarily executing favorite characters.  :-)

OMG. I just remembered how sad I was when they offed the Michael Praed version of Robin Hood --- you're right, the British are trying to conquer the Americans with heartbreak!

So are they trying to slowly reclaim the colonies they lost 238 years ago and get us back under the crown?  ;)

My sister loves the UK & so wants to move there. I want to visit there again (been 15 yrs) & see more of the country.

Unfortunately it probably wouldn't help prevent any of the characters that we want to stay on the show from being taken out by the  known as Moftiss.
