Several threads on this forum were derived from Sherlockology, by the way -- especially those in the "News" subforum -- plus several posts on the Hobbit thread in the "Movies" subforum.

Since we all think so highly of Sherlockology, I'm pleased to say that they've won the Shorty Award for Best Fansite in Social Media, for the second year in a row!  Here's a video of two staff members accepting the award (and you can read more details at the link above).  Congratulations (and many thanks) to the entire Sherlockology staff!

From Sherlockology:

Just a little note  - two years ago today, we set up a little Twitter account named Sherlockology, which has grown into something that completely eclipses any expectations we may have had on May 11 2011.

So on what is effectively our second Birthday, we just wanted to say a big thank you to you and the hundreds of thousands of others who follow us on our social media accounts and on our website!

Now, we’re off to celebrate with lunch at Speedy's Cafe! Thanks everyone!

And my personal report from London:  Sherlockology posted the above this morning.  Alex & I just happened to be at Speedy's around noon today, and (unlike on our visit two years ago) noticed a number of other Sherlock fans there.  After reading the above this evening, I saw that one gal in our photos looks a good bit like the woman in my prior post.  If that actually was the Sherlockology staff I was chatting with -- darn! I wish I'd known!

Happy birthday, folks, and best wishes for many more!!!

Yes, that was them!  I got this reply to my email query:

Hi Carol,

Yes that was indeed us :) We were up London to go see Star Trek at the iMax and stopped in Speedy's for a birthday lunch (Sherlock Wrap). I think it was myself (Emma) who you had a quick convo with about the forum as I was asking if it was UK based.

Having been and looked at the forum we have indeed visited it before - there are so many it's hard to keep up with them all but after seeing the it we do know of it.

Hope you are enjoying your stay in London, How long are you over for?

-Team Sherlockology-

So I can testify that Sherlockology is made up of real people! And they're even a bit international -- the fellow I was mostly chatting with is originally from Indiana!

An amazingly small world, Carol.

Yes, apparently all roads lead to (or perhaps it's from) Indiana!

(Did you know there's even a CIA facility in Indiana?   :D  )

This isn't about Sherlockology, but another helpful resource site, and I didn't want to start a thread just for sharing a link with you:

Aithine has Blu-ray screencaps. ALL of the screencaps. Seriously. Go look.

She's sportingly willing to share if you give her credit, too, and even okay with hotlinking if it's just a few pics.

Wow, Martina -- thanks for that information!  I think someone posted a link to this site (or a similar one) before, but I don't recall where.  I've renamed this thread, so that we now have a place to post helpful links.

When you say "ALL of the screencaps," you're exaggerating only a little.  It looks like Aithine has The Pilot divided into 17 sections, with 21 pages per section, and 49 caps per page, which works out to something like 17,000 caps for 60 minutes of program.  That's almost 300 caps per minute, or 5 per second.  I believe that television has 30 frames per second, so her sampling rate is roughly every sixth frame.  Amazing!

Here's another resource that I use frequently -- Ariane DeVere's meticulously accurate and detailed episode transcripts.  She's done all six of the aired episodes and the pilot.  She's also done semi-transcripts of the DVD commentaries, and a few other things that have caught her fancy (e.g., Cabin Pressure transcripts).

Added March 2021:  Ariane has added transcripts of a couple other shows ahead of Sherlock on that list, so you'll need to scroll down a little way.

This isn't a resource, just a tidbit that might come in useful for fan writers.

Despite the common fan use of the term "St. Bart's," the hospital is never referred to that way in the show (including the pilot).  In dialog (Mike Stamford, John, and Sherlock) it's always just "Bart's."  The only other on-screen reference (aside from signs on the hospital itself) is Sherlock's text to Moriarty near the end of "Reichenbach," in which he refers to it as "Bart's Hospital."

I was able to determine this fairly quickly by using Ariane DeVere's transcripts (see my previous post) and my browser's Find function.

I suppose strictly speaking, St Bart's would be the church around the corner from the hospital itself.

There are actually 2 Saint Bartholomew's churches, within a short distance of the hospital, well St Bart's the Less is actually within the grounds of the hospital and is the official hospital church - so says wiki at least.

I believe that "the Less" is in the courtyard through the archway to the left of "the" phone booth.

The hospital is also named St. Bartholomew's, of course.  It would be interesting to know what the parishioners call the churches.

I am so confused about the whole Speedy's thing. Is that an actual place now?

It always was.  They did trick it up as "Mrs. Hudson's Snax & Sarnies" for the pilot, but that was apparently just to cover the Speedy's signs (similar to the way they cover actual street signs and real-estate signs when filming).  But Speedy's is an actual cafe, and the food is very nice.

It's not actually on Baker Street, of course, it's on North Gower, just a short distance north of the Euston Square tube station.

That tube-station sign can occasionally be seen in episodes, by the way.  (Imagine that you're the camera, and you're standing in the street directly in front of #221, and facing it.  Now turn 90 degrees to your left so that you're facing down the street to the south.  See the round sign just slightly to your left?)  This could be considered a continuity error, since the only tube station that close to where they've imagined the real #221 to be is the Baker Street station, and it's north of that location, not south.

So did you finally understand it?  I know it's confusing, or rather, hard to explain in words.

I'd much rather have hand-drawn a couple of simple maps, but frankly didn't care to take the time to figure out how to do a halfway legible job of it with Paint or something.  Hmm, let me try doing the maps by using the keyboard (north is at the top in each case, and the vertical streets are North Gower and Baker):

North Gower as seen in filming . . . The actual 221 Baker (as interpreted by Moftiss)

Actually that time was worse. And yes, London is one of those places where even the people who live there don't know how to get anywhere, and The people who do know how to get places are usually spies.

Posted

Oh well, it wasn't really important anyhow.  Just that on Sherlock, the (presumably) Baker Street tube station isn't where it really should be.

Odd, though.  I've never had much trouble finding my way around London.  Of course, I'm from the Midwest, where we're apparently born with a pretty good sense of compass directions (unlike, say, people from Boston).  And I have a really good little pocket map book, The Handy London Map & Guide by Bensons Mapguides.  (Maybe that's what the spies use.)
