Yes, thanks, Helene!

Here's the same news from Sherlockology, but with a photo from the Awards event (and click on that link to see more photos):

Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed that he and co-star Martin Freeman have signed up for a fourth series of the BBC1 detective drama.

“We’ve agreed to two more series but I’m probably going to get into trouble for saying that,” said Cumberbatch at the South Bank Show Awards this afternoon.

“All I know at the moment is I’m doing these three and another three.”

The star added that he would like the show to continue beyond a fourth series but admitted it would depend on whether he, Freeman and co-creator Steven Moffat, who is also showrunner on Doctor Who, could find the time to do it.

“It just depends on Martin and I’s availability, how long we can keep it going. It depends on Steven’s ability. I’d love to keep it going.”

Yup another six episodes a pretty good offering. Can we hope since they have signed up, Season Four will not be an 18 plus month wait?

Posted

Considering they got given the go ahead for S3 at the same time as S2 (but didn't tell anyone until S2 was airing), I expect we'll have another wait.

Posted

Yeah, that should keep us busy!

I hadn't tapped into fandom yet when they were doing series 2 -- were they posting goodies on the internet then like they are now?

I don't really remember, I only got bitten by the fandom bug as the 2nd series aired. I loved Sherlock from the first episode, but not having a background with the source material and also feeling a bit wary of fandom in general at the time I didn't pay much attention to what was going on.

As you've probably gathered, I've made up a bit for lost time.

Same here. I had been a fan in my own way starting with "A Study in Pink," and my husband and I were both sufficiently enamored of the show to pre-order the region 2 DVD for series 2. But series 2 hit me really hard (especially "The Reichenbach Fall"), and I started looking for a good forum.

Now I'm planning to go stick post-it notes on a phone booth in London.

I started watching them on PBS and was wowed by how well they could modernize them and yet stay close to the Canon. As soon as the DVDs were released I was all over them. Then I got interested in the Undershaw Trust project and started buying every book they listed. Then came the Forum hunt. I'm saving my pennies for a trip to London in 2015.

I don't know how to post vids here but there is an interview with Benedict on Facebook and it seems they may be backtracking on the news about Season 4. According to this news nothing is written in stone as yet. I just checked and this interview can also be found on Sherlockology. Have to scroll down a bit to find it, it's on the right hand side of the screen.

From Sherlockology: Benedict Cumberbatch has made another public statement, clarifying his prior remarks about a Series 4.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-D_FtB6J2jM&feature=player_detailpage

His South Bank comments were apparently either misunderstood, misquoted, or taken out of context. In this video, he says (among other things):

I never said that we'd agreed to do anything.

We genuinely don't know if there's going to be a fourth season.

Mark texted me ... "Well, it's news to me, dear!"

That really is too bad, especially since Moffat and Gatiss have both said that they would like to see this series continue well into these actors 40's and 50's.

Please bear in mind that no one has said there will not be a fourth series -- merely that (as with most things in this life) there's no guarantee.

I suspect that if Series 3 is well received, the BBC will be perfectly happy to commission another go-round.

So keep calm, and watch for more production tidbits. ;)

True, and one thing that writers, producers, and such, and Moffat and Gatiss have demonstrated this time and time again, is anyone especially fans, trying to second guess them. And in no way are they happy if actors or others linked to their shows seem like their giving away to much.

With "too much" apparently being defined as "anything at all."

Gads! I remember what happened to the actor who played Darth Vader. He gave an interview early on and said some things that George Lucas took as being way to much about the movie. The man still got to play the part but never again was he given a speaking role.

Apparently Mr. Cumberbatch isn't the only one who's misspoken -- just found this on RadioTimes:

Sherlock stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were the first to know there would be a fourth series of the BBC1 detective drama, says co-creator Steven Moffat – even before himself or the BBC's commissioners...

"We had to inform the BBC that Martin and Benedict had commissioned a new series," said Moffat.

"They signed themselves up. They both announced that they were carrying on – so that’s good.

"Benedict, at some red carpet event somewhere, said he was carrying on forever. Martin, at another one, said, ‘Yep, series four is happening’."

But if the two stars were operating slightly outside their remit as actors, Moffat is relatively confident that the BBC will go along with them just this once...

"The BBC can do what they like," he said. "They're massively powerful, don't provoke them! But I assume that unless we've really screwed up Sherlock [series three] – which we haven't – it's a big success and it will carry on, so long as Benedict and Martin want to do it."

Fans are still awaiting Sherlock series three almost two years after the season-two cliffhanger finale was first screened, with an official air date yet to be announced. And while Moffat admitted he himself did not know for sure when it would be broadcast, he did say "I would place good money on it being at the very end or the very beginning of the year."

Steven Moffat was speaking at a Radio Times-sponsored event at the Cheltenham Literature Festival

And a similar item from Sherlockology's blog, with some added thoughts:

Are Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman plotting more Sherlock without asking the BBC? (Picture: Hartswood Films/BBC)
