I have no idea what may be in that special, but I'm sure some of you have ideas. Tell me what you think Mark and Steve have cooking up.

Judging by S3, something that'll make me go,

You do realize we have 18 months to wait for it and probably 2 years for the other three.  BC is performing Hamlet from August-October in 2015, so probably they won't shoot SHERLOCK until afterwards unless he has a 3-4 month open time block before.

It takes...what...3 months to shoot each episode. They said filming would start January 2015? So the special runs until March. Then April, May and June for the 1st regular episode. Then they have to break so BC can do his Hamlet...then resume filming in November?  They did that with the Hobbit....so no reason why that can't work around the play.

Based on the Series 3 filming schedule, it took them about 3 months to film three episodes, so about a month of filming per episode.

Or a little more -- they might need as much as four months of the actors' time for three episodes.

But as Fox pointed out, they didn't film Series 3 all in one chunk -- so if there isn't time to film the next four before BC's Hamlet commitment, they could do them one or two at a time.  One way or another, I expect they'll be done filming by the end of next year, with the Special ready to air during the holidays, and the rest sometime in 2016.

It's a month filming each episode and a month post production.

No, the filming of series 4 will run into 2016 and it will be aired at some point that year.

We may be talking apples and oranges, Bev.  When I said "filming" back there, I meant literally just the filming.  Post-production definitely takes additional time, but fortunately it can be done even when the actors are off doing something else (like Hamlet).

Alex just looked up BC's Hamlet schedule, and there will be performances from 6 August through 31 October.  Assuming that they have a similar schedule to MF's Richard III, rehearsal will account for the month of July.  They'll be filming the Special from sometime in January, possibly into February.  So that leaves March through June -- four months when they might be able (depending on everyone's other schedules) to film Series 4.  And November - December might also be a possibility.

They just need to get the filming schedule nailed down now (if they haven't already), before everybody makes other plans.

My hope is that they will start filming the three Series 4 episodes in Spring 2015 and keep filming until Benedict Cumberbatch needs to rehearse for Hamlet in July.  Then May-June is looking good for our next UK trip, which will probably last about one month, since I will move up to 5 weeks of vacation next year. :D

Sorry to be ignorant, but what's that -- a remake of the movie?  Oops, no, I see it's something called The Lost City of Z -- based on the true story of a British surveyor looking for a mythical lost city of the Amazon.  IMDb categorizes it as "in development," so they won't say more unless I'm willing to pay for their "Pro" level.  But Wikipedia gives some background.

If BC is filming that next spring and early summer, then maybe Hartswood really meant what they said about filming Series 4 "later" in the year -- like starting in November and running into 2016.

According to Cumberbatchweb, Sherlock series 4 is filming in "late 2015", so that looks like November-December. :(

As I fully expected.

I guess we wait however long we wait. I will make sure to only participate in low risk activities until the final episode of series 5 is aired. Yes I think for the most part I'm serious.

Wonder if the late filming of series 4 is why they decided on the special for 2015... to avoid keeping the fandom waiting for 3+ years.

Ah well, at least the last Hobbit movie airs in December, and The Imitation Game in February (in Denmark). Looking forward to see my favorite actors. Meanwhile, got lots of catching up to do on their previous movies. Especially BC is such a delight!

... or writers either, I think.  (I sometimes wonder whether Hartswood may be putting more of the delay on the actors than is fully warranted.)

I think if the holiday story is 'The Blue Carbunkle' - Stephen & Mark will do an amazing twist on the story.
