Split off from another thread:

I know what you're getting at; except for the way he's dressed, I don't think Tom looks anything like Sherlock. But apparently other people do. (Can you imagine the casting call for that role? "Wanted; 6 foot actors who look like Benedict Cumberbatch.")

It took me an embarrassingly long time to even get the joke, so little do I think Tom looks like Sherlock.  Heck, I can put any man in a beautiful coat and tie a scarf around his neck, but it won't make him look like Sherlock.

I do sort of pity the casting job on this one, and its a tribute to the fantastic amount of job security BC's unique look gives him.  There's just no one who looks like him, so casting "tall, thin, with curly hair" doesn't really do it.

I managed to somehow get the joke, but outside of how he dresses and maybe height, I agree that Tom doesn't look anything like Sherlock.

I got the joke right off, but I don't think Tom was supposed really to look like Sherlock, just bear some sort of general resemblance to him -- height, build, coloring, clothing -- to imply that's why Molly likes him.  And I don't think it's any accident that he's kinda geeky, because a] that might explain why their friends fixed him and Molly up, and b] it makes him seem like "the poor man's (woman's?) Sherlock Holmes."

Yes, that's pretty much it. He's a pretty sorry substitute, and as such, no wonder he was ditched pretty fast when the real thing came back to life...

Aside from that, which I don't even find very funny (for some odd reason, I think this joke is a little disrespectful towards Molly, of all people), Tom is a clue to what is the deal with Mary. Seriously, I think they meant it that way. There is so much foreshadowing on this show. And Molly uses the very words John did when first telling Mrs Hudson about Mary: "I'm moving on" / "I have moved on". And then later, it turns out he hasn't (either), because Mary is "like that", even though she wasn't supposed to be, in John's opinion.

(And this is another instance where John and Sherlock's screwy friendship is more or less directly compared to a romantic relationship. So I think the writers can really shut up now about the "absurdity" of some fans drawing similar parallels on their own. If you don't want that interpretation at all, you have to come up with some other scripts. I mean it. I am not "a shipper", but I resent an author first yanking his audience's chain and then laughing at them for letting themselves be pulled along.)

Oooops, how did we get from A Scandal in Belgravia to Tom?

Wow, I never saw that comparison, but now that you've put it in my brain .... I still don't. :P But I agree about the jerking of the chain. That's the kind of thing that's only funny once (if then.) Having said that, though, have Moftiss ever denied what you call the "romance" part of their relationship? (What I would call the "friendship" part.) They've denied -- well, Moffat has, I haven't seen where Gatiss has addressed the topic -- denied that Sherlock and John are gay. Not quite the same thing as denying their relationship, whatever it is. But yeah, they're still jerks for jerking our chains. :D

My fault, I'm afraid. Shall I see him to the door?

There's no perfect place to put him, I'm afraid, since he was in two episodes.  I'm gonna ponder the question while I eat supper -- be back later!

Okay, we're really getting desperate now .... TOM has his own thread?

Posted

And, since he does have his own thread, some theories about Tom (these are not mine...)

1. He's the other one.

2. He's Moran.

3. He's MI6.

4. He's the body double Molly used to fake Sherlock's death. (???)

Oh my, can you imagine poor Molly if he turned out to be Moran after Jim from IT was Moriarty.  lol

Oh, and how could he have been the body double?  Death by fork at a wedding?

I'm thinking resurrected by Molly. Zombie Tom!

Which might also explain why she finally broke it off with him. He was too grave....

How can Tom be Moran? Wasn't Moran the guy who tried to blow up parliament & was one of the "rats" Sherlock was keeping an eye on?

Me, I find Tom creepy. I actually found him really creepy since his first appearance, probably either because he was dressed like Sherlock but wasn't Sherlock, or because of this:

Exactly, Bendy. Moran!

Camper, I think the theory is, that's a different Moran, to throw the fans off the scent...... (As if Moftiss would, ever!!!!)

Off topic, but there's actually a teenager out there who looks quite like Benedict Cumberbatch, believe it or not.

Oh yeah, him. I've never found the resemblance all that close, actually. Closer than the guy who plays Tom, though.

Yeah! Somebody thinks that Tom's Moran's son, and that Tom was the guy Moriarty used to scare the little girl in TRF -- and don't say "But Moriarty killed him!" because Sherlock's "confession" to Anderson was disproved!

I don't think Tom is supposed to look like Sherlock all that much, he's just supposed to want to look like him. I have this theory that he really loved Molly and wanted to be with her, and of course he knew or soon found out who her big crush was, so he tried to look / be like him to please her.

Poor Tom. I feel very sorry for him. Molly is no saint, for all her loveliness, and she didn't seem to be too nice about him. I am pretty sure it was she who left him, too, and not the other way around.

Poor Tom.

(My theory is probably totally not what they had in mind when they wrote this, if they had anything in mind at all beyond a joke, but who cares)

For Molly's sake, I hope Tom doesn't prove to be any of those other characters, it's just too much to have her always dating people who turn out to be ... uh, psychopaths. She's awkward, not self-destructive! (Or Lord, please tell me Moftiss didn't hear that, I don't want to put ideas in their funny little heads....)

Quick, go say she is self-destructive in the crazy rumors thread!
