I don't see that Sherlock sees John that way actually. Yes, it was mentioned a couple of times, especially regarding Mary, but always thought that it's excuse that I don't buy and just a forced justification.

At least in the beginning I thought Sherlock sees John as more of moral, outsourced conscience. That John sees the unfortunate part of murders, symphatize with the victims (Jennifer Wilson, blind old lady) while Sherlock sees them as puzzle pieces because he needs to. So I thought Sherlock thinks that John is attracted to case because of purpose, to help make right, therefore John wants Sherlock to be the hero because he can. He does enjoy running around jumping from rooftop to rooftop, but not just because John likes the thrill of jumping, but the purpose of jumping. If John were interested that much in danger, he would put himself in many situations more carelessly more often. Other than raiding the drug house, I don't remember any other scenarios where he purposely seek dangerous situation when he doesn't have to.

View Halloa everybody . . I'm still in this mortal coil; just been busy this summer.  I am a children's librarian--summer is to us what Christmas shopping season is the the mall retailies.  Been there, done that, too.  Summer drags on a bit longer but at least I'm not on my feet *all* day.

Catching up on some old notifications and was directed here.  Just wanted to second J.P.s comment that Watson as an 'outsourced conscience' is a wonderful phrase & all the more so because VBS is writing in her second language, I believe?  (or third or fourth--we have some impressive polyglotals in this community.)

Now I'm getting a vision of Martin Freeman as 'Jiminy Cricket', balanced on the shoulder of a sulky Benedicchio in a grown-up version of my favorite Disney story.   Or perhaps 'Jiminy' is a hedghog perched on the shoulder of 'Pinocchiotter'.

I wish I could draw it  . . any of you that can, feel free to run with that idea and post it on Tumblr; just be sure to show me!

Alas, "Irongeppetto" is the best I can rustle up.... (apparently RDJ is/was to be in a Pinocchio movie?)

Happened to come across this old post (while looking for something else), and find it interesting:

RE: the theory you mentioned, Pseud, I'm amazed, but I actually managed to come up with the name. It's called the EMP Theory, which confused me no end when I first encountered it, because there used to be an EMP (electro-magnetic pulse) research station near here, and I'm going "EMPs and Sherlock??? wtf???"

Ahem. Anyway, it stands for Extended Mind Palace theory. I've glanced at it a few times and to me it's even more unfounded than TJLC, but hey. There seems to be several different versions, but the essence of it is: everything that happens after Sherlock gets shot by Mary takes place in his mind palace. Some people seem to have backed it up to everything after TRF is in his mind palace. The whole point of the theory (imo) is to wish away anything that gets in the way of TJLC (i.e., Mary's existence). But to be fair, I run screaming in the other direction every time I encounter it, so there may be more to it than that.

And our "rival" forum has this. I haven't read any of it; those people scare me. Enter at your own risk. :D

I've read some of those linked-to items, and find them interesting -- not because I'm a TJLCer myself, but rather because I'm still bewildered by what feels to me like a major disconnect between seasons 1 & 2 and seasons 3 & 4, most especially episodes 3.3 and 4.3.  I am in general no fan of "it was all a dream" stories, but if I can make exceptions for Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz, I guess I can make one more for Sherlock.

I may even choose to rewatch the show (for the first time in years), keeping this idea in mind, and see what I think then.
