Is this from a behind the scenes interview?

Looks like he's trying to blend into the wall. Obviously missing his camo.

Funny how we start to take Mofftiss into the discussion about characters. Gives an extra meta-level to the whole thing. :D

Maybe Sherlock is kind of attracted to Irene, but he's also aware that a real relationship would never work, as they are not made for this. So he keeps her in his MP as a nice what-if, instead of ruining it by trying to make it real.

As for John - I don't think he sees through Sherlock or knows him inside out. I don't think John needs to know Sherlock to be his friend.

However, one of the impressions I have had that was strengthened by the Eurus story in S4 is that Sherlock is only pushing people away on Mycroft's advice and as a way of avoiding getting hurt, not because he is disinterested in human connection or that he can't relate on any level but the intellectual.

Yep. I always found it odd that Sherlock, who supposedly "didn't need people", was practically bounding around John like a puppy when they first met at 221B. He seemed so eager for John to move in, and invited him to go crime-solving ... someone who doesn't want friends doesn't go around so openly inviting strangers into their lives, do they? So I've assumed from the start that his seeming misanthropy was just a cover, to protect himself from rejection. S4 just confirmed it for me.

I hope not, he looks rather hurt or bitter. Also it looks like he's saying "I'm just your friend." ???? But I can't place it in the context of any episode, either, so I don't know what else it could be.

It could be an edited out scene, but it's the looking directly at the camera that throws me.

I don't think Sherlock wants to be alone or that he isn't interested in making friends, I just don't think sex is important to him other than how it factors into the work. For John, I think Sherlock was happy to invite him in because a) he supposedly needed a flatmate (I'm still a bit dubious about this), and b) John was actually impressed by him and nice to him. When we first meet Dimmock Sherlock is initially pleasant and polite and gets immediately shot down. Doesn't he try to shake Dimmock's hand and get refused? I get the impression that happens a lot, that either Sherlock's reputation proceeds him or he accidentally says something that people find offensive. I don't think he shuns friendship, it's just that it's more trouble than it's worth since most people aren't going to be willing to put up with the more abrasive aspects of his personality. Even John in struggling with some of it as early as TBB.

I would just like to add that such could be true whether you think Sherlock is romantically or sexually interested in anyone or not.

I don’t think we ever see a Sherlock altogether disinterested in human connection. He’s certainly interested in his connection with John.

Okay, I just ran across this, (source) and it gave me pause:

“It’s always belonged to you. Will you keep it safe?” (Pirates of the Caribbean - At World’s End)

After watching “At World’s End” the other day and after hearing this sentence I now have the serious headcanon that Irene asked Sherlock to get her phone back from the British government and to keep it safe when they last saw each other in Karachi.

She asked Sherlock to keep her heart safe from harm. And he still has her heart. Think about that.

Okay, I've thought about it. I have to admit, that's a pretty good headcanon. Makes me wonder if John mightn't be on to something after all!

I had a quote (from Arcadia?) selected, regarding the supposed calming effects of tobacco -- but my cellphone apparently ate it (and darned if I'm gonna hunt back through the last three pages).

Anyhow, my impression is that smoking a cigarette calms your nerves only if you're already addicted. In other words, you were antsy because you needed a fix, and smoking provided the fix, thus relieving your jangling nerves.

Aha! Next time a smoker tries to justify their smoking by telling me it's relaxing, I'll hit them up with your impression and see what happens. Maybe I'd better learn to duck first, eh?

Is anyone else having quirky little problems with the forum? Like the post I just made above ... I've corrected it now, but when I first posted it, for some reason the last sentence was formatted differently than the rest of the post. That's about the 3rd-4th time that's happened.

And almost every time I start a new post, the space bar seems to think it's the "page down" button until I tap on the cursor a few times. Incredibly annoying.

And I had a "quote" disappear on me too recently, Carol, although I still suspect user error on that one.

Anyway, has anyone else noticed similar peculiarities? It started within the past 2-3 days, around the time Windows downloaded a major upgrade. I is suspicious.

I haven't had any issues.

I tried Googling Ariane DeVere's transcripts, and apparently the only time John says that exact line is in Hounds, but that was at the Inn. Judging by John's changeable hairstyle, this gif is from Series 3. So all we need is a list of kitchen scenes from S3. :D And/or episodes where John wore that shirt.

Not sure of the shirt or the camera angle, but could it be the eyeball scene? John did say that several people were not his best friend.

Nope, definitely not that one. John was sitting, and on the other side of the table, facing the other way, and wearing a jacket.

It seems like an interview shot... he’s looking too directly into the camera for it to be a scene from the show.

I think this is the shirt in ASiB, but no matching kitchen scene.

There’s also this, so maybe it was filmed during a photo shoot?

I agree it looks more like an interview, but he's so rueful! Maybe he was recreating a scene, or something.

I note he's wearing a shirt that might be green in TEH, but he's got a grey jumper over it.

And now it looks to me like he might be saying "why would you" something.

Maybe it's a scene from the secret 4th episode of S4?

Not unless he secretly reverted to his S3 hairstyle.

Did some searching, and according to internet peeps, it is from the Sherlock: The Network mobile app (there's an app?!?).  In the scene, John is recalling Sherlock's fall and death in TRF.

More from the gif set:

Awww, apparently the app was not upgraded to work on new operating systems and was removed from app stores.  It's no longer available for download in the US, UK, Canada, or Australia (possibly other places as well).  That's a shame, it looks like fun.  I'm jealous of the people who got to play!

By the way, Arcadia, I've been having loading problems on the forum for the last few days.  I haven't had a Windows update lately though, and same trouble on my iPad.

So he's in character talking to his blog readers? Interesting.

Ooo, there's a load of them. Watching my way though. :D

Oooo thanks!  I'm parched for new "Sherlock" material, lol.  (Well, new to me, anyway.)

Wah!!! I was all set to buy an iPhone just for this! (Yay, saved from myself....) It looks so cool....

And now that I've complained about it, mine's working fine again. Oh, but there was another upgrade last night ... aha.

By loading problems, do you mean the time it takes to load a new page? Anyone else experiencing it?

Same here! Sherlock at his snarkiest! I love it!

Oh drat, I spoke too soon earlier ... now my space bar's acting up again. Okay, I'm blaming the hardware now......

What kind of loading problems, Artemis? Pick an example, tell us what you're trying to do, and then tell us what actually happens.

Yeah, sometimes the page won't load, or loads a tiny bit and then gets stuck.  Especially the home page.  I haven't had a problem since I said that though, so maybe it's okay now.

Has anyone ever worked out how long John was in the Army? I suppose it partly depends on whether we assume he's a trauma surgeon in this version or not.
