Now that I'm back, I'm still out of my depth. 

In fact, I don't know if I ever in my depth. What is depth again?

Not lumber mill, second picture is close, something similar with a smith.

These two things are related, they explain a place with a concept.

I think it is a kind of open air museum dedicated to the Gold Fever. The second pic shows the place where gold was melted into gold bars.

It is an actual mining town, preserved as it is, dedicated to historical milestone, Victorian gold rush. Open air museum indeed.

 

Visitors can learn about gold bar making (sharp eyes btw) or even try their hands in finding gold chuncks.
