Star Trek Beyond ... and beyond

The makers don't ship them - obviously.

It would be just giving in to what a group of fans wish.

And it would make absolutely no sense in the ST universe - the older versions of Spock and Kirk are obviously not in any kind of romantic relationship in the original show.

And it would screw up the fundamental Kirk-Spock dynamic to make them a couple.

 

Now, as you all know, I'm congenitally unable to see any hint of slash in TV shows, apparently.  But I was watching the BBC America Star Trek:TOS marathon this weekend in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, and I kept hearing Spock make comments about his loyalty to "that man on the bridge" and the like.  And so help me, for the first time ever, I was like:

Really? The grumbling, Luddite who is afraid of a transporter even in old age, a down-to-earth what? His most famous one-liner, quite apart from his constant bickering with Spock/Mycroft, is "I am a doctor, not a brick-layer"!

... I was watching the BBC America Star Trek:TOS marathon this weekend in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Star Trek....

I think it's weird enough that BBC America keeps running Next Generation several times a day -- but at least that captain is played by a British actor.  Why the heck are they running an Original Series marathon?  I could understand the BBC running it in the UK, assuming nobody else is running it there.  But here?  What with all the wonderful programs that the BBC has sponsored over the years, why in heavens name does BBC America devote so much time to American programming -- in America?

 

Oh, wait -- Shatner and Doohan are Canadian.  Maybe that's it!  ;)

And they cordially disliked each other off set, while working fine on set, at least until James Doohan's demise.

Arcadia dear, you should get the Captain's Logs for the first three series (Original, Next Generation and Deep Space Nine), although they must be out of print by now, together with Shatner's works and Nimoy's autobiography.

Not if that's the kind of thing that's in them! Not really interested in the "inside scoop", I was just surprised that Doohan was Canadian, because I'd heard that Shatner was, but not Doohan. I like Canada, so I guess my ears always perk up when I hear it mentioned.

Progress on the fourth reboot movie has hit a serious snag.

Altho if it's no better than the 3rd one, I don't really mind. I loved the first two but number three … bleh.

Until this moment I didn't realize Hemsworth was Kirk senior. Seems like it'd be easy enough to recast him.

True, I think -- even though he really is just about perfect in the role.

Pine, though -- in my opinion, they better honor the contract, or they don't have a movie.  Added: Playing cheapskate to the point of losing Pine could kill the whole reboot.

After all, it's not (generally) the actor's fault if the movie doesn't show a profit. 

Interesting, isn't it, how versions of Star Trek keep proliferating. Why that and not, say, Bonanza or MASH, both of which were a lot more successful. Guess Roddenberry hit on the magic formula. (Wagon Train, of all things. 😄 )

That, and picked good people to help him.  I've probably said.before that I don't think he ever really understood the show.  The episodes he wrote tend to be among the weakest, and his concept of Spock was merely a guy with pointed ears.  If his basic concept hadn't been considerably fleshed out by others like Dorothy Fontana, Gene Coon, Joseph Sergeant, and of course the actors, I doubt that we'd even remember it as a flash in the pan.

I don't think they're blaming either of the actors.  Their rationale seems to be that they can't afford to keep paying them the contractual amount, because the movies haven't been doing well.

But if they cut Pine, there goes the revenue they would have gotten from attendance by his huge fan base.  In which case they'd probably be well advised to just cancel the whole project right now.

What I suspect will happen is that Pine and the studio will each do their obligatory posturing for s while longer, then each will (publicly or privately) make certain concessions, and the show will go on.

Bad enough that the movie will be the first without Spock Prime, Chekov, and Majel Barrett's  computer voice.

I wasn't sure if I should comment that with the Haha or the Sad reaction emoji. Maybe both. But yeah, if they recast either Pine or Urban, I for one am out too (didn't much like the last movie either, besides).

I like their Trekverse and main cast, don't much care for the plots so far and/or had trouble finding them amidst all the bigger-faster-louder.

I love Uhura. I'll miss Chekov. I enjoy the others, esp. Scotty, I think they updated them all quite nicely … except Sulu. Somehow he doesn't register with me at all. Plot? Eh, who cares about plot, I just like space opera. 😛  But I agree the problem with the last one was it was just too dang frenetic and loud; took the grandeur of space out of it. And I've never liked planet-bound stories as well as space-bound ones, for some reason. Maybe because it takes the grandeur of space out of it...…

Even though I like Simon Pegg's character, I just can't think of him as Scotty, whereas Sulu is a bit different from the original, but close enough to suit me.

Agreed that he's different from the original, but Simon Pegg is such a delight I don't care. 

TBH, the two versions of Star Trek exist in different universes in my head. (Actually, that's what they established at the beginning of the first reboot, isn't it? No wonder. )  At any rate, for some reason I have no problem accommodating the variations between the two versions. I don't even prefer one to the other, I don't think … they're simply different entities. Does that make sense? I gather some of the long-time Trekkies were rather … offended? annoyed? … by some of the changes, and when I first heard about the reboot, I figured I would be too … but then I saw it, and I'm not.

I'm trying to think of other examples of universes that have been reimagined that way, but I'm drawing a blank … but if there is one, I'd be curious to know if I'd feel the same way about it. There must be something, why can't I think of it? Aggh, the brain is going....

I never liked the plant-bound stories either except in one episode of Star Trek: Voyager.  Please give me the space-bound episodes plus STID.

Well, I have to walk my statement back a bit, because there was City on the Edge of Forever, and Devil in the Dark. Oh, and Amok Time. And that crazy gangster planet one. All great episodes. But generally speaking, I prefer being on the ship.

I was typing this when you posted yours:

A lot of my favorite Original Trek episodes take place wholly or mostly on planets -- City on the Edge of Forever, Piece of the Action, Devil in the Dark, Requiem for Methuselah, ...

... and i was just about to look for a  complete episode list to jog my memory when I got the "Arcadia has replied" notice.  Spooky, huh?
