Photobucket WAS an alternative, but now the pages are so script and advert heavy that you'd get old before you upload anything. I was there from the beginning and the beginning was nice and very simple. Now it's big and it's a mess. Considering using my Wordpress account for posting pics, because Tinypic s*cks too, with all that adverts and pop-ups, and they all look like being able to infect your comp with the worst kind of electronic pest.

Most of my pics are posted at a hidden Wordpress page on my site. I just grab the URL of the pic so the page doesn't take years to load as all the pics are on 1 post.

I see that now! Look at my great pose :)

Of course what entertains me the most is the effort and time Arcadia spent to look for that gif just to make fun of me. :D

Oh, there was no effort or time involved. I simply typed in "Van Buren Supernova acting normal" and that's what came up.

In the interest of complete honesty, it just occurred to me that I may never have actually smelt a durian.  I do know that I was warned about the smell when I was first introduced to the fruit, and consequently I've always held my breath till each spoonful was in my mouth (for some reason, it doesn't smell bad once it's in there).

So the "sewer" description may have come from the person who first warned me, rather than from my own perceptions.  Not that I'm planning to smell one now!

Well, I have actually smelled one, and sewer is an apt description.

Oh, and none of those responses are encouraging me to switch from Imgur. :(

Wait.. maybe it's just figure of speech. You don't actualy use spoon to eat durian right? :p Just in case.

The opinion if someone who is too chicken to actually taste it. Nyah nyah nyah. XD

I am pissed with Tinypic too. Not sure how to use Wordpress. But I've been trying PostImage, simple and seems to work well, although sometimes I forget and go to Tinypic based on habit.

I was looking at my Excel interface, and thinking of this.

images-15.jpg

Does Gen Z or Post Millennials even know why this symbol is used as Save button? :p

Also, for old time sake, anyone else had murderous thought about Mr. Clippy, especially during sleepless nights with countless paperworks to do?

I've never met Mr. Clippy, where does (did?) he live?

Holy smoke! It happened again! Did you guys see it?

Bloody tinypic image changed to something else.

I have fixed and reupload the image using other image hosting.

Just now it looks like this.

@Arcadia. Not sure if you are joking :p.

Mr.Clippy appeared (in my experience, mostly in Words) as assistant, to help you, but it's more annoying than help.

Mr. Clippy looks familiar from somewhere.

And so does that save button. ;)

Haven't used Word in decades, must be a new innovation. Looks irritating, I feel like swatting him already.

I missed the Tinypic swap, how fun! :p

I wonder why tinypic never gives me a respectable swap, it's always weird/embarrasing pictures, make me wonder whether others always upload those private weird pictures in the net for all to see. Yikes. :p

I think Mr.Clippy is dead now.

He should be familiar for computer user around 90s and early 2000.

The save button, do new generation even know what floppy disk is and why is it used as save interface. Same thing as I always wonder whether they have ever questioned why we say hang up the phone when terminating a call.

What about this.. ring a bell?

Yup. Did you ever notice how in the one with the hand holding cards, a card would disappear and reappear every once in awhile? And the bats in the castle one flapped their wings.

The ones they have now are boring.

To take things back another generation, do you know why it's called a floppy disk?  I was trying to help someone over the phone, and asked if their system had a hard drive.  They said, yeah, they had a whole box of 'em.  I said no, those are floppy disks.  They were bewildered.

The floppy disk itself is basically a circular piece of the same sort of material that recording tape is make from.  It has no inherent rigidity, ergo it's "floppy."  It does however become rigid when rotated at high speeds, allowing it to be used in much the same way as a hard disk (which is made of rigid material with a magnetizable coating).  The original floppies were 8" disks enclosed in semi-flexible plastic housings which made them just a bit TOO floppy (I've heard of people folding them up and putting them in their pocket, which of course did not help their reliability).  Then the disks (which were still flexible) became smaller (about 3" as I recall) and the housing became completely rigid, but they were still called floppy disks.

As for "hanging up" to end a phone call, that's precisely what one did on many early phones.  Note that the receiver (earpiece) is literally hung on a hook at the left, while the mouthpiece is mounted to the door (which is shown open):

The first computer I ever used had two slots for floppy disks (the 8" kind.) You stuck the Windows disk in one, booted up, took that disk out, put in the program disk (such as Word), got that going, then inserted a blank disk into the second drive to save your files on.

The great thing about this system was it taught me early on 1) to save my files frequently and 2) how to keep track of them. It's second nature to me now. I know so many people who save their files to whatever the default is, then have no idea how to find them again.

@Hang up

That golden device actually gave more satisfaction when I terminated the phone angrily, I could slam the handset. On modern phone, well how much anger can I channel through a button press?.. XD

@Floppy disk

Yah.. the floppy 8" disks were so temporary looking, although I quite liked the thinness. 3" was much more sturdy and came with bigger capacity (1.44M if I remember correctly? :p) and wonderful sound when they were loading. I remember we had some kind of thicker version for rebooting or something?

And .lh12 anyone? It's the 'secret' code in Doc (?) for making 1.5 spacing because my teacher thought our lives were not difficult enough and made us do the paper in 1.5 spacing which was not common. $%%^#@

@Solitaire

I didn't notice the bat and card moving on those solitaire! I'd just used the coconut tree one and never changed it. Played Heart more than Solitaire, as Solitaire needs good amount of luck, while Heart needs more strategy. Always aimed to score 0 and make everyone pay for collecting Queen of Spades and all heart cards to get into victory faster. Bahahaha..

Talking about good old computer, the beautiful sound that I never forget is when we were finally connected to dial-up, after it was writhing as if in pain for trying to get on line. Was it ten, fifteen minutes at least? :p

My brother had some double sided 8" floppies. Then I remember when my dad had some double-sided 3" floppies. I also remember using the monitor as a TV set since ours was broken. Nothing like watching Rudolph with an apple IIe computer right below the TV set monitor.

Maybe they're used to programs that give the user no choice as to where the file will be saved, or what it will be called -- and don't even tell them where it's been hidden.  Gnnarrrff!!!

Which programs are those? Never heard of such a thing. Thankfully.

I just realized I've been using a mouse to navigate for so long that I can't remember how I designated the location to save files in. Typed in the path? Ugh. Sounds awful! I also realize I can't remember when I started using a mouse. How did we scroll before mice?

Posted

We didn't, we used DOS and typed everything in.

Nowadays, selecting a file is generally done by clicking on its name in a directory list.

And I don't recall what programs have done that to me. I don't really *want* to remember them.

Arrows or using - I think - ctrl and a key as a shortcut. TBH, I'm glad I didn't have to work with it. :D

And I remember Commodore 64 and Basic!

I didn't touch dos/windows computer until college before that I was on the Apple computers starting with the IIe then a Quadra, Macintosh se30, & a Performa before the various iMacs came about.

Right, good old DOS. I'll bet I couldn't even figure out how to use it, now.

Apples always had umm, mice, didn't they?

Nope (popped p and all) not sure when the mouse was introduced but the IIe's didn't have any. They were similar in format to dos.
