I'm trying to decide which would make me feel worse ... eating a durian or walking through a klong. Probably the latter, since I would drown.

You've never eaten a durian? They don't taste at all like they smell, you know -- I have no idea how they manage it, but the flavor is sort of fruity vanilla custard.

Yuppp, I like durian too. The setback is, I always have to drink some sort of saltwater after that otherwise I don't feel well.

If I get my hand into some, beside enjoy it as it is, I'd make it into durian puff (which is an absolute best seller, but I am not paid by those ungrateful customers who think sweet words are enough :p) and durian ice cream which can be absolute delight but could be difficult to get consistent texture.

The klongs I remember actually quite decent, I'd categorize it as 'clean' and it didn't smell too bad except of course, regular muddy smell with some questionable sources, but we could be on different area and obviously different era.

@Carol, the reason you hate asparagus?

I dislike the 'after processed' but other than that, it's pretty okay.

The reason I what? oh, I see, I think. Sorry, I meant that durian is nothing like asparagus, not that I don't like asparagus.

I'm actually fairly fond of sparagus, and find the after-smell sort of interesting. Did you know that "they" used to think that some people did not develop that odor in their urine -- but further investigation revealed that everybody's urine has a funny odor after they eat asparagus -- it's just that some people are genetically incapable of smelling it. And of course people don't generally go around smelling each other's urine. (Sherlock would be appalled at the stuff I carry around in my head!)

Actually, I hated asparagus when I was a kid. I hated eating morel mushrooms too, even though I loved hunting for them. And I hated eating brains (which my mother would try to hide in scrambled eggs). I believe the unifying factor was not the taste of any of those things, but rather the slimy texture. I now like asparagus (tbough preferably not boiled, the way my mother fixed it) and mushrooms, but would still draw the line at eating brains (eewww!) even if I were not a vegetarian.

I heard/read that, but the posssibility of different urine results from different people are still open, it's not conclusive yet. And you bring up good point, the reason why we smell durian differently is probably based in the same reason, that we have different smelling receptor/something like that, which also explain the valerian root case. Anyway, durian probably has one of the most complex smell scientifically.

Okay! Now I have to ask... eating brain???

What/whose brain? Which animal, and why???

I know it could be common somewhere, I've seen them in restaurant before. One of my uni classmate even claimed that his dad did the Indiana Jones thingy: whack a monkey and slurp the brain, but I never heard that it is good for children (which I assume that's why your mother fed you that).

Brain needs to be steamed first to coagulate the protein, sliced and then deep-fried to dry and firmed it up further. Not the healthiest food but it is delicious. Cow's.

Durian. There's an advice that has been passed from generation to the next that in order to avoid from getting the swimmy feeling on the head and the funny taste in stomach you must drink water that had been poured to the durian's skin (the inner white lining where the eatable part of the fruit used to rest).

The brains were very alike to scrambled eggs, but I think my mother added eggs for the texture. It was quite normal as I was kid, but in Germany I haven't seen it. Maybe it's because of BSE.

I believe what we had was pig's brains.  "Why" would presumably be, don't waste anything -- which would only make sense if we had slaughtered our own pig.  Mom just bought the disgusting things at the grocery store.

That might have made the brains quite palatable (especially if I didn't know what they were).

I don't recall ever having any sort of funny feeling after eating durian (and believe me, I can eat a *lot* of it!).  Maybe it's another one of those individual-difference things.

Yeah, I can't imagine that anyone is advocating using brains as food these days (though pig brains would be safer than cow brains, I suppose).

Do you like your scrambled eggs a bit on the runny side?  If so, then I could see why you say brains have a similar texture.  But we were accustomed to scrambling our eggs till they were fairly firm -- so when Mom added brains, it was really, really slimy and obvious.

I remember having my brains quite firm and not slimy at all.

How did you prepare them?  (Not that I have the slightest interest in making any.)

Well, so much for that discussion, then!  :D

Drop the thick slice of steamed brain into a bowl of seasoned flour mixed with scrambled egg, roll with breadcrumbs then deep fry it. In just a few minutes you have a slab of brain steak.

I know that's what they say. I know I never bit into one, although I seem to remember touching one with my tongue once. But I couldn't get past the smell. I was only 6, after all.

Yup, that's what we did, with a pinch of salt. But nowadays we hardy bought it with skin, pick it on spot then they'll scoop the flesh and put it in takeaway container. In that case I just have the saltwater with regular cup.:p

Of course it's best where we can eat it straight from the fruit.

Yup. Others I know don't have problem like that and it's fine for them.

Oh yes, I can eat a lot too. Tastyyy.

Geez, now we have a discussion about eating brains. Fine.

Yah. It feels like Hannibal, not Sherlock. XD Do I finaly have my wish to talk about Hannibal with you guys? :D

What would Helen Louise say?

I remember having my brains quite firm and not slimy at all.

@Arcadia, I can't since your images since yesterday. So I supposed it's just me trying to chase after giant chicken???

More like the chicken, normal sized, is chasing you.

Well, naturally. I wouldn't post a fake gif, would I?

Okay, do I need to switch from Imgur? I am deeply hurt that people can't enjoy my brilliant humor .... so which photo sharing site DOES work?

I see that now! Look at my great pose :)

Of course what entertains me the most is the effort and time Arcadia spent to look for that gif just to make fun of me. :D

P.S. I use tinypic, but it has tendency to switch the image into some other image, like what happened to me back then.

In the interest of complete honesty, it just occurred to me that I may never have actually smelt a durian.  I do know that I was warned about the smell when I was first introduced to the fruit, and consequently I've always held my breath till each spoonful was in my mouth (for some reason, it doesn't smell bad once it's in there).

So the "sewer" description may have come from the person who first warned me, rather than from my own perceptions.  Not that I'm planning to smell one now!

Oh you should.

I passed a market selling durian today and man, it smelled good, because I was drooling for a bit. :p
