Series 5 Rumors, Speculation, and Wish Lists

Which was also interesting, that Sherlock would see it that way.

If you take The Abominable Bride seriously as a look inside Sherlock's mind, it means he really had a lot of insight into John and Mary's relationship and precious few illusions about John as a husband. I also got the impression that Sherlock felt a little guilty for taking John away on cases so much - but not enough to stop doing it of course.

To get back to the wish list: I don't want John to get married again. He can have the occasional girlfriend (because John Watson always will have girlfriends) but I don't really want to see another big romance / disaster. Mary should be The Woman for him.

Maybe he'll habitually fall in love with the client of the week and that will turn into a little running gag like in the original stories.

Dunno if I would want him to move back to Baker St. Sherlock's flat is really no place to raise a kid and I wouldn't want John to live apart from Rosie. Also it seemed like he was pretty well off financially now so he wouldn't need a flat share. As for Sherlock, it was always more about the company than the rent for him, imo.

Concerning Rosie: What I would like to see is more of John in his role as a father. There hadn't been much time for that yet. Sure you saw him with the baby but I would like to see how he changed now being a dad and how it affects on his work with Sherlock.

I would like to see that only if he was a really great father. If he's going to mess it up, I don't want to know.

I wouldn't mind John having a screw up moment, but it would only work if Rosie were still little, non-verbal. It would be something along the lines of her crying and John not figuring it out but Sherlock realizes what type of cry it is, corrects John in his normal Sherlock way (potentially less brash) & John hits his own forehead realizing he's been an idiot. Then we go back to chasing criminals and Sherlock berating Mycroft because he can.

Why should he mess it up?

For dramatic purposes. ;) I wasn't really being serious.

Oh, respectfully disagree.  I don't want to see him more than about 45 seconds an episode with Rosie, and I want his role as a Dad to affect his work with Sherlock not at all.  That has been one of my biggest fears for the entire show, that the introduction of a child means that John stops being "John Watson" and starts being "Dad," and then I'm out.

Oh I didnt't mean watching them like that for the whole 1 1\2 hours. Of course the main part must always be the detective part. But I'm curious why the makers introduced Rosie. They must have had something in mind. But at the moment it doesn't make much sense to me.

I found it interesting that John and Marie had chosen Sherlock and Molly as godparents for Rosie. Doesn't John have siblings? I thought they mentioned a sister once. I would like to see more of the godparents and Rosie.

John does have a sister Harriet, but he's more or less estranged from her at least in part do to her drinking issue she's had.

It was also a little stab at John - he was gone so much she was practically widowed.

Oh, that's a great interpretation!  I like that, Toby!  Must rewatch TAB with that in mind and see how it plays for me.

Which was also interesting, that Sherlock would see it that way.

Sherlock ships John/Mary more than anyone else in the entire fandom.   :)

I'd like to see bits and pieces of John being a dad.  That could mix with what he and Sherlock do in some interesting ways that don't actually screw up the detective work.

I agree. As I have said before, the adventures don't actually take up much of John's time, it just seems that way because they're the only part of his life that is relevant to the show. He could and should take care of Rosie and I wouldn't object to a few little scenes with her here and there just to give his character more background. There would still be plenty of casework for three episodes every few years... And if they wait a really long time and don't continue until Holmes and Watson are older, Rosie might be a rebellious teenager by the time we see her next which opens up a whole other mine of comedic potential.

I'm not sure whether I'd like to see that... I do love his small moments though, like in TSo3 when he takes charge of helping Bainbridge after the stabbing and he calls Sherlock "Nurse", lol.

I'd like too see a case in which John is the lead. He tends to stay behind Sherlock. I'd like to see John more involved as a doctor. A case where Sherlock has to follow...maybe something with an epidemic etc. Just an idea...

Yes, I'd like to see more moments where John's medical and/or military expertise plays a key role -- he either makes a key contribution to solving a major case or solves a minor one more or less on his own.  But either way, I don't think he should take the lead for an entire episode.  As Martin Freeman has pointed out, the show is called "Sherlock," not "John."

Near as I recall, utilizing Watson's expertise is one area where Conan Doyle kinda dropped the ball.  Though since Watson is the narrator, I suppose we could chalk that up to his modesty.  ;)

That's one of the things I do really like about TBB ... John gets to do stuff, and a couple times he even gets the upper hand on Sherlock, which is delightful. More of that kind of thing would be nice.

And I enjoy his meetings with Mycroft. In fact, I'd like to see another moment between those two ... and I'll take my reasoning over to the "John" thread.

This is very good inference.

Yes, if the show does come back, I do hope Sherlock and Mycroft will continue to snipe at each other, just because it's so entertaining. :d

I think they'll continue to do so ;)

But it would interest me if Sherlock changes and how much if the show comes back. We know now that he opened a door to his emotions and IMO he isn't able to close it again. I'm curious how he deals with that now. I hope he doesn't change completly, because he wouldn't be Sherlock anymore, but they can't ignore this development also.

Well, Moftiss did say something like they'd now gotten Sherlock to the person he was in the old Basil Rathbone movies they loved so much. I can't remember much about Holmes' personality in those movies, but I can hear Basil's voice in my mind, and he doesn't sound very emotional. "Come, Watson, the game is afoot!" :d

I used to watch them all the time, but I was really young so I can't remember what that Sherlock was like ... so I don't know. He was older than ours at the beginning, and maybe that's all they meant. But I doubt if he was as bratty as ours, and I don't remember him jumping for joy because there was a murder. Which is too bad, because I like that part of our Sherlock, I hate to see him lose it. But I bet he does ... he'll be more "mature" from now on, I suspect.

I just hope they don't make John into that Watson! He was a real buffoon.
