One movie remake that always interested me was "Mogambo". It was a remake of an old Clark Gable/Jean Harlow movie called " Red Dust". The remake was done 20 years after the original and changed the location but cast Gable in the same lead role, opposite Ava Gardner and a young Grace Kelly. Of course Kelly was much too young for the Gable character and he ended up with Gardner in the end, playing the Harlow role.

It was promoted as a testament to Gable's appeal and longevity that he could carry off the same part in the 30's and the 50's. As a long time Gable fan I liked the film but it is probably not to everyone's taste. 

I watch a lot of old movies from the 30's thru the 50's and a lot of the stars passed away when I was a child or before I was even born. Gable passed when I was three and I only discovered him after reading and the seeing "Gone With the Wind". 

Sorry, I've gotten off topic but most of my exposure to old time Hollywood has been thru remakes of classics and appearances of actors on tv shows I watched growing up. That spurred a curiosity to find out more about the original films and actors.

So for me remakes, even mediocre ones, are of interest for other reasons. 

And yes the 2nd Star Trek movie with BC was the best.

She definetly had a huge impact on the world. I watched the documentary "Woman in Motion" that came out I believe last year. I had know idea she did so much work to change the culture at NASA. She was a very impressive person, and left an indelible mark on the world.

So uuuhm, does anyone know webtoon? It had Lore Olympus and heartstopper before it got famous. Anyway, I want to publish a Star Trek comic on there that takes place before First Contact with the Vulcans. But I don’t know if people are interested in it, or if it's good and people want to read it. Is anyone willing to do proofreading? Oh, before anyone asks copyright should not be a problem. I know they have a Scooby doo comic, and a dragon ball Z comic.

 

Oh btw, I hope Star Trek prodigy finds a new home. Because I really want to see season 2.

I need to mention that my primary Star Trek interest is the original series, with a secondary interest in Next Generation.  I've watched most of the early spin-offs as well, plus the reboot movies.  I'd be interested in seeing your first chapter, and would be happy to proofread that much.  After that, I don't know.

Near as I understand it, Shatner is basically saying that he thinks Nimoy conspired with producer Harve Bennett to have Spock killed off in Wrath of Khan in order to make the character more popular and also to give Nimoy the leverage he needed in order to get to direct the sequel(s).

What do y'all think about Shatner's interpretation of those events?

I think Shatner is just jealous that Spock is the most famous character of the TOS if not whole of the franchise.

That's kinda what I was thinking.  He's always been told he was THE star of the show, but then he saw how much more fan mail Nimoy got, so he's been living with that cognitive dissonance for over half a century -- and finally came up with an explanation that makes him feel better.

But speaking logically, if I may, Spock has been more popular than Kirk ever since, roughly, "The Naked Time" in September of 1966 (first season of TOS, fourth episode).  So A} why would Nimoy feel the need to make his character even more popular, and B} even if he did, why would he wait till 1982?

Wasn't there reports of infighting between the crew when it was making season 3? Maybe Shatner wasn't nice to Leonard, maybe Leonard didn't forget what happened then and was like: you know what, maybe I'll ask the director to put in a death scene so I won't have to deal with you ever again!

That could explain the death scene (though nobody except Shatner says it was Nimoy's idea) -- but Shatner is now claiming that Nimoy did that scene so that he could say he wouldn't play Spock again unless they let him direct a movie or two -- which wouldn't make sense if Nimoy wanted to avoid Shatner.

Not so much infighting as resentment against Shatner's all-about-me tactics after executives Roddenberry, Solow, and Justman left.  It was obvious to us fans that Kirk was basically becoming a one-man crew -- explaining science to Spock, explaining communications to Uhura, telling Sulu exactly what heading to take (thus bypassing Chekov entirely), explaining the engines to Scotty, etc.  Either Kirk didn't understand the concept of delegation of authority, or else Shatner just wanted more lines for himself.  Either way, it ticked off a number of the other regulars, including Nimoy.  But Shatner and Nimoy somehow managed to maintain something of a friendship.

It just occurred to me that if they'd meant the collective "Man," they would logically have said "Where Man [or Mankind] has not gone" -- whereas "where no man has gone" refers to individuals.

Also, if one of those "prove you're a human" tests said to click on every photo that shows a man, nobody (except possibly my late Aunt Bernice and/or a few activists) would click on any that clearly showed a woman.  In other words, even if "man" could also mean "woman" in some stilted, academic phrases, that's not the way most people have actually thought or talked within our lifetimes.

This reminds me of that quote from LOTR where the nazgul said "no man can kill me." And then Eowyn said "I am no man." I've seen an edited picture of that scene multiple times with the nazgul saying "I mean no one."

Speaking of Star Trek, I'm a bit sad. Picard ended, Discovery ended, Lower Decks ended. The movie of Sector 31 is going to be released on January 24, Strange new world season 3 will be released sometime in 2025 there's a letter campaign to get a season 3. I feel like the interest in new Trek material is waning, and soon we'll be without

Yup, words are important!  I love that scene too (even though it's basically the birth of the first Nazgul -- hiss, boo!).

Well, a letter campaign back in 1968 seems to have been what got us season 3 (such as it was!) of the original series.

Considering that NBC literally pronounced Trek to be "dead" in 1969, I'd say that even if the end really is near this time, it's had a good long run!

I must admit to having started losing interest years ago, because the new stuff (beginning with Deep Space 9) didn't feel like real Trek to me, because each episode no longer had a point to make.  It felt to me like the new shows were just soap operas set in the Trek universe.

You mean that literally -- each episode actually makes a point?

ADDED:  Yup, they do -- one review says "The stories also return to a more episodic storytelling format, though the characters still develop over time"  Cool!

Exactly. Strange New World made a point to somewhat return to the "one story per evening" format of old, instead of the more common "you're gonna binge watch it anyway, aren't you" multi-episode stories more common nowadays.
