I would be more than happy for the Doctor to meet Greg and Molly...

Just think, while all that hoo-ha during the hiatus is going on, the Doctor could run in, pick up Greg and whiz him off for a bit of R&R, maybe mentioning that he once travelled with a relation of his (Riddell from Dinosaurs on a Space Ship).

There are 47 reviews now.  I would have clicked on "Newest First" to read just the 10 new ones, but I wanted to ask y'all about this paragraph from one of the older ones:

Sherlock and John's reunion was perfectly executed, although I did find the introduction of Harold Trelawney Mustache a little bit awkward. They were doing a perfectly good job as a two man team before he showed up (and he does seem to dramatically affect their chemistry). Also, his bizarre claims to have worked in a Warburton's bread factory, and to be made of the universe, seemed more than a little far fetched.

Sounds like it should be funny, if only I knew what the heck she was alluding to.  I do understand who "Harold" is supposed to be, of course, but his name and the part about the bread factory sound like references to -- something?

I know in some parts of the US, anyway, that the mustache is sometimes called a "cookie duster"? Not sure if that might mean anything pertaining to a bread factory though.

Can you imagine the Doctor and Sherlock in the same room...? I think John would faint. "Oh Gods. No. Not another one. Please."

Concerning the Series 3 DVD/Blu Rays.  Prior series have all included commentary tracks for at least two of the episodes.  However I've not seen any reference to them for the Series 3 discs.  Have we heard definitively if commentaries will or will not be included?

I aks because those would be my only reason for buying the discs.

Hello, Radcap, don't think we've met -- welcome to Sherlock Forum!  :welcome:

There's been a list of rather vaguely-titled items "included" in the special features, but so far I've heard nothing one way or the other as to whether there will be commentaries.  Both the DVD and the Blu-Ray have two discs, like the prior two series, which I take as a hopeful sign.

There's one other point you may want to consider when you make your decision, depending on where you live and/or how you're watching Sherlock, .  If you're relying on the PBS broadcast of the show, you're missing 8 minutes out of each episode.  The cuts are made by Hartswood, so they're as gently done as possible, but some of the missing scenes are ones that I personally consider significant.  The DVDs (from both the UK and the US and presumably the other regions as well) have the complete 90-minute episodes.

Hi Carol.  Indeed we haven't met.  This is my first foray into the world of the Sherlock Forum.  I'm in the States and most people here haven't seen Series 3 yet, so this is the only place I've found I can talk about "The Empty Hearse" without spoiling it for everyone.  ;)

I'll let you deduce from the facts I've thus far provided which viewing source I'm likely to have used.   :sherlock:

Thank you for the kindness of your advice.  It is both welcome and appreciated.  :)

Well, if (as you state) the commentaries are your sole reason for buying the discs, how about skipping the preorder and waiting till one of us (who did preorder) can tell you more?

Since you'll have already seen the episodes by then, it's not a matter of urgency.  And as this forum has several British members, there'll probably be a definite answer here within a day or two of their shipping. If they do include the commentary, you can always order them then.

Indeed.  That was exactly my plan.  Great minds, eh? ;)

I was simply hoping someone might have more knowledge than I in regard to the contents.  If there was evidence that the commentaries will be on the discs, then I would have placed my preorder immediatly.

I've just thought of one more reason why I like the Sherlock DVDs -- subtitles!  They're really helpful for those rapid Sherlockian deductions, times when several characters are talking at once, and just in general because everyone's speaking British.  ;)

Oh, that's a GREAT point! Thanks for that! :)

I remember reading that the season 3 dvds would be released on January 20th... is that just in the UK? Because when I placed my pre-order on Amazon, it said they would be available on February 11th.

If you've ordered the Region 1 DVD from the US Amazon, you'll have to check with them -- just have a look at the details of that order on your online account.  And then please let us know, because you can't be the only one who's wondering about that.

As for the Region 2 DVDs -- silly me -- shoulda posted this here instead of on the Series 3 thread:

We got this email from Amazon UK today:

The items listed below will actually be dispatched sooner than we had originally expected based on the new release date:

"Sherlock - Complete Series 3 [DVD]"
Previous estimated arrival date: February 03 2014 - February 07 2014
New estimated arrival date: January 27 2014 - January 31 2014

And:

... the ... UK DVD  and Blu Ray ... for Sherlock S3 and ... the Complete S1-S3 ... now all out a week earlier than previously announced on January 20th!

P.S:  I suspect your February 11 date is correct (or at least close), because PBS won't be done airing Series 3 till February 2nd, and they will not release the DVDs till after that.

That's why we've been ordering ours from the UK.  That saved us a four-month wait on Series 2.  Only something like a couple of weeks this time, but it's still sooner.  (Of course, one needs a Region-2 or region-free player.)

Yeah, I keep telling myself I need to just go ahead and buy a region free player, since I enjoy so much British television!

You don't have to buy one, just download the free VLC player from online. It plays Region 1 and 2 dvds without any kind of fuss what so ever.
