'Hawking' starring Benedict Cumberbatch coming to DVD 14th Oct. Pre-order now from Amazon UK.

I have been wanting to see this for ages!  :bouncy:

It's been available from Amazon as an X-box download for a while.  It was like, $3 or something, when I got it.   Delighted to see it on DVD, though.

DVD? Yay! I love this film.

I hope the DVD includes some extras (e.g., I believe that Cumberbatch and Hawking made a documentary), but in any case I'll be glad to be able to see the movie at last.

I've only seen it on youtube/download, so I'll be glad to get the dvd at last

"Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking" is a three-part series in which Benedict Cumberbatch provides the voice of Stephen Hawking.  It's here on Netflix: http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Into_the_Universe_with_Stephen_Hawking/70211618?trkid=2361637

It's a cosmology series, not about the guy.  Great images.

Ah, thanks!  That may well be what I was thinking of.  Probably not included, then.

PBS is running this (about 60 minutes of it, anyhow) on Wednesday.  Our local station has it scheduled from 10 to 11 pm (Eastern Time), but check your local listings.

The DVD is inexplicably still not available from Amazon.com, but I plan to get it next time we order from the UK.

I do apologize if any of you tuned in expecting to see Benedict Cumberbatch tonight (though he did have a brief appearance).  The PBS ad and listing had merely said "Hawking" and I didn't realize that there was also a straight autobiographical film with the same title.

I found it very interesting, but am still looking forward to seeing the dramatization.

We finally put in an order with Amazon UK, and we both really like this movie.  There are no special features on the DVD (other than, I think, subtitles, which we often appreciate, but didn't need with this).  The movie is around an hour and a half, and covers the years when Hawking had just found out he was ill and was earning his PhD at Cambridge.  Cumberbatch's Hawking is very different from any of the "made up" characters I've seen him play -- sweet and vulnerable, but determined.

There's one scene where Hawking's buddies bet him that he can't pick up a girl in a bar by talking only about relativity.  Alex and I both thought she looked familiar, but neither of us could place her till we watched the closing credits -- Alice Eve, Dr. Carol Marcus to Cumberbatch's Kahn.  Thankfully, someone's put that Hawking scene on YouTube:

And the guy that eggs him into the bet ... isn't that the same guy that played Sebastion in TBB?

I LOVED this movie, btw.

Wikipedia says you're right, his name is Bertie Carvel - and wow, you have sharp eyes. Wouldn't have recognized him.

Wikipedia also says that Carvel has been cast as Jonathan Strange (opposite Eddie Marsan, Lestrade from those RDJ films). I wonder how that series will turn out (not an easy book to make into a film, that's for sure).

Posted

Srsly? Not how I would have pictured Strange at all! I think of him as being more ... well, Sherlock-ish. Lean. But I hope we get to see that in the States, love the book.

Yeah, Benedict Cumberbatch would've made a great Strange for sure (or Raven King, for that matter) but that production doesn't appear to be big budget, unfortunately (I love the book, too) so they apparently went for lesser-known actors.

As did Sherlock at first ... :)

Ooooh, I wonder who they've cast as the Raven King? Must go look it up .... .

Hah! Totally! One of the best moments in the movie. That totally works on guys, too!

Who else thought BC was absolutely perfect for the role? His smile actually has an uncanny resemblance to the real Hawking. And I loved how I could hear some Sherlock seep through the parts where he speaks really excitedly about his theory. A gem of a movie - I can see why they chose him to play Turing!

Oh my... bless whoever put this clip out for all to see. I need to get this film. Oh my... That is the best pickup scene I have ever witnessed. It would totally work on me, too.

Yes indeed -- it's so much sweeter than the usual "hiya babe!" pickup line.  Hawking actually expects Eve's character to have half a brain, unlike his buddies, apparently.

If you like that scene, T.o.b.y, you'll definitely like the whole movie.

Yes, this movie was a complete surprise to me, not your usual "angsty" biopic, I loved it.
