Benedict has a lovely voice.  Maybe the 'Sherlock' cast could do a song for 'Red Nose Day' or 'Children In Need', something like that!!

I love seeing the things people get up to for Children in Need. Just...throwing that out there...

Yes, it's great fun and does a lot of good. I hope the 'Sherlock' team can do something like that but a lot of the guys are so busy in their careers.

Our lead actor is on board. http://www.radiotimes.com/news/standard.aspx?slug=2013-12-12%2Fbenedict-cumberbatch-id-like-to-do-a-musical

Maybe it's time to start a Kickstarter campaign!

T.o.b.y made me remember an old Austrian film today, Müller's Büro ... a weird detective film noir / comedy crossover with lots of musical numbers thrown in for good measure. This one, Männerfreundschaft (friendship between men), might reasonably fit into a Sherlock musical as well, I think ;) (the song stops around the 3:00 mark, but I didn't find a closer cropped clip without lots of ads):

Context: Müller thinks that Max has been killed and mourns him, and when he sees he was wrong, they reaffirm their friendship and sing about remaining friends, sharing enemies and how only men can understand the bonds between men .

Benedict and Martin could do a song 'n' dance routine about friendship!

Ooooop. This is also talking about how he'd like to do a romantic comedy.

I think Benedict could put his hand to anything - he's so talented.......

Upon further investigation.. I find that Benedict is an incredible actor and he should continue in this particular field of work. <_< uhm it's like Audrey Hepburn, one my favorite actresses of all time, yet Warner Bros studios had the good since to do a voice over for her singing parts in My Fair Lady.

The same would be much appreciated in a musical featuring Mr. Cumberbatch.

Yeah, he could do it. He's a better singer than, say, oh I don't know, Rex Harrison? :P

Tone death are you? He's able to hit a few notes here or there & he knows the trick of fake singing. But he needs some voice coaching. Like months of dedicated classes.

I fear that I wouldn't want much needed singing lessons to interfere with the production of Sherlock however. So voice over it is. :)

In my mind I see Sherlock being a bit high brow in musical quality. Would require singing on a professional level in my mind. The actors for les miserables did fabulous. But all of them even Russell Crowe have been singing for years. ( Russ actually has his own band ).

You have to use your diaphragm and head voice. That's singing 101. BC sings from his chess. Big no no, which is why he ends up sounding so flat.

Yes, that's why he's an actor and not a singer. And I said that I thought he had a good singing voice but that doesn't mean that I think he's a good singer.

The BBC seems to think he has potential though. He sings quite a bit in his radio work and in movies. So maybe voice training wouldn't be a  bad thing.

He does have potential actually. I agree. Based off his regular speaking voice, I wouldn't doubt that he could actually have a broad range. He's got to channel Bass and Baritone. I LOve a nice Bass singer.

I agree with Arcadia, partly because musicals typically seem to leave the heavy-duty singing to the female lead.  The male lead is apparently expected to do more acting than singing, so they write his part with a lot of patter songs and/or a very limited range of notes.

Jess, have you seen the DVD of "My Fair Lady"?  One of the special features on ours is the undubbed version of Audry Hepburn actually singing "Wouldn't it be Loverly," and I think I actually like her version better than Marni Nixon's, precisely because it's not quite so polished.  The reason given for dubbing her was that her own voice wasn't quite up to the more sophisticated songs later in the movie, and I suppose they're right about that.

Uh. Yeah. Thank goodness they did voice over. I'm sorry. You can't be singing flat like that. Truly made me shudder & make my I'm absolutely terrified face. She did try her best. Now I don't think they should've been stuffing her hips to give her an hourglass shape.

Oh Carol, I wish I had your edition... I didn't know that version was on any official DVDs. I'll have to keep an eye out on Amazon.

I much prefer actors singing the songs in musicals themselves. I don't mind amateurish singing, I quite enjoy it, in fact. I prefer genuine-sounding over polished.

Them I say there are plenty of actors who can really sing. Why not use them? Or they have to have voice lessons. I just can't stand dropped notes.
