Earendil, where did you find the news that Martin Freeman will be returning to New Zealand?

In the Nesbitt article, I find only this: "Nesbitt confirmed that he is returning to New Zealand in May for the filming of the third 'Hobbit' movie."  The article is indeed dated just yesterday, and portions of it are obviously recently written -- but the last several paragraphs (following the financial part) could have been recycled from an older article, and the cast did return to NZ in late May of last year.  So independent confirmation would be good.

Sounds like the actual title will be There and Back Again ... and Again ... and Again ...

Ha. Ha.  Mind you, he's getting paid enough.

Well, I deduced. :P If Nesbitt has to go back, than Martin as the main character has to go back too.  ;)

From theonering.net:

Although officially all shooting for Peter Jackson’s Hobbit movies wrapped at the end of pickups last year, the cast have always said that they expect to head back sometime this year. In his interview with TheOneRing.net last November, Richard Armitage said, ‘We have nothing official at the moment; but knowing Pete, knowing what that third movie needs to be like, you know, his taste and what he’s aiming for, I have no doubt in my mind that we’ll be going back to do more stuff … On the last day of the shoot, he [PJ] put his arms around me, and he gave me a big hug and said, ‘See you next year.’ And I was like, ‘What, do you mean for the Premiere?’ and he went, ‘No, no; we’ll be back here again…’ ’

Now there is the first hint of a confirmation that there will indeed be further pickups to complete the third movie, The Hobbit: There and Back Again. The business section of newspaper Irish Examiner contains this article about actor James Nesbitt’s entertainment firm Brown Cow Films Ltd; at the very end of the article is the line, ‘Nesbitt confirmed that he is returning to New Zealand in around May for the filming of the third Hobbit movie.’

There and Back Again indeed! It looks like New Zealand may be becoming Middle-earth, and the fellowship of companions may be gathering, for one last journey in a few months’ time. And that is an encouraging thought.

OK, so Freeman's involvement is at this point a conjecture on everyone's part -- guess it depends on precisely what scenes they want to tweak.  It just seems a bit odd, considering that Amanda Abbington is reported to have said just a few days ago that he would be available (as in, for Sherlock) come April (presumably when he's done filming Fargo).

I sure hope so.  But still ....

Bet he'll be relieved when the third movie actually premieres.  ('Course then he'll get a phone call from Peter Jackson, like "Guess what Martin, we've decided to do a fourth Hobbit movie -- and guess what's in your fine print!")

I actually got 80% in all of them off the top of my head except for the one on the Hobbit - probably because I haven't read the book in 15 years or more and have only seen the film once, even though I have the dvd.

That level of dedication and perfectionism is almost scary :).

Also, this tumblr post has a video of the process and a couple of pics taken from it, too.

Forget the novelty of Martin Freeman talking with a Minnesota accent in Fargo -- how about Martin Freeman speaking Chinese in a video promoting The Hobbit?  Sorry, it's a flash video, so I haven't been able to embed it, but here's a link. (and they say if that doesn't work for you, try here).

I just failed hard at embedding a flash video here, so you'll have to follow the link to the article to see it, sorry! It's an amazing behind-the-scenes from Weta Digital about Smaug.

For forum members in the U.S., Amazon now has the two-disc special edition DVD set of The Desolation of Smaug ready for preordering at $20 (I'll wait until the price comes down) and it will be released on 8 April:

Added: the price has come down a little to $19, but I will wait until it comes down more.

Added: the price came down to $17, so I bought it (now it's back to $19).
