The link in that quote doesn't seem to work.  But apparently the Heron Tower is now known as the Salesforce Tower, and this brochure shows the floor plan (in addition to lots of pretty pictures, both inside and out).

WOW.

That's how I understood it, yes.

Yes, so it is not a real book but a mockup looking like a real diary?

Well, it's a real book, just not the book it purports to be (even though Anderson surely did his best to make it look authentic).

Nit picker! :D

Maybe "Billy" is simply Moftiss's favorite name -- their equivalent of Conan Doyle's "James"?  They also have Billy Wiggins.

Does anyone know who named the skull?

Posted

A year ago, this person suggested that it's the actual skull of Billy Kincaid, the Camden Garrotter.  In any case, that's one more Billy.  Anyone know whether Kincaid is from canon?

And come to think of it, Sherlock's own first name is William.

As much as I would love to see Sherlock's (or Ben's) skull scan... this makes not much sense. :P

My last post was merely another Moftiss "Billy" -- not an attempt to identify the skull!  :P

Somehow I got the impression that "Billy" was something the props department came up with.

Now that I think about it, there's potentially a whole story behind Sherlock's introduction to the skull, isn't there? "Friend of mine. Well, I say 'friend'".

Posted

Just because the props department came up with it doesn't mean it can't have a history.  That's the advantage of fiction -- you can make up the history at your convenience.  I assume that's something else the Moftisses may fill us in on sometime -- when it's helpful to a story line.  Meanwhile, I doubt that even they know the skull's back story.  Lots of fan-fiction potential, though!

Of course, but what I meant was: I thought the name "Billy" was bestowed by the props department. Why I think that, I don't know.

Wait. Maybe that's what you thought I meant too. Whatever!

I don't think I did, but at this point, I really have no idea!

Not exactly a question about Sherlock, but about Cabin Pressure.

I just came upon this on Twitter.

What's the thing with the lemon? I also have seen a lemon (with some writing on it) as an avatar of someone on BC board at IMDB, so it has to be of some significance. Someone willing to explain in two sentences? :)

i'm still boggled that fan theories about names (and such) can 'become' quasi-canonical 'fact' (e.g Holmes' apparent full name, the H in John H Watson.... we have Baring-Gould and Sayers to thank for those don't we?)..... it's a fascinating process... bonkers and fun :)

Another new logo, softmachine?  What's that from, "The Musgrave Ritual"?

Definitely Sayers, and I think it was Baring-Gould, yes.  They say that nature abhors a vacuum, and I guess that applies just as well to intellectual vacuums as to the physical kind.  If the original author leaves any gaps, fan fiction will inevitably fill them in!

From the Cabin Pressure episode "Qikiqtarjuaq":

CAROLYN: [...] I have decided that on this flight, I require some mildly but not life-threatening unprofessional amusement with which to while away the time.

MARTIN: Carolyn, no!

DOUGLAS: What a good idea!

MARTIN: Carolyn, I specifically gave Nancy my word that –

DOUGLAS: There’s always the Travelling Lemon, for instance?

CAROLYN: Oh, of course – the very thing!

MARTIN: What, what’s that?

DOUGLAS: Not come across the Travelling Lemon, Martin, in all your professional experience? Well, player one strolls through a full passenger cabin, chatting to the adoring public of this or that topic of interest, and as he goes, he casually secretes somewhere where it can still be clearly seen, a lemon or other citrus fruit, as mutually agreed by the players and referees before match play commences, but I’m a traditionalist and favour a lemon.

CAROLYN: And then, player two goes out, finds it, retrieves it, hides it again. Now what’s our record, Douglas?

DOUGLAS: I believe on that night flight to Miami, we achieved a rally of sixteen.

Apparently the game reoccurs in a few other episodes as well.  (Sorry that's more than two sentences. :P )

it is indeed, Carol. I decided against Susan Who from the Dr Who TV Comic strip - some people might think it was an accurate portrait of myself!

I love that Paget drawing of Holmes literally shedding light on a mystery..... poor old Brunton..!

As I recall, the "scarlet" was simply a reference to blood; i.e., a study in murder.

Posted

Right.  It's analogous to the names of some paintings.  If "A Study in Scarlet" was a painting, then all the important items in it would be that color.  Only (as Arcadia said) in the case of Conan Doyle's story, it refers specifically to blood.

It has no reference to a room called a "study."  It's more like "study your algebra."  Or even better, like the word "etude" (which I believe is simply French for "study"), so instead of "Etude in C Minor" you get "Study in Scarlet."

It's because someone on Twitter mentioned to Arwel that ["Abominable Bride" spoiler]

he liked the Study in Scarlet better than Sherlock's kitchen. And hell, the room [in TAB] has scarlet wallpaper!

Arwel Jones, the Lord of Wallpapers, Secret Mastermind of the Show.
