Sir Ian McKellen as "Mr. Holmes"

Thanks, Convict13 -- there's been a tidbit here and a hint there, but this is the first actual news I've seen of this movie.

 

Ooh, Laura Linney as his housekeeper -- no Mrs. Hudson there!  And McKellen (75) as Holmes (93) looks "well preserved."

I don't usually have much interest in film versions of Mr Holmes (I came to Sherlock originally under protest - hard to imagine now, but so it was), but I might even give this a look. Ian McKellen is one of my favorite actors.

Well, if it were anyone else in the lead role I'd be dubious (Well, except maybe for Alan Rickman, but that's just because he's awesome!) But Ian McKellen is just so good that it's hard to imagine him not impressing!

I am a bit sceptical about it but it's McKellen so it might not be that bad. But I wonder about Watson. Has there been any mention of him?

Not that I'd know of. If Sherlock is 93 in this, Watson might have passed away already.

Oh, you're right. He would have to be about 100 so it's possible he will be dead. But there might be his descendants...

Is the age difference between Watson & Sherlock that massive. I mean there's been like 2 cases here in the good ole US of A, where the persons lived to be 104 years old. Looks like Betty White will be joining that # soon.

 

So what I m saying is there is a possibility he will be alive in the series.

Looks very interesting and Sir Ian McKellan is a brilliant actor - it all depends how good the script is.

Yeah I agree. The whole thing could be amazingly wonderful, or wonderfully bad. Depends on the write -iiiiing ( I'm singing writing in a high pitch tone). Also lighting, effects, editing & cinematography.

Ok. In my mind I thought this was going to be a television series. But actually it will be a movie for the year 2015. Ok. Well that's fine too.

Of course, there was only a year between Holmes and Watson (Holmes 1854) and (Watson 1853). As far as I can make out, Watson was meant to have died in 1939 at the age of 86, leaving Holmes alone to reminisce their life together. Mrs Hudson might've gone about then, if not before.

 

It does seem interesting, but I'm sure it's going to be heartbreaking.

 I just read that Nicholas Rowe will have a cameo in Mr Holmes.

Oh!  So "Young Sherlock Holmes" returns as "Middle-Aged Sherlock Holmes" in a movie watched by "Elderly Sherlock Holmes" in a movie that we'll get to see next year -- cool!

I'm not anticipating a Sherlock Holmes mystery that's fun and exciting. I expect to be rather melancholy.

During his Ice Bucket Challenge, Sir McKellen stated that they'd just finished filming, and he seemed happy enough. So good things to come, one hopes .

I suspect you're right that the movie is a bit melancholy -- but a melancholy movie can also be a very good and even satisfying movie if it's done right.  One hopes that an actor of Sir Ian's stature wouldn't be in a movie unless he thought it would be properly done.

 

Regarding the video, interesting that he nominates (among others) Laura Linney, who plays his housekeeper in the movie.  Wonder if Una Stubbs is safe?!  And it seems that everyone mispronounces George Takei's name (it's actually "tah-KAY").
